i'm in india, i can't even get good games here, so forget getting fs2. i got fs1 though thru a friend who came from the us to study here....
if it's legal to download freespace 2, why don't someone put up the 3 cds for download by ftp or on the web, i mean using a filesharing utility is not practical for 3cds as it will take hazar time to download them because in filesharing , u can't use ur full bandwidth always but from the web u can...
i have a 64kbps digital line and a T3 professional line....
T3 will not work for file sharing utilities as the server blocks them...
if they are on the web, T3 will download all 3 cds in 4 hours
(is the 3rd cd neede to play the game, i hear it is just full of extra stuff)

Please relate your question in one thread. Believe me, its more effecient. ;) Check my reply in the other thread for more details.
Yes, it is legal to download Freespace 2, since it is now open source. Download it from Home of the Underdogs. (http://www.the-underdogs.org/game.php?id=4150)

No you don't. You can get a full copy of FS2 (Minus the cutscenes) using the HotU download and the files on the Freespace FTP I've linked to from my FAQ.
The CD's are not available anywhere that I know about anyway.
-
I'm from India as well- but i managed to get FS2 from (information withheld due to legal issues). I suggest you look around in the not-so-savy places, preferably the modern ones rather than the bazaars.
If you are in Bangalore, you might try Computer Galaxy in Brigade road, i'm not saying anything more.
:nervous:

you can use eBay in India, right?

eBay = too expensive and in US$ :p
Not to mention delivery problems and what-not. you NEVER trust the indian mail or even indian couriers :nervous:

My parents and brother recently went to India for a month; there seemed to be a lot of old games in the stores there that are hard to find around here in the US. There was System Shock 2, which is nearly impossible to find at retail these days, for 200 rupees (around $5), so I told them to pick that up.

lol is that one of those black market outlets? I've been to those a couple of times; excellent prices in those places. :D

well, is anyone willing to give the cutscenes for download...
-
The problem is that someone has to convert them first. No one seems to be doing that anymore.
I'll do it myself if someone will tell me what are the best compression modes to use in VirtualDub. I've already converted most of the files to avi but considering they are 1-4 Gig uncompressed Avi files they really aren't ready to be uploaded yet.
-
what do they have to be compressed to to play in FS2?
-
i would download and use divx codecs

Have you any idea how long it would take me to upload 14 Gig of Cutscenes? That's 4 DVD's worth. Who would download that? The Intro alone is 4 Gigs in size.
As for using DIVX sure. But what settings? What bitrate for the audio? Hell, what compression for the audio? I've got codecs for all the major methods but I don't know which ones are actually worth using.
I don't want to waste my time encoding the files if someone ends up having to redo them cause they can shave off 3-4 Megs using a different codec/bitrate.
-
Anyone? Fine if no one answers I'll just pick one at random and anyone who complains can kiss my arse!
-
It really doesn't matter.
I'd compress 'em and ship 'em to UD, but the videocapture method sucks and nobody'll get off their lazy arse to send me the MVE2AVI converter that works. Typically.
Anyway, all the important cutscenes are in the download- the ones that are really relevant to plot and such. If ya want more, friggin' pay for it. It's a large country, with multiple cities and many software outlets. You see me complaining because it took me two years to score a copy of TLJ?
-
Download virtual dub and once the mve is made into an avi, run it through virtual dub, multi-pass crap, and about a 700bps bitrate. Should drop the size dramatically.
-
Why doesn't someone upload CD images to that FTP server? All 3 CDs would take up slighly over 2GB, but even I could upload that much given a few days. With the CD copies, people could get the cutscenes to play.
-
How long would it take @ 111K/sec?
Cuz I could...
-
i actually have never seen the cutscenes for fs2.... coz i have the hotu version....
so i have 2 things to say...
u can directly upload the mve cutscenes coz i prefer to be able to see them as i play the game...
or
u can covert to avi using mve2avi, use virtualdub,
for video use microsoft mpeg4 v2/v3 at a data rate of say 1000kbps and audio of mpeg layer 3 at 128kbps...
(I would be grateful if someone could give me the mve files directly)
(also, i have the 2 cds for fs1 but my hallfight.mve on cd2 plays only half. i got the avi version but i need the mve file)

I tried copying the INTRO.MVE file into my FS2 directory, then removing the CD. However, when I started the game, it did not play the MVE. Does anyone know if FS2 will only play the MVE files if they're on the CDs?
I also have a copy of a MVE player that turns the FS2 MVE files into EXE files so anyone can play them. Wouldn't that be easier than converting them into AVI files, considering all the compressing you'd have to do?

You can't play .exe files in Freespace. FS2_open however can play .avi files.
As for not playing the mve files where did you put them? I know for a fact that FS2 can play MVE files from the HD cause I once dropped the FS1 intro into my data folder when I was playing the FS1 port and got that instead of the FS2 intro :D
-
For FS2 to play cutscenes from your hard drive, you need to go to the data directory, make a new subdirectory called 'movies', and place the cutscenes there.
-
^ Tried that. Doesn't seem to work, at least not for the INTRO.MVE (placed it in F:\FreeSpace 2\data\movies). I even went into the Tech Room and tried to play the cutscene from there, but it said "Movie not found. Put the FreeSpace 2 CD 2 into drive".
-
Theres actually a file somewhere that says where the movies are located. I think I saw one for FS 1 atleast...
-
Try this. Put Bastion.mve (the smallest one) in the folder but rename it to intro.mve. It might be that the game looks for the CD automatically but plays off of the HD anyway.
What happens if you click cancel to it's request for CD2?

That will be Cutscenes.tbl I had a look at it and all you can do is specify the CD which the cutscene is on. I don't think you can tell it to look elsewhere.

I tried renaming Basion.MVE to Intro.MVE but that doesn't work either. If the FS2 CD 2 isn't in the drive when you start Freespace, it will not play anything and instead goes straight to the pilot selection screen.

Nothing, it just returns me to the Tech Room cutscenes screen. Neither clicking OK or Cancel on that dialog screen will play the movie.

Actually I meant with the CD in the drive. I wanted to know which one it would play.
You could try a no CD crack.
-
It doesn't care which intro.mve it plays, just that it plays one off a cd. I had the FS1 cd in, and FS2 was playing FS1'a intro, so... :/

That does seem to work. With the Bastion.MVE renamed to Intro.MVE and with the second CD in my drive, it plays the Bastion cutscene.
I don't have a no CD crack for the game, though, so I can't test that.
-
i hear u executor....
but still if your willing to give me the mve files, i will be glad, coz i can do the converting & fiddling etc... myself.

Let me put it this way. The Avi files for all the cutscenes in FS2 are 134 Meg in size. The intro alone is a 200Meg MVE file. Can you see why no one is prepared to upload the MVE's now?
Secondly there is little point in uploading them anyway. If you download the MVE files you'll find they don't play in FS2_open so you'll need to download the avi files anyway.
-
The cutscenes are 700MB in total. I could first convert the MVE files into EXEs using the (illegal?) MVE player then upload them.

Don't bother. I'm on this problem already.
-
OK, I've tested the no CD crack with the cutscenes, and the movies play if they're in the data/movies directory.

I didn't want to say anything while I was still uploading. The cutscenes and campaign file to make them work in FS2 are now available.
-
someone said that they were already uploaded, where are they now!
if the mve files ar eupto 700mb in size, i don't mind ...
anyways before i download the mve files i would like to get the avi files as they are only 134mb.
where can i download all the cutscenes as avi files...
-
Their on Fractux's FTP server. There's a thread about it on this board called Get your Cutscenes Now (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php/topic,16542.0.html) which I thought might be noticable :D
