[color=66ff00]H.I.G. this is the kind of thing that artists get paid an awful lot of cash for, I think these guys are aghast at the fact that you're asking them to do it for nothing more than self gratification.

All amateur artists laughing at the offer should note that having a published CD cover in your portfolio is a lot better than having only renders posted at some obscure forum.

Are you an accomplished artist? Do you have a great portfolio? Yes? Good. No? This is a good way of having a real, published work on your portfolio. He gets something for free? Sure, but so does you - publicity and professional recognition.

styxx said it well publicity and professional recognition.

Which doesn't count for much small-time. I've done pro photography work for a racing company for free- do I get any recognition for it? No, because it was a smallish company, and I'm not planning on mapping out racetracks for the rest of my life. Never mind it was good work, such that can be applied to many jobs- nobody you give a resume to is gonna care much about that, there are only about 10,000 other people applying for the job who have roughly similar "sorta applicable" skills. Even more if you're talking CG and ****- this ain't rocket science, most of the time, and any little punk with upper-middle-class parents can afford tools that make up for most of the skill gap.

Unless anyone here plans on opening up an extensive CD-label business, this "professional recognition" won't get 'em much of anywhere. Saying you did a CD cover for an amateur singer in Japan and hence are qualified to get a job is just... weak.

You'll have to do better than that, man. I can think of much more directly applicable niche jobs I could have filled on Utopia, inc., which actually would be something sensible to put on paper (actually, much more than it's practical in real life, which is the point of the project), but I'm not arrogant enough to expect that anyone'd work for me for free, much less fight over the opportunity to do so. ****, anyone who wants to work up some professional cred can just go onto one of the dev boards with a decent portfolio and get a job- one that actually pays (albeit with **** salaries) and entitles you to classify yourself as a game developer, etc. and name complete, expansive products thousands or tens of thousands of people will see.

Fact, the only reason nobody does is that most people around here are bone idle. Hell, look at the campaigns- we feel like "working" on this **** maybe once a month.

... I miss good old English.

Anyway, you haven't even specified what kinda CD cover you want. "Just some kind of image" isn't exactly specific.

It's sad when a guy has to provide his own laugh track.

It's even sadder when I have to do this sort of sniping for everybody, because nobody else is doing it.

WHAT THE HELL IS WRONG WITH YOU PEOPLE???

Well I might as well have some fun.

Alright here's my questions:

Required image size and color depth.
(Pixel size x Pixel size, color depth in bpp)

Required symbols/text.
Title of the album, is this done at Sony and we simply need to provide the artwork?

Album theme.
Is there an overall theme to the CD that the cover art should reflect?

If I know those two things, I'll take a shot at this on monday :)

Required image size and color depth.
idea was that  peoples make  640x480 picture so we can edit it and use it for Marketing and make good as you can

Required symbols/text.
Made by Sony

Album theme.
you can choose if you want but if i rememper from early  concept
theme Theme was mountains

if you ask why  640x480 we do that all ways

and send it here [email protected] or my icq i can`t give Sony`s E-mail right now there is lot of proplems in there and our webmaster is so lazy and i am vacation

if you could do something like this it would be cool or better
and if you could add some future feeling in that was our artist idea btw and if you got better idea than this it`s all right we love new ideas.

Just your standard Terragen, correct?
Title: one offer in life time
Post by: TheCelestialOne on July 26, 2003, 12:12:26 pm
Basically, yes. All you need to do is generate terrain, make a few surface layers (snow, grass, rock and sand) and render :p

Now, that could be seriously improved if you'd actually took some time using Terragen, but I'm not gonna write up an entire tutorial here

That's a sample pic of the cover I've done up. (It's 2am Monday here, so I kept my word ;) )

I've sent the link where I've uploaded a non-compressed bitmap of it to Holy Imperial Gloriano.

Title: one offer in life time
Post by: Bobboau on July 28, 2003, 10:01:18 pm
so, what is the music like, I might do something if I feel like it, but I mean is this sort of hard rock, techno, or is it (as I am assuming) your standard japaniese soft rock cute cat eared anime poke'mon ^_^ thing.
what is the name of the album?
what is the general feel of the whole thing suposed to be?
not only do you not give us anything for our efforts you don't give us an idea of what you want or what it's suposed to be for,
would a danceing happy flower be good or would a decomposeing skull with someone ****ing the empy eye soket be more apropriate?

You mean 14? Her profile states she's in her third year of middle school (9th grade in the US system). She's not exactly a new amateur, nobody kid either.

On www.oricon.co.jp there's a daily singles ranking, her recent single "Realize" happens to be 12th. I have a very hard time believing Sony would leave a CD album's cover image of a rather popular singer to some unknown, smallish web community in the middle of internet-nowhere (don't take that as a diss HLPers :p). Please excuse my skeptism, but is this authentic?
Title: one offer in life time
Post by: Gloriano on July 31, 2003, 11:54:52 am
yeah i forgot that she is 14

and this is just test what amateur artists can do and this was unofficial art contest that was in our head few years begin in our artist head and sony is customer frendly so we got this idea

why i started it here i seen lot good art stuff here so i got idea to post this here to test

and she is not amateur

and note if we don`t get more contest entrys we got cd-cover art ready for her album

and our artist wanted look some amateur made cd-covers if they
would fit and of course they will be edited

and this was our artists idea to post here when i was here one time with our artist he  wanted look to art gallerys he liked those arts

i wanted to post to somewhere else this but our artist wanted to post here in end he did win

okay i am not boss in sony yet but my boss trust all things i do

That right there would worry me. Doing free art work for the sole purpose of getting something published is one thing. Giving the credits to the company is another.
