Title: Bad News
Post by: DragonClaw on January 09, 2002, 08:50:00 pm
HT(Hidden Terror) is cancelled... was thinking about it lately anyway, but my format sealed it.

I had to format my comp because it wouldn't start up, windows gave me an error "cmdinst caused an error in kernel32.dll" or something... even did that when I was INSTALLING WINDOWS.

So... I lost all of my campaign...the one I had uploaded is old so I don't wanna go through with it again... so Hidden Terror is cancelled.

Sorry to hear this.  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/frown.gif)

This is the third time I have seen a project cancelled due to a hard drive faliure, and I once had the same problem but luckily happened to have a backup; I would strongly advise everyone working on any sort of project to make several copies of their stuff in the case of such an event. Put the stuff on removeable media or another computer, upload it somewhere, send it to your friends, whatever...but make sure that redundant copies exist. I really hate seeing a great idea go down because of technicial problems.  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/frown.gif)

No it would not start up in safe mode either... I tried everything... I'm pretty much a computer technician myself. I'm thinking it was a virus or something, because it even happened when I was reinstalling windows too.

And there was nothing I could have done anyway... once windows gave me the error right after you "log in", the whole screen goes grey and there's no mouse, no icons, no nothing... it was weird.

Would there be any interest from mod/campaign designers for offsite, network based file dumps for the purposes of backing up these things?

I've got plenty of drivespace on my web and db servers that could be put to use for this purpose.

Would be cool, but uploading my 700 or so mb of data for OtT would be quite a pain  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif)

True, but realistically, you'd want to compress what could be, and upload gradually.

I'm going to think about how to put this together in a sane way. In the meantime, I think I will purchase a tape backup unit to put in the DB server (i need one anyway).

How 'bout FTP?
Should be easy enough.

Two problems with that
Least:
#1: It wasn't the kernel that was the prob, it was the cmdinst or something...
#2: I couldn't get INTO windows ANYWAY to transfer it.

There's more to it than just the file transfer method. Just off the top of my head, here's the issues I see:

- Security. FTP sends username/password combinations in the clear. This is bad.
- Fair use. I've only got so much hard drive space (admittedly, a lot, but still limited), so I need to parcel that out fairly.
- Backups. I need a way so that users could choose which files were committed to tape regularly, and a way to recall archived data back (in the event of accidental deletion). I don't want to sit around waiting for undelete requests.
- Automatic signup/setup. I don't want to have to do all this by hand, all the time. I do need some time to keep modding Iwar2   (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/wink.gif).

That's the quick list. Once I were to start working on this in earnest, I'm sure I would find some more issues.

Have you tried an undelete program? The files might still be on your HD and fairly uncorrupted.

I love backups and CD-Rs! its time for another I think!

I have a secondary 5GB hard drive parition on my computer used for backups (problem with CD-Rs is that the data is permanently imposed onto them); it won't protect from physical damage to the unit, but the data remains safe in case the main drive is wiped due to a software problem.    (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif)

BTW does anyone here happen to have a bit of space on their server that they wouldn't mind someone using? I basically just need some place to upload the file for my campaign (around 8MB) for public tests and such. The Prohosting servers I am using are a bit unreliable and have some ads, while the @Home servers (other place I can access) don't have the ads but are far more buggy, so I am still looking around to see if I can grab a bit of space somewhere.   (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif)
