Quick boys (and girls) I need some kind of public / cheap transportation that:
Is dirt cheap
Goes from one city to another
Can get to some kind of airport
Yes, I know this sounds odd, but right now, I'm having trouble finding a way to get my girlfriend to an airport to come and visit me next month. Her family only has one car, so she can't drive it, and even if she could, it's not very reliable right now, and isn't comfortable taking it out of her city. She's real low on cash, and can't fix it or anything like that, so.. Help. Please? I'll give you cookies.

You want a Lambretta (http://www.lambretta.it/) my friend

Oo;; ..Erm..maybe I didn't make myself clear, but..I'm thinking transportation as in..you know..like taking a taxi or something..
-
Maybe there's some sort of airbus?

I don't know. ><; The airport in question is Birmingham International Airport, in Birmingham Alabama. I don't know how much it would cost even if they had a shuttling service like that.
-
Trains rock. There's no driving at all, you can just sit back and relax, read a book or whatever. It's also much more spacious than an airplane. Tell her to look at Amtrak or whatever tickets.
-
Everyone, chant with me.
monorail! Monorail! MONORAIL! MONORAIL! MONORAIL!
-
trains cost almost as much as airplanes and are much slower. nothing is cheaper than greyhound if you have the time
-
Why can't everyone just get a nice Sinclair C5?
I know I want one...
-
hitchhiking is cheap
not so reliable
and you'll probably get to an airport.
anyway, try public transportation, or see if the airport as some kind of service. or try and gfet a ride from a friend.
-
well, in my city all you hav to do is walk to the neares metrolink station, wich in my case is a semimanagable 2 miles, no clue as to what sort of system like things you're city has
-
You can always try Zen navigation - just pick a car that looks like it knows where it's going, and follow it. You may not neccessarily end up where you wanted to be, but you quite often end up somewhere useful and/or interesting
-
Or even Xen navigation, involving long jump modules and strange organic jump pad wossnames.
-
If you're really short on cash, get a cab and then run away when its pay time. If you run into a crowded area, he probably won't bother chasing after you. I'm not kidding, if you can live with your conscience, you are likely to get away with it.
What we have here is a train system that goes from one end of town to the other (well not one town, like a region). They almost never check tickets, so I've gotten away with not paying quite a few times. If you have something similar, consider taking your chances.
Other than that, something like Greyhound or along those lines

what country do you live in? here, trains are as cheap as it can reasonably be ( plus usually I have 50% discount, but right now, I have free tickets coz I'm searching for a job - isn't France cool, after all? :D )

No... I don't mean to offend the French (and you), but learn to speak English damnit. I happen to speak French but the rest of my family besides my parents don't. It's VERY annoying that 99% of all French I encountered didn't speak a single word english... All my bro got as a response was "Que? Je ne parle pas Anglais....".
:p Though its a nice country for sight-seeing :)
-
You're right there Miss T.
Although I remember hearing that French used to be the language of international diplomacy, so they're understandably unwilling to let it go...
-
Cullman (where she lives) doesn't have a rail system, and even if it did, a train isn't exactly practical for getting a city only 60 or so miles away. Oo;; Hitchhiking..eh..I'd do it, but she wouldn't go for it, and she definately wouldn't ditch a cab driver. <<;; So..yeah..running low on options and I'm becoming quite upset.. This is something we've been planning for months, and now it looks like it's all going to **** just when I'm ready to buy her ticket.. *sighs* Life sucks sometimes. ><;

J'ai un poission dans mon pantalons. :D :p
Rental car... They are normally near the airports... Or... If you know how to bypass the ignition...
Better yet! U-Haul! Pull up in a huge truck, with nothing in it!
-
You want one of these, Delta:

Take the airport shuttle (http://www.brickset.com/search.aspx?Query=6399). :D
Anyway, try using a taxi or a bus; the buses are cheaper while the cabs are not limited to bus stops. Of course, the best option is to not travel at all and just stay home. :D

I think he was referring to interstate trains; local trains are usually pretty cheap (the fare for the metrorail system here in the DC area is only a dollar or two) but more long-distance trains (amtrak, etc.) can indeed cost nearly as much as the plane fares.

My parents and brother spent a few days in paris a couple of weeks ago; I should ask them if they had the same experience, since they don't know a word of a french. :D

mmh? most french I know speak english.
I know more french people that speak english than the other way around :doubt:
btw, it's "quoi?", not "que" :P ( que might have been used around 1600, tho :p ) - and "quoi?" isn't really polite ( it's "what?" ).

well yeah, USA is large, but still I can't see how it can be as expensive as plane :doubt:. Unless you have some train like the TGV ( fast train in France that goes at 320 km/h ), it should still be cheaper...

no, actually, you don't. I can't understand why someone who doesn't live in a french-speaking country would learn french :doubt:

Standard on every high school here (With some exceptions to that rule). You AT least 2-3 years of French.
-
ANYWAY. To get back on topic.. A bus or motocoach would indeed be the best bet it seems, as far as cost, but..the problem is finding out weather or not she'd be able to get to the airport, or even Birmingham, in a timely fashion..

So that people don't complain.
"They teach English in France, so surely we should teach French in England."
Which is missing the point entirely.

Yeah. People who don't give a damn about English in France will remain bad, no matter how many years they're forced to learn it. just like anything else.

hey this was the name of a mathematican; so it is a normal french word as well?

I don't know; that is what I have heard anyway. Maybe the train is more luxurious or something; they must have some advantages or the train companies would be out of business by now. :D

It is similar here, but it can be any foreign language. They should drop these weird requirements and put in more math ones instead... :p

Funnily enough, it means 'fish'. Lucky for us Mr Scruff isn't french...

If the American government didn't give them huge subsidies the interstate passenger train system (except for the new england area) would have gone out of buisness long ago.

Because 90% of Europe speaks either French or English. Or both. :p Probably true of most of the rest of the world too.
In my school, we had a choice of either French of Spanish to learn as a second language. We all did French. I actually thought it was easier to learn than Spanish.

I agree. I've taken the train tons of times to commute back and forth from college. Have a look around - you're bound to find a local train (e.g. Septa) that connects to a main line somewhere. At least on the East coast. :p

I spend 5 years learning french or more accuractly, drawing stuff in my french jotter. I wish it had been japanese instead, so i could of actually learnt something useful.

Jayce!!!! i always bothered me: that series ( don't remember the english name, wheeled warriors or something? ) was made to sell the toys, but the toys don't look like the vehicles in the series , and they actually look bad ( the cartoon ones rocked ).

well, in fact, now that you mention it, there's more european countries that speak french compared to english, indeed.
-
well, to be honest, i ahte French, as a language. i've had 3 years of it now, and i'm going to have to take another one before i can drop it in favour of German. also, in those 3 years, i didn't even learn enough to ask for a bloody bread without a pocked dictionary, and pointing what i want.
about the transportation thing, as i said earlier, see if she can get a ride from a neighbour or friend.
-
[color=66ff00]I think french is quite a lovely language. *shrugs*
As for the transport question, I doubt anyone who did not live witing the vicinity of where you reside could give you a good answer. Personally I'd call in a favour from a friend or someone you know with a car.
