Thats my first try in LightWave
(http://www.swooh.com/peon/FreeTerran/renders/erinyes_fleet.jpg)
What do you think ?
-
Looks good... but I have 2 things to say about it:
- The nebula is not quite nebula-like. It appears as if space is on fire.
- Lightning is wrong. Though this is done quite often so your not the only one placing the lights wrongly. :p
-
Make the nebula more "dissolved". Basically, make it spread over a larger area and less contrasty...uhm I really can't explain it that well. As well, you could try putting a planet in the background or something.
other than that, its very cool. I take it the inspiration is that SOC mission where you have to rescue Snipes?

New version and what do youn now think ?
-
Now all you have to do is kill the ambient light, light the scene properly and you're in business.
-
Well i will give now the lights on the erinyes a glowing

OK next update now ?
-
lighting is still fuct. You want the faces that we see to be relatively dark, and the backs of the fighters to be where the light is (because the star is shining on them). Right now, it looks like the opposite.

better ?
-
1. Always disable ambient lighting or not higher then 5%
2. Use shadow maps or raytrace, but shadow maps are just as good and render time is less.
You are improving but there is still much to learn.

1 ambient lighting is at 0%
2 i use ray trace

ooh, nifty...
but one gripe...
you fixed the lighting on the erienys, but the planet still looks like the light source is next to the camera. Either use a modeled planet, or rotate it somehow to make it look like the sun is on the same side of it as it is the erieneys
-
kill the ambience use 2 spotlights to light the ships
-
Hmm, definate improvement. Try putting a glow around the planet to simulate an atmosphere. Or not, depending on what you had in mind. Try dispersing the nebula a bit. The outer edges of the pic, where there are only stars, look a bit barren.
One other thing you might try, and this really is more a matter of taste, you could try making the yellow bit of the nebula white, to give it more of a "glowy" and powerful feel.

Now with better lights so what do you think now ?
EDIT: I will add the erinyes lights tomorrow its night here and i'm tired
-
It's awsome to see how much lighting can improve things.
It's as if an entierly different - and lot more talented - artist has created the last one.
Both thumbs up!
-
it's odd. use the sun on the bacground as a reference and place the light accordingly. Now the nebula probably takes its color from the neighbouring star, so I suppose this one should glow red -> light should have a slight red tint.
then, put more distance etween the erynies, I think, they're too close to each other.
what else? mmh...
decrease the opacity of the nebula a bit.
more important: give a focal point to the camera: what is the goal of this pic? is it focused on the full wing? then center the wing on the pic. on the leader? then center onthat ship, and add range blurr to the three other ships. etc etc.
The main thing for a render to be remembered, is to give it a meaning. Steak would have said it has to tell a story. I couldn't agree more.
-
I can't believe how good you guys are at this.
It would have took me ages to come up with these advices.
Anyway I think working out the correct color for the nebula's going to be the hard part, since in theory it shouldn't have any self illumination, only reflected light from the star.
-
hey venom don't forgot thats my first render with lightwave

Yeah right and thanks for help :D

Your latest one has come quite a long way - in cases like this, lighting is everything. Also, as Venom already mentioned, the render is quite pointless - there's no big reason for me to be compelled to see it, it's not more pretty than other renders, it's not a new ship being shown, it's got no story. But that's forgiveable for a first render. Just keep it in mind for future ones :)
-
That was only an test render with tutorials
-
That last render is just about perfect.
Slap a DOTA logo on it & put it up on your website as a background :p
-
hmmm
what id do is mix stuff a little red from the neb so it would show up only a lil at the fighters and about 40% yellowish-white from behind camera :)
