Title: NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!! I need help renaming bak files!!!
Post by: WS-Thunder on December 31, 2001, 08:34:00 pm
I just finished my mission Lost for my campaigne and I took the bak and the freespace mission file and renamed them both to Wraith Trilogy Phantom Specter 5.fs2 and Wraith Trilogy Phantom Specter 5.bak I then gleafully started Freespace to test my mission. This was the completion of 6 of my 13 levels. Then I discovered a problem! I can't rename the bak file!!! Then I tryed to fix it by renaming it back to it's original name and that didn't work!!! Heeeeeeeelp!!!

By the way I fixed the mission by renaming it again back to the original name. However, how do I rename bak files so that I can make them into a new campaigne?

What exactly happens when you try to rename it? If the problem is that you can't see the extension, Windows Explorer has a setting which lets you see the file extension for all files; I believe it's somewhere in folder options. (any window->tools->folder options) You should be able to load the bak in FRED2 though. (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/wink.gif)

Or start using File Manager like I do. (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/biggrin.gif)

Nope, the problem is that I open up fred, open a mission, rename it, then I get out of fred2, find the bak file and rename it to match the mission file so that they can see each other and they don't see each other and the bak file shows up as corrupt.

Here's a crazy idea...

Just delete the bak file. You'll get a new one the next time you edit the fs2 file anyway.

Ummm... that's kind of scary, because if I delete the bak file, then when I load the mission to edit it next time, the scripting is gone bud.

uh...wait, what do you mean when you say that you want the missions to "see each other?" If the fs2 file is corrputed, delete it and rename the bak to the fs2 and if the bak is corrupted, you shouldn't have to do renaming in the first place. (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/biggrin.gif) If both are messed up, well...you may be a bit out of luck; try to remember what you did between the last time it worked and when it stopped working and see if you can change it back in notepad. (I once has to do this to "resurrect" one of my missions that contained a really long event)
