does that make us... retrogamers???:shaking: :shaking: :shaking: :shaking: :shaking:
-
Freespace 2 is 5 years old.. Freespace 1 is what? 7? Ph34r. ;)
-
Well if you consider that Descent: FreeSpace came out in June 1998 then yes...its quite old and probably deserving of the retro game status.
-
It's still one of the greatest games ever...
-
It really is. If only it had a bigger following.

damn i'm getting old... i was going to quote KT and then say "no, you're wrong, Freespace 1 is 5 years old, FS2 is 3", but then i realized: no, he's right. time's passing too quick :(
-
So old it is. But it is still around. That has to mean two things. Either it has a lot of good things going for it, or that there is quite possibly, NOTHING LIKE IT.
Both are true, by the way!
So, it will be around for MUCH longer. I am sure of that.
BTW, NAME A GAME WHICH HAS SO MUCH PEOPLE POSTING IN IT, 5 years after it was released...
I REALLY think you won't find any!
-
The question is, will we still be here in another 5 years?
I know I will be, as I'll still be building my Fenris.:D
-
Another interesting idea (TM) that crossed my mind as I was reading this tread, was, well, the simple, unescapable, unavoidable fact that ALL of us are getting older. Not like OLD, old, but older still.
Fs2 is a collection of 1and0s. It DOESN'T get older or newer. It exists or not (in your hard-drive, at least :) )
It is us who are getting older. That is NOT a bad thing. THAT is life.
Maybe we should all scratch "old" as a bad word. Makes sense really... Hey I got me a new sig...
-
I'll be here... at least untill I get a real job. :)
-
Well indeed.
I'm not likely to leave until TAP and TVWP are finished...
I could be here until I'm on my deathbed, in that case.
-
Ohh the age is getting to me ;)

prolly not, that'd be around DNF's Release.. :p
-
i am here until end of world
-
And that will be in 300 years... If my vision the other night was correct... And Im serious too, I did have one. ;)
-
Considering to its age, it is still having good graphics relatively to today's demands. Of course we cannot expect it can beat Doom 3 in the field of visuals, but our old 'veteran' game is still a place in our heart.
Otherwise this fact made me reconsider doing my own campaign:
'Will I be ready before FS2 sinks?' Appears yes, this forum is quite stable and our modders are still active.
-
I'm getting to old for this....
*gets a heart-attack....he has to have another bypass*
too...old...arhgggggggggggg...
YEAH RIGHT!:D
-
Well, I'm only 14 and I have no life, so I'll be here until I actually get one (or learn what to do with my current one):D
Besides, I gotta make sure the TVWP makes it through.

u know u could RENT a life.....
i do it all the time
tho freespace is old its still is one of the best (old) games around........
i still think the graphics are stunning.....
and with all the modders and the source code project on who knows were Fs2 could go....
-
Another thing that needs to be said is...
When I joined up with HLP we were something like 900+ Now there are 1200 people. Granted that a lot don't post as much...
They download Fs2, play some, then off to FPS land. But those who stay remain committed. There ARE new guys coming in making contributions.
We are getting to be a hunter-gatherer society, we all work on something, we all appreciate the results of someone else's work.
ANd now my new sig...
-
Well, I was 25 When FS2 came out, so I am beginning to wish I was just a collection of 1s and 0s!
Flipside :)

I'm planning to make a DNF joke in the second mission of my campaign...
"Beta 1: Hey, did you hear?
Alpha 3: Yeah, Duke Nukem Forever was released today!
Beta 1: How long was it in dev, 300 years?
Alpha 3: Yeah, sounds about right."
Anyway, five years old? Gawd, that's positively senile for a computer game. And it still looks amazing, too, after all these years. It seemed just yesterday that Quake was 5, but FS2...
Man.
-
Woolie, get in contact with Goober, and start making DEM2, that would be perfect.
-
The oldest game I sometimes play with even nowadays, too is Dark Forces. I don't know why, perhaps shooting down stromtroopers is more enjoyable than in Jedi 1 or 2.
-
I still play Doom occasionally....
But then, don't we all?
BTW, I just found a copy of PCFormat from November 1995, and it makes for some amusing reading.
-
Any of you ever heard of.....Septerra Core? :nervous:
Or how about :gulp: :nervous: X-Com? :nervous:

meeehehehehehe, you shouldn't have said that ;)
i'll name three games that i've played today that are 5 years old, perhaps a little older, which still have a community that's thriving.
Age of Empires (still one of the top 20 most played multiplayer games)
Starcraft (still one of the top 10 most played multiplayer games)
Everquest (how old is this game exactly? anyway, it's in the top 3 most played multiplayer games)
-
...and freespace 2 is.... top... 20,000? 10,000?
-
err.. that wouldn't be saying much. :wtf:
-
itd be deep sixed if it wasnt fur us.......
u shud be happeh
-
Meh... I still play Pong[/i] at times :D

Oh yes I can...
Doom (1993)
Wolfenstein 3-D (1992)
Quake I (1996)
Quake II (1997)
Half-Life (1997)
Need for Speed III (1997)
The original Gran Turismo (1997-98, depending on what country you're in)
Heretic (1995)
Hexen (1996)
Blood (1996)
Duke Nukem 3D (1996)
Descent I, II, and III (1995, 1996, and 1998)
Need I go on?
-
Even if nobody plays it in 5 years, Freespace has influenced us all, and parts of it will live on in spirit through any modeling/artwork/whatever we do.
-
FS2 will be here and relevant until somethig else can come along and take over the legacy. So far nothing I have seen has done that (few have come close but not well enough in my opinion). As such I still enjoy other games (like NWN's for D&D, Armad2 and BOTF for RTS, hellI even boot up Q3 demo for a little FPS action once in a while, I just re0downloaded Klingon Academy demo for Starship combat - cause I gave the full version to my friend 2 years ago (slaps head!), BUT for star fighter combat FS2 is the way to go. It has set teh new standard that others have to improve upon or hope to eclipse. Until they do I will be here enjoying original campaigns, goofing aorund in general, and working on my genre abominations.
-
*COUGH* ahem... TFC anyone? :)
came out soon after HL was released (1998), I started a day after the 1009 patch came out, and to this day, five years later, I still enjoy TFC with a passion.
the new ports and versions of Quake 1 are phenomenal as well!
[EDIT] Oh yes, and dear X-Com 1, what a gem... I play that regularly on my dad's comp when I'm over there, it's about the only thing that'll run well on it
it's really good for the imagination if you visualize it like a movie and make little voices for your soldiers in your head :D
that and working on a small (4) group of elite soldiers is fun too
also, buy a BUNCH of new recruits (10 or so) and rename them all to Redshirt. spam the enemy indiscriminately with them while your elites mop up, it's hysterical and I enjoy every run with them

Well,
What COULD presumably make FS2 run for cover...
www.starshatter.com
other alternatives...
http://www.starwraith.com/
http://unknownenemy.solsector.net/
http://standoff.solsector.net/
and one of my fave's a graphic upgrade of an old game...
http://www.xwaupgrade.com/
But basically,
For all the games Woolie Wool has covered there ARE newer, better versions. For us all SpaceSimmers it seems like time has stopped at 1999. Everyone who plays them is a diehard, like us but one who basically DOESN'T WANT TO GO OUT AND BUY THE NEW VERSION OF THE SAME OLD GAME. We don't have that option.
I personally LOVE FS2, and I don't think that anything else can compare. If starshatter is to overpass it, it will be only by being better at what FS2 is.
My personal view is that for FS2 to be overtaken by everything else, a better FRED should be made for them. That in my mind is highly difficult, (bordering impossible)
SCP is our best hope for the future. Everyone who can help them, please do. I helped playtest an .exe and it was REALLY worth my while.

no, no. If Icefire is right ( FS1 out in 1998 ), well, KT is indeed wrong, we're in 2003, not 2005 :p

What is truly sad about it is that other then the cutscenes (which are still better then a lot of them in new games) FS1/2 still look better then most new games on the market :p
Now why didn't Red Faction and Summoner hold to that sort of standard? :p

It is strange that FS2 textures, icons, and images are all 256 color! Imagine what would be with 16 or 32 color depth.
-
My friend just picked up a copy of FS1. He said the graphics were excellent (Much better than UT and on par plus some of UT2K3). He freaked when I told him it was 7 years old. Then of course he went on a rampage of why Volition should do more games of this quality and that Interplay were of bunch of mother****ers.:p
-
and what's more, FS is 640*480, but when I showed a mate he was convinced that it was at least 1024*768
-
in that case you should show him freespace2.

'Twas FS2, and I was running it in low-res due to graphics card ****tyness.

Funny thread here.
Anyway, in my opinion FS2's biggest advantage is its modfriendlieness (or what it'd be called), especially if you take in the SCP; I also quite like the background story. :)
