Title: Just as every cop's a criminal, and all the sinners saints...
Post by: Stryke 9 on June 29, 2003, 03:36:43 pm
Compact cars in 3200. I promise, this is the last time I'm gonna
post some new iteration of the ****er, but the plan is to
(*gulp*) try to sell it tomorrow, so I was doing some final
tweaking. Incidentially, I never realized how ****ing huge it was
until I did the inside- it was originally designed to narrowly fit six
and weigh in at some 14 tons. See that little red bit in the cockpit pod? That's a chair. Yeah...

The title... eh, anyone who reads Gibson will get it. If not, you're
**** out of luck, and not missing much, it's not witty or anything.

If anyone for some reason wants that thing, I'll give a free copy to anyone willing to texture the beast- MAX only works on the insanely slow computer, and I'm adding Lightwave to the list of "programs I hate".

What do you use to render, by the way?

Shrike: Nasty, ****ty, cranky old Ray Dream. I swear, this thing does the job ten times better than MAX, so long as you don't need, you know, particles and ****.

Anal: Uh... sure. This one was mostly to point out the scale and stuff- since it's basically armor all over, there's no reference point but that vulnerable little cockpit. And a few access ladders and a hatch, neither of which you can even see normally. I keep forgetting that however much I've shown this thing, nobody's seen it so often as I have (practically every three friggin' days for the past friggin' year and a half- call it a flagship product. Or an unfinished one that won't leave me alone).

There's not really a good render of the whole thing that isn't a movie, but... Here's a slightly older "features" set I did probably back before it even had the pods and stuff, it shows both sides... Also explains the whole wierd-looking forward deck and such a little- in a pinch, the ship can boost up to 1/4 lightspeed and ram things...;)

I think it needs A) more greebles, if nothing more than armor plates (my favorite, I try to avoid external piping and whatnot) and B) better lighting.  The detail's more important though.

Umm... what? Add a second layer or something?:p

EDIT: Hmm... actually, not a bad idea... for another model, but three-layered plating could be kinda cool...

Just out of curiosity, who were you going to try to sell it to?

Whoever was willing to pay for it. There seem to be a good number of crappy models on, say, Renderosity, I figured if I was selling at least marginally better ones at a fraction the cost I might attract whatever the hell kinda market there must be to make people pay $20 a year for hosting.

Some C&C.  They're too boxy - I suggest a subtle effect to give the impression of detail.  Try to keep things small unless you're going to detail the details.  Thus, keep the armor covering boxes thin; I suggest 0.2 scale meters or less above the mail hull.  Also, try to avoid totally sharp edges - if there's a reason, use them, I certainly do, but again, try to give some sort of detail or perhaps a suggestion as to why they're so sharp.

Also, find new textures.  Look into trying some procedural ones or else make your own.

Finally, just add widgets.  Airlocks and sensors and attitude jets.  I notice you have stanchions along certain parts, I've put those on my recent ships as well.

What program do you use to model?  Lightwave?

Well, I'll look into it... most of the significant parts (jets and airlocks) it has a full supply of already (you can see an RCS jet towards the back there, it's the spiky wartish thing), but I'm sure there's something...

Ah, you mentioned lightwave, so I thought you were only rendering in Raydream.

There's lots of stuff you can add to a model.  I find large areas are good candidates for armor-style panelling.

Like the stuff on this model.
