I've known about Starshatter for some time, but I've always written it off as a crappy freeware engine, not really up to date graphically and such.
Well, like Vegastrike, a very talented and dediated group of modders has decided to prove me wrong. Feast your eyes on the capabilities of the Starshatter engine. The specific mod that has really shown what the engine is capable of is a Babylon 5 mod called Hold the Line, avalable here (http://mods.firstones.com/holdtheline/index.html)
here are some screenshots..

As you can see, this engine is quite capable of dishing out some major ass kicking. I know there is/was a Freespace 2 intended for the Starshatter engine, if someone has the link handy.
Perhaps this is the vessel for moving the Freespace universe into a new age?

Very, very nice indeed.
-
Agreed
-
what I wanna know is how well that runs with 20 fighters and 5 capships on screen at the same time :p
but yeah, take the first pic, make the same scene in FS2, and you have some ugly pixelised bunch of polys because of the clipping, so it's already nice :)
-
It's nice, but Babylon 5: I've Found Her (http://ifh.firstones.com/) has still better graphics.
And what the hell is that ship in the last screenshot? It's not a canon B5 ship at very least.
-
i'm not much of a B5 nut.. but offhand i'd say that ship is narn in design.. (don't hold me to that..)
-
Yes it is of Narn design but that model must be fan-made.
-
Yes, its Narn. I can't recall the name of the ship, but I think that its part of the "expanded cannon" shiplist based on the Agents of Gaming miniatures designs. There is a variety of ships which are generally included in mod projects, which are assumed to be as good a cannon.
As far as IFH having better graphics, well its really a close call. They both have some amazing stuff to show, as does the Buda 5 mod for Independence War 2.
So what do you guys think about the possiblity for Starshatter being used to create a new generation of FReespace game, beyond the scope of any mod or any campaign. LIke a complete overhaul
-
what I think is that nobody care much about it here, so no.
-
I think FS Open has more interest, right now... it just doesn't seem appealing to start from such a ground level and make it FreeSpace, rather than start with FreeSpace and build from there. This may turn out to be the wrong way to go about it, but I don't think you can stop the people who want to continue it for now.
