Today my computer started to act extremely weird and I began to suspect a virus. Sure enough I got a virus scan and sure enough...there it was, two copies of a Java Applet worm. Nasty stuff. I did get to delete it though.
Curse you hackers!
What I had: http://www.trendmicro.com/vinfo/virusencyclo/default5.asp?VName=JAVA_BYTVERIFY.A

A java virus.
Terrifying.
-
It happens to us all, well except me...:nervous:
What virus scan are you using?
-
If that's the MS Java VM vulnerability I'm thinking of then it was discovered and patched nearly two years ago now, do you understand the concept of Windows Update Hotfixes Virtu or are you one of those dumb ****s who are too scared to use it?
-
*would point out that the correct term is 'crackers' but doubts anyone would care or remember*
-
So? Too many hackers work for the NSA or large corporations for me for one to worry about insulting their name.
-
First off, impressive usage of insults Admiral LSD...I'm sure your mommy loves you for your skills.
Interestingly enough, I update my Windows at least every month, and yes, I know how terrifying it was...it annoyed the crap out of me for the two hours it took me to find it and finally delete it.....my keyboard was possesed.
@demon442: I use some online virus scan that my ISP recommends called HouseCall, it can be found at the same site I got that virus info from.
Anyway, this is a virus that was first noticed on May 24th of this year.

That's not what I meant, there is a group of people out there who won't touch stuff like Windows Update with a ten foot pole becuase they're under the mistaken impression they have some semblance of privacy on the internet and are afraid of letting even the tiniest bit of info leave their comps. These people are idiots and we'd be doing the gene pool a favour if we rounded them up and systematcially kill them all and their kids, if they've had any.
-
Gates is working on that.
-
And yet I can only wonder why people don't properly protect their systems from hackers, crackers, viruses, trojans, etc, etc.
There's many good free firewalls and anti-virus softwares out there. Some webpage based virus checker is hardly enough.
A good firewall is Sygate Personal Firewall (standard version) and a good anti-virus is avast! 4 Home Edition.
And I agree with Admiral LSD. People are just utterly paranoid about everything. Which is plain stupid. Little paranoia does not hurt as it will make you avoid possibly malicious sites and such, but when you find yourselves checking your pants for possible gps trackers, you've got a problem.

I have Zone Alarm but it just seems to mess up things so I barely ever use it.

I'm so pretty... oh so pretty...
*hic*
*passes out*

it's never given me any problems.
-
I use Zone Alarm Pro on my main computer and Zone Alarm on all the others. Haven't had any problem with it for ages (and the one problem I did have was fixed in an update about a week after I reported it).
What problems have you had with it?
-
Personally, I'm with nuclear1 on this issue.
-
I have a very pathetic system and I cant seem to afford to lose any more system resources than I already do with the games I play. Plus I'm 33.6 for crying out loud :)

Gah...
Well first off, 56K modems arent but $20 here in the US. Second, RAM isnt but $70 for a 256 DDR stick. Third, www.grisoft.com has a very good antivirus that works wonders if you keep it updated and dont do anything stupid.
-
DDR? My stupid PC used DIMM... *kicks it*
...and no. I don't know the difference other than the extra line in the DIMM. Dunno if I care either. lol
-
DDR SDRAM can handle data transfer on both the rising and falling edges of a clock pulse making it roughly twice as fast as regular SDRAM at any give bus frequency.

Let me see if I can remember the last time I had a virus... um...
oh that's right. On my personal system, I've never had anything more complex than win32.concept (oh, the memories). How do you lot keep getting viruses on your machines? Dodging viruses isn't that difficult.
-
*has never had a virus in his lifetime*
even though I don't use a virus scanner
why? Because:
I very rarely hand out my main email address
I don't use IE
I don't use Outlook
I am skeptical/careful
oh and the last one is: I don't use windows (though I used mainly windows and Mac OS for the first 13 or so years of my life so this doesn't really matter)
I think rather than cursing viruses you all need to lock up your compters and take precautions. (Same with keeping crackers away)
-
Kamikaze, I wonder how you know that you haven't had any viruses or trojans if you don't use virus scanner. :) It might very well be that you just haven't noticed any. Viruses are usually noticed but trojans may not be.
-
It is possible, but highly unlikely. I didn't notice any odd files, or behavior that would be virus induced. As far as I know there are very few web browser exploits for non-IE browsers, and there's nothing to make me believe any non-IE browser actually fetched a virus from somewhere. I also used a mail program that didn't (as far as I know) activate anything in a mail file unless told to (text only iirc). I've only opened an attachment one or three times in my life. I also usually do research on a piece of software before downloading and installing.
I also should indicate that I don't regularly use a virus scanner (don't have one installed right now) but I have scanned a few times in the past (I had one installed back when I ran windows, though it was just sitting in disuse), and never found a virus (yeah, it wasn't frequent enough to be 100% sure).
Right now I'm sure I don't have a virus as I'm running linux (being rather careful about security), a virus scanner probably won't be needed.
-
You do as you like. :) But it is always better be safe than sorry.
-
Put up a good firewall and never run suspect exe files and you really don't have much to worry about.
That said it is better to have a virus checker running.
