Title: Mod Movies
Post by: Krackers87 on July 21, 2003, 01:20:52 pm
As soon as i get my web site rehosted im going to start showcasing mods with the use of movies. Currently i have done 4 examples of a showcase for Bobboau's GTF Odysseus and want to know which one looks best. Also i think you need a codec to view the movies because of the way i compresed them. Xp users put it in your Win32 Dir and non XP just Windows

Codec (http://www.divx.com/divx/)

Static External View (http://swooh.com/peon/Bubsy87/Mods/Ships/odyseusStatic.avi)

External Pan From Hostile Craft (http://swooh.com/peon/Bubsy87/Mods/Ships/Odysseusfromshivan.avi)

Pilots View (http://swooh.com/peon/Bubsy87/Mods/Ships/OdysseusPilot.avi)

External Pan from Odysseus (http://swooh.com/peon/Bubsy87/Mods/Ships/OdysseusPan.avi)

Manually copying a DLL is so NOT the correct way to install a codec. A link to the official download source (http://www.divx.com/divx/) is.

no, that is the link to divx 5, not 3.12. on the other hand I could agree that copying a dll isn't the proper way to install it.

I haven't downloaded the movies yet (56K here) so I don't know what they look like. But if Icefire said is true it needs better detail. Much like this (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php/topic,15911.0.html) [shamelessly :thepimp:ing Blender ani]

...um, krackers: why?

I mean, it's much simpler, quicker, and more efficient to use screenshots or on-line model viewers, rather than going thru all the trouble of downloading huge video files.

even while that is true, backwardscompatibility doesn't mean it's as good at playing older video clips than the old codec was.

did windows 95 get better at running DOS applications?

How the [censor] can you compare OS's with video codecs? :p  New codecs can sometimes even improve the playback of older versions. At least the do not degenerate. (Not with divX anyway)

movies depict beter what the ship doees. If you want it in better res itl cost you 8 fps and 30 more megs. You dont have to think its a good idea, I do and thats enough. Now which one is best in your opinion?

Don't get me wrong, I'm all for the new guys strying to contribute, but when you start ranting and raving, or start doing stuff that's already been done, just because you don't like the old one, and complaining when everybody else likes the old version just fine, it's kinda annoying.

Quite right, but perhaps the burnt hand will teach best - if he ever does make database of MOD movies, it will achieve precisely nowt.

Movies are cooler than stills. They're also a mighty allfucking pain in the ass to do properly, but that's his problem. That enough for ya?

At the moment, they are just clips of ships doing things.  Not alot of thought or effort so far has gone into actually turning that into something.  A movie can be a very effective tool and so far you've done well to get the techinical side of things down (capture and display of the movies) now you need to work on presentation.

Background nebulas, more attention to targets and compositions of the ships being shot at and doing the shooting.  Perhaps combine multiple MOD's (for instance similarly themed mods) into a single slightly longer video for presentation (complete with a small dialogue somewhere saying what it is).

Interesting idea, just one question though: Where do I put that codec file? :p ;)

bin  boot  dev  etc  home  lib  mnt  opt  proc  root  sbin  tmp  usr  var

you dont (my Bad) someone posted the installer near the top.

Ok backrounds and stuff sound good. I dont know about multiple mods in one vid unless it was a mod pack. And im not trying to throw my weight around, I get a little frustrated sometimes, theres a difference. Throwing my weight around depicts me more tryin to order people around become boss in a way. I just got pissed at people who are cinical or tell me that i shouldnt do it because its already done.

In my defense, why the hell do you care if I waste my time?

Most people here are probably just hoping that you do make something of great interest to everyone.

I mean a showcase of multiple MOD's in a single video.  Take multiple videos and then create a sort of collage depicting the best of each video that you took.  I do this sort of thing all the time (I sadly don't have the tools at home, only in the labs on campus).

How about you do something usefull, instead of buggin people about them helping you out with something that they don't even want? And what would really help you out, come to think of it, is if you would DO something that people want! Now THERE'S a novel idea!

Congratulations! You have just proved the theory that there is no limit to human stupidity. You should offer your posting style to hospital operating theatres as a highly-effective alternative to unconsciousness-inducing medications.

If brains were gasoline, you wouldn't have enough to drive an ant's Go-cart around the inside of a bottle cap. You are obviously suffering from Clue Deficit Disorder. Anyway, who was talking to you or even taking you under consideration? How true is Stanislaw J. Lec's famous remark: "Every now and then you meet someone whose ignorance is encyclopedic."

Reading your post is less interesting than watching paint dry. If wit was spit, your mouth would be drier than a shallow well in an African heat wave. Genius does what it must, talent does what it can, and you had best do what you're told, you dyslexic lobotomy patient. Maybe you wouldn't read like such a pathetic loser if you weren't so dense that light bends around you; if your weren't so fat that your cereal bowl has its own lifeguard, or if you didn't have a face so ugly that even your mother didn't know which end to put the diaper on. No, come to think of it, you would.

In closing, I offer these heartfelt words: Go suck on a frozen pineapple, asshole.

-----Warning: Not aimed at anyone!-----

:p :p :p :p :p :p

You know your very rude. I want to do it if not for anyone else but for myself. All im asking for is a little advice about how to make it better and while some people actualy do give me advice (and i thank them for it) others like you just seem to want to put me down and complain to me and bug me about how you think it is Use less and im wasting my time etc....  and dont threaten me. It doesent work. Besides im not going after anyone. If you dont want to be bugged by me dont look at my posts, ignore it, be mature. Simple. Its not your forum.

Hey, I don't **** on newbies unless they get pushy. He hasn't demanded anything yet, far as I've seen.

Anyway, Krackers, did you have any specific questions? Your film speed is a tad too high (probably low capture rate combined with a high frame rate- reducing the color palette helps with the capture speed somewhat), and the image was a bit small to see anything specific at least in the one I managed to download without my computer crashing (it does that, not your problem), but other than that there's really nothing to actually wrong that I know of...

Anyway, the pilot view would probably be the best if it actually showed the model for more than about half a second. Static cameras are really dull.

i haven't looked at the movies, and probably won't...it's not my area.  But if someone is learning to do movies, then reguardless of what they are making a movie of, i aplaud the effort.  Because in the future, we will be wanting people to do cutscenes and trailers for our mods, and anyone who knows how to do it, and to do it well will be in demand.

keep going krackers.
