Title: I intend to build a Fenris out of wood,
Post by: Petrarch of the VBB on July 08, 2003, 05:30:08 pm
Being the attention whore that I am, I shall also post here, as well as my thread in FS modding.

I am going to build a model of the Fenris!

You know, if you made an Athena, and then an Erinyes or Mara, you could put engines and strings on them and 'dogfight' like my dad says he used to do back in the day :nervous:

[color=66ff00]Why specifically wood? Balsa is quite porous and has a fairly noticable grain, it tears to bits if you attempt to work it against the grain. If I were going to attempt this I'd use either card, corrugated cardboard or styrene sheets. These materials are both easier to work with and they finish well. If I were going to build this I'd use thin, stiff cardboard.

The model itself is quite straightforward if you intend to build it 100% accurate to the game, it is afterall composed of planar faces and there's not too much detail there.

I'd highly advise prototyping in any case, build it from light card, no detailing first. This will give you an idea of how the structure is composed and how big you should build it. Unless you've successfully done something like this before you shouldn't expect the first one to be perfect.

Sounds like a fun idea anyhow.

I will build a prototype, and I'll consider the styrene sheet idea, although ideally I want the model to be solid....

plastic card ( board? ). would be my first choice for that kind of project.

[color=66ff00]I thought they were refferred to by their names no matter what language.

What's styrene in french? Is it simply refferred to as plastic? (and how then do you differentiate between it and ABS?).

Anyhow, details aside, sheet plastic would be my choice after I'd prototyped the thing in card or cardboard.

ABS is the plastic used in Legos. :)

how do you plan on storing the final model and how big is this thing gonna be?

I think it'll be about a foot long, and I'll probably build a stand for it.

I was thinking bigger, but if its only gonna be a foot, I suggest you find a solid block of wood to build off of.

Well I'll see how it goes.

[color=66ff00]Styrene has a matt finish and is generally more flexable and easy to work than ABS, ABS is tougher (hence lego is made from it) it's also got a sheen to it. Better suits of stormtrooper armor will be made out of ABS though it is more expensive IIRC.

Given the choice though I'd use styrene for the model due to it's ease of cutting.

IF you wanna prototype even cheaper than styrene, consider foam core board. Use that to get the sizes you'll need for the pieces of styrene.

Good idea, now can someone answer my request and carve the pof into the pieces I asked? Please?;)
