Title: Player docking ships
Post by: TopAce on July 22, 2003, 08:23:53 am
I am not certain that this one was a pont before, but I think if the player would be able to dock with another ship(s) would be a useful feature. If the player is to grab up a cargo container in the case no transports are available for that and the base is to be evacuated quickly. Like in X-wing alliance, the Shift-P or Shift-D command.

Can it be made?

This has been pointed out many times.  We currently can't do any advanced docking rather than docking with support ships.  In order to implement what you're suggesting, new changed to AI would be implemented also, plus autopilot.

Yes, I asked about this a while ago. In fact what I'd like is the ability to have the computer take over control of a player ship to exectue AI commands like dock or follow-waypoint. Thus we could have the player press a key to activate a docking sequence, or an autopilot which follows waypoints set by the missions designer just like AI-controlled ships can do.

So it is impossible to do? :nervous:

No, but nobody's taken it up yet.

Or, you could set it so that the player was forced to head towards a waypoint for a few hundred meters if he went too far from the centre battlefield and the ground was about to run out...

What a versatile, intelligent and potentially so useful idea!

But instead we're getting HT&L...

*shrugs* This is something I'd like to do, but I've been having computer troubles all summer. :(

How much work would it be? It is only an idea, I personally have no much use for a feature like that, I just recommended it.

How about actually docking with a ship's fighterbay to end a mission?

That's been implemented for a while now.  Use distance-ship-subsystem in conjunction with end-mission.

it WOULD be pretty cool though.  so like when you dock you lose speed (cause you're carrying a big thing), and manueverability... and when you let it go you gain that again ;)
