Some of you wanted pics of the progress made so far on the Irken Assault Mod, so here they are. A few textures look messed up on one of the ships, but that's because my graphics card is crapping out on me. (I need a new one desperately.) Hope you enjoy these few shots we've gotten so far...

LOL! AWESOME!
Will we get to play as Dib for the Earth forces?
-
well, if Dib wasn't in it, there wouldn't be much point, would there? :) But seriously, yes, his personal ship will be available for use, but Dib himself will probably be a commander or general or something like that.
-
The ship looks like an beetle
-
you got a problem with that?
-
No why shall i have an problem ? the style is cool
-
you shall have a problem because.......becauuuusse......:nervous:
-
Blimey... very odd but very cool. Is it my imagination or are those two ships reminiscent of the Demon and Herc II/Myrmidon?
-
so will we be playing on the human side, or the Irken side?
and will ZIM be in it?
-
I want GIR to pilot the support ship. :D
This is the first I've heard of this mod. Woah. I want it!
Comm anims should be easy to come by, since there are so many instances on the show of characters talking on video screens. And the intro credits has a nice frame at the end that could be adapted to a number of interface elements. Hmmm.
So which ships are you planning on modelling? There's the big Irken command ships, the Voot Cruisers, the orbital facility, and... ummm... piggies? And what about human ships? I don't recall seeing any on the show.
-
I haven't the foggiest idea what this mod is based off of, but I like that fighter and that capship. :D

"an" is only used before vowels. its: "The ship looks like a beetle"

if you remember the episode "Dib's Wonderful Life", the grown up Dib led an earth force to intercept the Irken fleet.
-
I need to keep up with the community. This is gotta be the best mod idea I've seen in a long time, but that's probably just because I'm undeniably in love with IZ in general.
Ok, you're going to have to have the flying saucer from "Attack of the Saucer Morons". Ok, well it isn't vital, but it would still be cool to have.
And can we fly the planets like in "Battle of the Planets?" Pulllllease?

Ah, I haven't seen that one. Or Battle of the Planets. Or any recent ones, actually. :(
I'm going to sing the Doom Song now...
EDIT: Woah, major Endor Syndrome--

I just don't understand how a piece of crap channel like Nickelodeon managed to get a quality program like Invader Zim in the first place.
-
exactly. So they cancelled it :D
Anyways, I want to pilot the Foo Runner! :D
-
the massive, the armoda capitol ship. the side pods are filled with snacks, it's there weak spot. Alpha, you will be bringing down the massive.
but Dib, sir, who will lead alpha squadran?
Heyaa!
/*...lots of explosions n'stuff...*/
OUR SNACKS!!!!
It's over! Retreat!
AWHAAHHAHAHA!!!!
BTW if anyone needs there ZIM, I can help you...

exact same here.

Cool. I've wanted to see something cell shaded (or at least, as far as possible with the engine) in FS for ages :) Models look ace
-
though it does look as if they have broken the limets of the engine about 10 times over, they actualy look like (rather low poly) rendering models.
for those of you who are confused, PM me and I'll show you were you can get everything
I would just poast a link but, that would probly piss certan people off
venom, I have a feeling you'd love Invader Zim

yeah, uh, that would require us putting in a cel shader, and FS doesn't really have multiple shaders to begin with.
-
oh, how hard could it be?...
and I just figured I'd post this (http://freespace.volitionwatch.com/blackwater/GIR.avi)

mmh... well I'll look after this on google :)

Almost all the major objects in Zim already exist as 3D models.
Yeah, I know we'll never get our hands on them, but I can dream.

Did the series have a definite end or was it cut off halfway through?
I've seen five, maybe six eps of Invader Zim and I really liked it. Wonder if it'll ever make it over here.
-
Zim was cancelled without warning by the Nickelodeon Jimmy Neutron-worshipping beancounters.
You can get all 38 eps on DVD off eBay. Yes, they're bootleg.
-
or you can do a google search for the phrase "Episode guide and other various info" and maybe find a better way
if that is too big for you look for "A Closet With a Moose"
-
Just what the world needs... an Invader Zim mod.
Anyway, good work so far. Keep at it.

That's "A Room With a Moose" (it's a pun, get it?!). And since I don't have a DVD burner, I doubt I'll find anything better than that.

Heh, that would be too funny. GIR rules.
-
It would certainly explain the way the support ship flies.
And of course, there'd have to be an Admiral Scary Monkey.
Scary Monkey Show! (http://www.thescarymonkeyshow.com/)

I see everyone seems to be at least mildly interested in the mod, and I'm sure the rest of the mod team will be as overjoyed as I am. All advice is appreciated. Now to clear some stuff up:
Yes, our goal is to incorporate every ship ever iseen in the IZ series into the game somehow. All known Irken ships can be seen at www.thescarymonkeyshow.com/ We intend to use all of them, including the voot runner (of course). Also, the mod will feature all of the Earth ships featured in the "Dib's Wonderful Life of Doom" episode.
The Character list just seems to grow and grow. Characters to be seen in the mod will (at this point) include: Dib, Gaz, Prof. Membrane, Several various "filler" soldiers, GIR, Zim, the Scary Monkey, Tallest Red and Purple, and Tak (who, in my opinion, should be promoted to a general in the Irken Empire in the game).
Finally, the game will rely heavily on an unaired episode of IZ. The episode is called "Backseat Drivers from Beyond the Stars", and odds are you haven't seen it yet. If you are going to play the mod, you'll need to see this first. I have it and will be on Kazza Lite, distributing in 24/7 for the next week or two. I am under the username of sephiroth@kazza. If you have this episode, please help me distribute it so that we can spread the good... zim-my... coolness that is in this episode.
There is an alliance against the Irken Empire in this unaired episode, and that means new characters and new ships. I'm talking corvettes, etc. So find me and get it!
-Sephiroth

I have that episode, and in divix5, but the quality isn't very good, and the file is enormus, but I'llput it in with the rest of my zim(in the shared folder) you wouldn't happen to know were I could get the rest of those season 2 eps would you?
-
unfortunately, most of them aren't complete. From what I can tell, those that are are being held hostage by the bastards at nickelodeon. anyone up for busting in and liberating some zim eps with me?
-
and you have to make a node map with all the planets, like Irk and the conveyor belt planet.
-
foodcortia, conventia, blorch (home of the slaurtering rat people, concered by invader skooge), vort (concered by invader larr, former ally of Irk, major millitary reasearch prison, home of the univers' most comfortable couch), booty nin (home of the large nostraled people, concered (or about to be) by invader slaks), meekrob (nearly concered by invader tenn, if not for a few malfunctioning SIRs)
-
make it so that some of the massive's debris is snacks.
-
now if you will just give us a little puppet show depicting how you plan to complete this mod...
-
...memo to self...make massive's debris snacks.....make node map of IZ planets.........make IZ puppets and borrow freind's video camera.........
-
can we get a mission were we get to blow up space santa...
but fail miseably obviusly,
becase he's still terrorising earth 2 million years in the furure
of corse :)
-
brilliant!!!!!! I hadn't even thought of the santa suit!
.....memo to self.....thank bobbau in the credits......
i'll pry forget, but thanks a heap! (goes off, whistling happily to self)

Well, not a node map per se. Nodes don't appear to exist in the Zim universe. It's just regular go-anywhere hyperspace.

Huh? 2 million years?
-
you could have it twards the end, after zim's ship gets blowen up or something he could be drifting in space in the little invisable bubble hemet space suit thing and the in the distance he sees the santa suit, and realises he can reprogram it to anialate the humans, starting with dib.
the mission would be simply to distroy the santa suit, and all you'd need is a fairly bad looking blob in the general shape of santa and make the candy cane arms and spider legs as turrets, when you'r close enough they'll swing tring to point at you wich will result in you getting smahed around, when you're further away, they can shoot some sort of candy cain missles at you.
you manage to blast it's head off or something (spilling out ZIM) "but santa lives on"...:D
Zylon you havn't seen the Zim Most Horrible Xmas Ever christmass spectacular!?
you must get it, NOW!!! it's one of, if not the best, Zim ever, especaly the ending
...yes 2 million years
-
Ok, that's it... I'm ordering that frelling bootleg Zim DVD. (shakes fist angrily at Nickelodeon)
-
Some more characters:
"Best Friend"
The Teacher, forgot her name.
The Squirrle
The Fat guy with the mullet.
The paranormal guy (from "Career Day")
The saucer morons, and their leader.
The Babies from "Plauge of Babies"
The Hospital ward guy, also from "Plauge of Babies"
Count Chocula.
EDIT: Oh yea! And the Planet Jackers!
and some others, but I forget them :D
-
that would be
Keef
Mrs. Bitters
...squirrel...
Bill
childeren of the bright and shining saucer, led by frank (I think)
the Nargoth, led by Shnoogy
hospital ward guy is of no importance
and it's count cocoa fang!!
and I don't remember what the names of the planet jackers were
-
scarymonkeyshow.com has a fairly comprehensive character list. Doesn't include Taco Human though ("Shut your noise tube, taco human!"), which is odd, since it does include Burger Lord.
-

well, you must admit there is an uncanny similarity.
-
yeah, we have a few of those characters, but lots of them will just be cameos. the more weight they hold in the show, the easier it is to incorporate them into the storyline.
-
that thing seems... odd.
Well I like the ships, at least :p
-
That interface screen looks tight...
-
well, since you like it so much, I've taken the liberty of posting a few more pics of the interface-in-progress! check it out and tell me what ya think...
www.geocities.com/spike_al99/screens
-
Those interface backgrounds are cool, but not the least bit Zimmy.
Now this is how it should look. (http://www.nick.com/all_nick/tv_supersites/zim/wallpapers/images/zim_labr-1024.jpg)
-
ya, you can do all kinds of cool stuff with the interface art
-
i know, these are just temporary, and are to show the general color scheme. I'm keeping the background images, but I'll get aroung to changing the actual buttons and windows to look more zim-like.
-

oh, come on, it's better than your plain purple background idea!
-
You could use the frame of the pic Zylon posted with your current pic replacing the plain purple area.
-

That was merely an art style example, not a literal suggestion.
I think it would be in the best interest of the mod to maintain the bold, flat, thick-lined cartoony look of the show. There are dozens of generic space scenes throughout the episodes that would be suitable for interface backgrounds. The wavy translucent Photoshop-filter-looking stuff just doesn't fit.
-
alright, I'll run it by the other guys and see what they say.
-
BTW, in case you guys haven't found this already, here's some very high-quality source music from the show:
http://www.kmmproductions.com/music.html
-
yeah, we have it. My pal Warlord Bob just started on the music for the mod a few days ago, and as soon as we finish some music, we'll be posting clips of it on the site, once that gets up :) As the music on Kevin's site os a bit limited, Warlord Bob has asked for owners of episodes to help suggest thier fav tunes from different IZ episodes and stuff. Maybe we should start a new thread for that? I don't know...
-
I'm not that familiar with the theme either (I've heard about Invader Zim though). But the pics look good nevertheless :)
-
sorry for bumping this but I though you guys would like this (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php/topic,16893.0.html)
this mod was probly one of the biggest resons why I did it, so now all the models can look the way there suposed to look, you will need to include the black outlines in the models, but I can tell you how to do that if you don't know how.
BTW if you havn't alredy you should get some involvment with the exsisting IZ comunity, this could serve the two fold perpose of helping both comunitys
-

if that's what I think it is ( the inverted normals, right? ), that's gonna be a severe drag on resources, doubling all the polys...
-
they don't have to get lit and they don't need to be textured so it won't be too bad, I guess I could look into coding it again, but I don't think there would be any major performence boost doing it that way, the biggest slow down will be in the transforming of the verts
-

yeah. plus, to be honest, coding that would be a nightmare. major lines could be done according to the angle of the poly based on the camera position, but that wouldn't cover half the special cases ( since you've played with cell shading too, in TS, I'm sure you're well aware of the numerous problems outlines can have if the model isn't adapted to that kind of render... ).
at least, the inversed normals technic is easy to do in max, tanks to the "grow" modifier ( coz it makes the mesh inflatuate on a poly basys, unlike a plain scale up option that will most often don't work, both meshes won't conform anymore ).
-
there is a TS plugin that does basicly the same thing, it's what I used on my erlier cell shaded renderings, it works prety well even if it takes forever (in comparison to haveing a shader do it for you) and I think it's the best way to do it for a game, if it is to be done at all, wich I think it should be.
-
well yeah, I agree, of course, but as you pointed out, it's awfully resources intensive.
-
it should end up nothing after the mythical T&L upgrade :)
