Title: Another One - Where Can I Get A Copy FS2 - Game Of The Year?
Post by: DOH2003 on July 28, 2003, 12:37:17 am
I am certain this is a question you get here constantly, if it's getting tired as a topic I'm sorry.  I just lost a bid to buy Freespace 2 Sci-Fi Game Of The Year Edition on E-bay.  I lost, and the winner paid $109 bucks for it.  I've been playing FS1 Battlepack and I REALLY would like to get my hands on this sequel.  ANY assistance or ideas that you might offer would be greatly appreciated.  I saw that some people had downloaded it with e-mule and KaZaA Lite, which seems a but dicey, but I'm about to join the cyber-snatcher club if I can't find a reasonable way to pay for this game.

Like I said, any help would be sincerely appreciated.

If you are sure it has been asked, why not search for the thread?

Anyway, download your free, legal copy of fs2 right here:
http://www.the-underdogs.org/game.php?id=4150
I can't remember where to get the hi-res, voice, and music stuff, but I know it's floating around somewhere.:)

Due to Interplay being the ****tards they are, you can no longer buy fs2 in stores. So downloading it with a filesharing proggy is also legal.

Someone will come in here and welcome you, but I forgot the URL to the beam.

Hey, thanks for the help.  I tried a search for Freespace 2 downloads but it did not return your link.  In any event I really appreciate the info.  Do you know which version of the game this is?  I'm not really clear on what the difference is between the standard version and the GOTY version, except more levels I suppose.

I'm still going to go on the unicorn hunt for the full boxed version, it must be amazing to generate this much love.

"get the hi-res, voice, and music stuff"?

Not sure what that means either.  I'll do a search, how about that?  Look!  It can LEARN.

The exe's are only part of what is needed for the full FS2 experience. The voice acting, command briefings, interface art etc. come in seperate .vp files, and it is these he was referring to. The files you're looking for are:

root_fs2.vp (mission and table data, comes with HoTU download)
sparky_fs2.vp (models and in-game sounds, comes with HoTU)
sparky_high_fs2.vp (high-res pack for 768x1024)
stu_fs2.vp (voice acting)
warble_fs2.vp (music, might come with HoTU download, not sure)
smarty_fs2.vp (tech room animations)
tango1_fs2.vp (act1 command briefing animations)
tango2_fs2.vp (act2 command briefing animations)
tango3_fs2.vp (act3 command briefing animations)

All these belong in the main FS2 directory. The game is playable with just root and sparky, if empty placeholder files for the files from missing .vp's are placed in the appropriate data directory folders. If you can get the missing .vp files, you will need to clean out your data directory of the corrosponding files, as anything there overrides the files in .vp's - the whole reason it can be played without most of them without crashing as long as the data directory has the placeholders.

Try checking the FS2 FTP server thread stickied in this forum, might be able to find some of them there.

*Fire Control, target DOH2003. Warm up the beam. And... FIRE!*
(http://members.cox.net/~wmcoolmon/images/welcome.gif)
Exits are to the sides and rear. Personal flamethrowers are located beneath your seat in case of emergency or naughty disposition. If you run into any Shivans while crawling through the ductwork, it's probably just Carl. Give him your lunch, back away slowly, and you'll be fine.

Incidentlly, whats the difference between regular FS2 and Game of the Year? Any new ships or missions that I should be aware of?

Where you at, DOH? You could get somebody to burn a copy and send it to you. Postage can't be that much for a few CDs...

I first want to say - WOAH.  What an amazing forum.  When you join one you always hope that it will, in some way, resemble this one.  And of course they rarely do.  All I know is that if this piece of art called a computer game - Freespace 2 - garners this level of support I may have made a mistake not just coughing up the big bucks for the E-Bay deal.  Thank you to everyone, regardless of how this whole thing turns out you've been remarkable.

Enough butt lathering.

I am in the Dayton, Ohio area.  I would be more than happy to ship off some money and three blank CDs to get the full sci-fi GOTY year edition of Freespace 2.  I have a proxy e-mail I could post through Spammotel and it could be used to arrange it all.  I would not consider it a risk, reward being the holy grail this game represents.  Further, I'd be more than willing to offer the same to other new guys in the future.  And if I'm not mistaken there are docs for the game available on PDF (I think I saw that somewhere on this forum).  So if this can, through the good graces of one of you fine people, come to pass... well I would just crap with joy.  Let me know and I'll smack that contact e-mail up here and get someone's address, and race to the post office and send you the needed funds and some CD's.

Thank you, thank you, and no kidding, THANK YOU.

Lol - someone send this guy the CDs, before he spontaneously combusts in anticipation ;). (Anyway, we need all the new blood we can get :)) I'd do it myself, but I'm in Australia.

Welcome aboard Doh2003, and glad you like FS2! :)

I've only got the original FS2, and I'm in England, so sorry on both counts, but I'm sure we'd all like to hear how you get on, oh yes, and once you've finished the campaign, try some of the user campaigns on the site, and certainly take a look at the Source Code Project!

Flipside :)

Same here - original version, and I'm in the UK, so I can't do it, but somebody will!

Anyway, welcome to HLP (again), and enjoy it! :)

I live in north Texas and I could burn the three CDs of the SOTY edition for you. I'm a pretty cheap person though, and I'd also probably ask for 25 cents for each CD atop of the shipping, which can't be more than $3.50 with priority mail or $1.87 through snail mail. Give me a PM or an e-mail if you're interested.

I'm a musician and I was on the road for a bit, but I'm still VERY interested in getting the game that cannot be had.

To Garfield3d (or anyone else willing), if you'd be willing to do this for me I'd just send you a $10 and be very grateful.

If this is cool I'll put an e-mail up here and we can exchange info.  Let me know, and of course I thank you profusely.

Hiyas again. That sounds like a spiff plan. You can slap me at [email protected] if you haven't found anyone else to burn it.
