Title: Performance Tip... (works for all of FS2, but useful here)
Post by: Fineus on July 19, 2003, 07:38:00 pm
Hail all,

Just found out an incredibly handy little performance tip for anyone who's hacked their registry to enhance FS2s graphics.

If you've got a DWORD "D3DPreloadTextures" in your registry settings and it's at "1", and you also have a lot of FPS drops in Inferno, set it to "0". This is because Inferno uses incredibly huge texture maps that kill off RAM on some systems (like my 512MB of DDR RAM). This resulted in crappy performance. Disabling the precache removed this problem entirely.

Thanks, that helped my comparatively paltry 320MB of SDRAM. :D

I had 128mb SDRam and only got performance issues in the Sol gate missions, now I have 1024 DDR and it runs fine.

It maybe more of a graphics card issue than a ram one.

the way rendering is handled in fs2, speed is more dependant on CPU speed than on GPU speed.

My K6-2 500 plays it at 1024x768 with next to no slowdown, even in the missions at Sol Gate, may want to check your settings.

1024x768 32 bit. It's just that I like to run kazaa in the background, along with music match jukebox... and sometimes trillian.

According to kazan, my PC shouldn't even be able to play FS... lol

i usually get ~50 fps using the scp stuff (no glowmaps or cloaking).  the explosions really slow it down for some reason where it drops to ~10 :wtf:

:blah: What are your settings? I have a P3 of the same clock speed but I get constant slow-downs...

I'm set at Very High.

I also have 256mb of SDRAM and a Geforce 4 MX 420 PCI.

No slowdowns for me and my Athlon XP (with glowmaps on and detail set to the highest possible level for everything), except for one never-to-be-released test mission I made in FRED with 80+ ships in the mission at once (when you start the mission, the directives read "destroy fighters (76)").

If thats one of the more recent ones...its probably the faster...erm, I don't know...floating point operations or whatever compaired to Intel that really helps in those odd situations in FS2.  No slow downs on my 2700+.  SUPAR fast :)

Here's that thread with the performance thing I mentioned, mate.

Well INF runs with a bit of slowdown on my old PC:

P3 650MHz
128MB SD RAM
16mb ATI Rage Fury

doesn't crash though, a 32mb card should help with the slowdown.

My current Athlon XP 3000+ system has no slowdown at all :D

1.7 GHz Celeron
256 DDR RAM
Radeon 9100 video card

No slowdowns here.

hmm thats a bit weird...
P4 1.7Ghz 512mb SDRAM GF4 Ti4200

using FSOpen with 1024x768x16

My comp regularly slows down when explosions happen or im facing a large fleet of ships, might try that

EDIT: i have no d3dpreloadtextures in my registry

Running it on Open was a resource hog, even my 1,6 P4 has trouble handling it (512 RDRam).

The HT&L would help though (if they removed that distance chekc for the Sol mission).

you can't remove the far clipping plane though.  its required to even get HT&L to work

Hmmmm.... would it be possible to tag an object as Decoration and have it ignored by the distance check?

Flipside :D

Here's another performance tip that is not recommended anyone should follow: Don't install Windows updates.

Do I need to do this with 1024MB DDR RAM, Radeon 9700 Pro 128MB DDR and AMD 2700+?

no, with that kind of spec you want the high res tetures.

Hello Everyone, i'm new to this BB :D

I've played Inferno some time ago, and i'm playing it without sscp and graphs are still great :D Inferno runs good on my antique pc:
300mhz/64ram/tnt m64

I'm playing it of course at 640x480 16bit but only in larger battles i need to shut one hardware textures light, but in other mission inferno is working perfectly
