Title: HTML editing
Post by: TopAce on July 08, 2003, 04:21:21 pm
Can somebody suggest me a tutorial where I can learn HTML editing from? What are the most recommended programs for creating homepages etc.

I am currently using(but at least I am trying to use) Word.

Use notepad or similar - its just easier than Word, doesnt have page devisions etc.  If you have word, you might have MS office - try MS frontpage, i use it, its easy enough to use, like MS word, really.
Have a look on Angelfire's site, they have some basic tips for HTML.  I dont know any advanced tutorials, sorry.

Dont have any links for ya, but....
Start off with notepad.. learn the basics with that.. you'll remember it better...
If you want to use a program to make the page though, go with Dreamweaver at least... stay away from Front Page or Word... avoid them like the plague....

But I could get used to Word, it can convert to HTML, I can format letters better and there are more possibilities than in Wordpad.

I made this (www.swooh.com/peon/diamondgeezer/frames) using Frontpage. How long do you think it would have taken me to assemble it using Notepad and trying to teach meself HTML off of the web?

If you're starting from scratch, Frontpage is a good My First HTML Editor.

You can download a demo of Dreamweaver at www.macromedia.com I think... its better than FP... I think there may be HTML reference stuff on the site too...

I used Notepad and HTML 4.0 for Dummies.:p
I think it's like ~$20.

Personally I use AceHTML Freeware (http://www.visicommedia.com/) instead of notepad. You still need to learn the HTML commands yourself (which I am slowly doing) but it makes it far easier to insert pictures and tables etc. and it means that you can swap to your page via the internal browser at anytime without having to save the file first (unlike notepad where you have to do the whole save-refresh cycle every time you want to see what effect your changes have).

www.htmlgoodies.com

i've used it all my life for things i can't figure out.

find a webpage you like, view source, and learn from it

www.w3.org

read xhtml/html specifications ;)

actually that's a good way to learn proper, modern html, but it may be somewhat difficult. I suggest www.htmlcodetutorial.com, however note that some stuff there is deprecated.

Oh and it's a good idea to learn and use CSS

For beginnier-to-advanced HTML tutorials: www.webmonkey.com

I code all my sites by hand - none of that DreamWeaveer/GoLive/FrontPage WYSIWYG crap. Macromedia's Homesite has been with me all the way, since version 2.0 at least, and I still prefer it over anything else. It comes along with DreamWeaver.

For a slightly more advanced look at things, www.devshed.com is good.

I have a special thing: If I upload my HTM up to the net, it can read it very stupidly: stupid ASCII characters appear. Otherwise, if I open it from HD with double-clicking on it, the normal web page appears with the look I want it to have.

Bear in mind, this opinion is coming from someone who embeds background MP3s in his web pages.

Go Notepad!

Yah, but let us consider the following:

1. It's my first ever website
2. I don't know any HTML tricks or fancy stuff (or basic stuff)
3. You're biased against me because I publicly label you a wanker
4. You're a wanker

Why doesn't the god of ****ing HTML show us all a better way of doing it instead of taking half-arsed snipes? Either way, my FS website and TC is looking a damn site prettier than yours.

By the gods, vB needs a virtual punch in the gob for the likes of you, you're a right smart alec git you are. For ****s sake, it's no wonder nobody likes you. You come up with the Beam FAQ then spend the next few years poncing around the place like some ****ing guru of omnipitence. You are without a doubt the most irritating forumite known to man, now that Razor's left, and I ****ing hope that you open your eyes the way he did. If I ever, ever meet you in the street I'm going to punch your ****ing lights out.

just a few things to check... first, try saving it as a .HTML file.  second, do you have the following tags, in the following order: (replace "[" and "]" with the real, pointy tag (above the "," and ".")

[TITLE]
[/TITLE]
[BODY]
[/BODY]

now check you only have the information part betwen the body tags.  where are you uploading it to on the net?  what server?

i swear, of every post you've ever made, has ONE been complimentary?  you're worse than an0n (no offense an0n)...

wasn't it only about a month ago that Diamondgeezer made his first webpage?  yeah, and for a first webpage it's a hell of a lot better than my first.  how about yours?  got any websites we can take a look at that you made?

learn to be cool, so people don't make fun of you, they respect you.  you don't get respect by going around flaming people constantly.  attention, yes, but not respect

HTML tried, this way only the net couldn't read it. If I am offline and open it double clicking on the HTML, it works, but on a server it doesn't. My server is www.nexus.hu a hungarian server, but I have this problem only at one file, the other two are working fine on the same server. I am also having difficulties with the pictures, they appear as red X, but I know it is because the pics are on my winchester, not on a server, I will look after this problem once my homepage starts to work.

Then now is the perfect time for you to learn that unrequested music on webpages is very high on the list of web design things that piss people off. It's about as annoying for most people as... well... as I am to you.

Post by: diamondgeezer on July 10, 2003, 05:02:48 pm
I appreciate that entirely. It's one of my pet hates. I was quite relieved the day that I discovered it could be shut off by simply hitting the Stop button. Try it.

Besides, this particulr piece of of music is important. I'm assuming you don't get the reference, or you'd be more tolerant.

It's here: Now, it has the problem that I upload my file onto the server, but blank white screen appears instead of the page itself.

Worked fine for me

Features
 ·           26 new missions on which, you can travel through the most important systems of the GTVA, including Vasuda Prime, Vega, and the place of many mysteries, Altair IV.

·           Meet the aging Valkyrie interceptor, and blow them up.

·           Fly the Pegasus-class stealth fighter in deep space, and avoid enemy detection if you want to survive.

·           Fly Vasudan fighters, with their own Vasudan weaponry and properties

·           Fight belived dead enemies of the GTVA

Just to prove I could see the page! :) I suspect you've got a bad version of the file in your cache and that's what you're actually seeing when you try to connect. Try flushing the cache and refreshing.

EDIT : Looking at the HTML I now see why everyone hates Word so much. For such a simple page that code is ridiculously bloated.

hey man, i see the page, not just a blank screen :)

The page with the back background and orange writing on it? :)

Could you see the entire page?
Because it is zilch(a great nothing) at me, but it is strange, that if I am offline, I can read and edit that page as it is.

As for the features, they are to be improved, not so interesting yet. :)
