Title: Modelling Woes... :(
Post by: Raptor on July 18, 2003, 12:53:01 pm
After many hours of fustration, confusion and going "huh?", I am now thinking about no longer trying to create my own Mods.

I can design the ships, and create the meshs.
I can edit existing maps, and create some new ones.
I can edit tables.
I can FRED (been ages since I did that in earnest though)

But I can not:

Texture properly
UV map
Convert TS models to FS without SOMETHING* going wrong.

*includes missing thrusters, LODs missbehaving, odd unknown limits reached.........

This is a general call for help.  If anyone is willing to help out, please raise your hand/claw/tentacle......

Otherwise, my GTD Saturn (may be changed to GTD Hera), regunned Hades, and other craft (too many to list here) will most likely never grace the FS battlezones.....

Cue funeral music, 'The Last Post'

(imagine a Shivan raising it's claw) :D

Could you add more information on your problems?
As for missing thrusters, you have to make a submodel for them (if you refer to the "flame" streaming out of the engine) or use pof editors like PCS (if you refer to engine glowpoints).
And for texturing/UVmapping I think other people would like to help out if your models are good enough.
Sorry that I can't help directly, but I'll be off for a while. :(

Consider yourself lucky. MG has just me and I'm pretty much a hack when it comes to modding (FREDding is my true calling)

We are set in the Sol system. That means we can't use ANYTHING from FS2 and that most of the FS1 fleet are obsolete.

So far we've mostly used mods that have been released by others but there are a whole bunch of mods we will need.

The DOTA will have 50 new models (no rips of other mods) but if we not find more modellers we must cancel the 50 ships

Well good luck with that but since I'm not trying to do the impossible I've got just as much right to a modder as you do :D

Anyway to get back on topic. If no one else is willing to help you Raptor I'm willing to have a look at your capships but I can't help with the fighters since I've never put one together (I'll be in a better place to help with that once I've finished that vasudan ship I posted a few threads back).

Well, the thruster 'flame' is modelled in TS, it is textured, and it shows up in modelview.  But not in game :wtf:

LODS: I've had LODs pushed down a level (so at 'level 1' there is NOTHING! ). I think I've fixed that, but most recently I've got a ship that displays fine in Modelview, but shows LOD4 in FRED, and crashs the game as soon as the mission starts :hopping:

Can't get mapping by face in TS (I've only got 3.2 ), so capships generally look rubbish, though sometimes the turrets work well...

Lilith makes me all confused, and I can't get the model to use the map.  Must be doing something wrong, though I'll be dammed if I know what.

Oh FT,

smack across forehead ala 'Faulty Towers'

I'm already signed into your forum at angels Graveyard.  Trashman (or was it you? ) asked me if I could texture some fighter craft.  (by that I mean put the colours and details into the maps that are already applied to a model).  Haven't heard anything yet......

What else.... oh yes my Saturn's firing arcs/normals are still messed up, despite me editing them in PCS ( would use modelview, but the fully armed version is 'invaild' :wtf::mad::hopping: )

I'm thinking about creating a batch of meshs, and presenting them to the community to work on, much like Aldo's model dumps (I'm sitting here with a piece of paper in front of my keyboard, with a possible 'next gen Terran medium bomber, Medusa replacement, that has a railgun under the belly' sketched on it ;7 )

Infact, I've got dozens of sketches of ships hanging around.....

Now I'm waffling, so I'll shut up.

Why would they be obsolete? I think they would be heavily modified, like say an Orion with 20 more turrets placed around, but I doubt all of the old models that served them so well would be scrapped...

Ask yourself this, how many of them survived into FS2 :) There were quite a few being used by the NTF but how many FS1 ships were the GTVA still using? Why would Earth do things differently? In fact Earth would be more worried about an impending shivan attack cause they would have no idea that the GTVA won. They would spend more money on R&D to make sure that they could stop the shivans if they reopened the node.
Some ships like the Orion will survive since the Orion is such a kick-arse ship that even though it is over 32 years old the GTVA is still using it.

Exactly. I picture Sol turning into a militarilistic System, based around preparing for the worst. Remember, the Orion is great, but some ships like the Fenris or Apollo are probably outdated for the Sol fleet. The Sol fleet probably doesn't have Beams either, or if they do, they wouldn't be exactly like the GTVA's.

Another thing to keep in mind, Sol realistically has at least an equal amount of manpower when compared to the rest of the GTA, probably a lot more. The other systems in Freespace were still only colonies basically. Earth has like 6 billion people on it now, 300 years in the future, unless we have some uber kill all war, we'd at least have something like 15 or 20 Billion ( I don't know how much we can realistically support, but there's always technological advances) and then there's the rest of the Sol System that would be colonized. So I'd guess somewhere around 40 Billion for the whole system (guessing the can terraform stuff and what not).

That having been said (40 is just a guess, I don't really know), I don't think the GTVA's 20 - 40 year old systems would barely have half that amount of people, much less in the military.

Just something to keep in mind, just because Sol is one system, hardly makes it weaker or anything.  :)
