For the purposes of making CBanis I've made my own custom 3D nodemap in 3DS Max. It's a WIP, but I'm pretty happy with it, and rendering CBanis is a snap. I still have to reposition some things so the lines don't cross the text. The only problem is doing that nifty halo hilighting.
I have FS1-style graphics avaliable, as well, so I can cook up an FS1 nodemap too. Give me some time, and I'll be able to make 3D animated node CBanis for the campaigns I'm signed up for. ;7

oooooooooooooh!!
ahhhhhhhhhhhhh!!

Excellent. I made a few primative stabs at this myself but you seem to have gotten a lot further. The Halo lighting was bugging me too :)
Is this going to be released so we can all use it?
-
Most impressive, looks very Volition like. Can't wait to see some CBanis done with it.

Do the labeling of the Planets via VideoPost, composite image files with the names on top of the video depending on ObjectIDs that should eliminate your crossing text problem. For the highlighting I'd suggest using selfillumination with a falloff map on a second sphere around the planets, you could use glow effects as well but that would be only unnecessarily more complicated.

Can't glue a light to the camera?
-
:eek2:
You do this stuff in 3D!? Use friggin PS or PSP :p
Well, thats if you didn't want ani's....
-
Big thumbs up.
-
Oh how do I wish I could do that.
-
It's a good one. You have proven yourself valuable again enough well so we could call you 'Emperor' :)
Apart from homour:
I see what all nodemaps posses:
1. The grid behind the systems.
2. Different color for collapsed jump nodes.
3. Nebula background.
-
Cool!
Can you write a tutorial or just release the files so we can figure out how you did it?
*can wait to get home to finish the SSani tut and then start on CBani's*
-
hey emperor. can i use this image alone as a map for my campaign? its the hottest, most up to date map in existance, and its only a wip ;).... can i?
-
That ain't a nodemap. THIS (http://www.nodewar.com/map/nodemap.jpg) is a nodemap.
:thepimp:
-
That IS a nodemap, you can see which jump nodes lead where and from where.
-
Captain Obvious scores yet another kill. :blah:

How do you mean that?[/b]

Re-ee-eallllly...
:D
-
do you do requests?:nervous:
-
Of course I do, Thor. But soon I'll release the MAX file, and a 3DS for those less fortunate, so your own staff can take a crack at it. CBanis are going well, but I'm having 256 color woes.
This is another iteration, this time with a little specular glossiness and a higher resolution. I'm putting it through one last phase since I noticed the Regulus-Polaris node path cuts too near Vasuda, and I'm also going to move the binary system off the map, since it was never 'officially' explored.
-
 SWEET! nice map

I'll keep my point that THAT is a nodemap, everything is depending on your point of view.
-
I've been meaning to do that for a looong time now, but there was always something more important. Very good job, I'd really like to get my hands on that file to tweak it a bit.
:D

If you're really confused, you should be enlightened. The original post...

was a figure of speech. It basically says: "If you think that nodemap is good, wait until you see mine - it's several times better."
-
Ugh specular to high. Turn the node map (green with black grid) to effects channel 1 and give it a nice glow.
-
it's good, but it doesn't look QUITE kosher , and it's a little hard to understand. But very pretty :D

Uh. No.
That IS a nodemap, because we use it to see where the nodes go and who owns what in NW. A kind of map of all the nodes. Strange and difficult to grasp, I know. But trust me, it's true.
-
Why doesn't anyone blow off in wonder when I do these kinds of things. I've even shown you some CBAnis I made, haven't I?
Oh well, life is unfair.
As for GE:
1) Use a bigger sphere for the grid.
2) make the grid lines thicker and more close together
3) Use purple nebula
4) Make the nodes and names glow
This is coming from a dude who has made an animatable nodemap himself, so feel free to take this with a grain of salt.

Hey, nice work there too, looking good. I think I've missed the original thread where you posted it.
-
probably, because I remembered that I posted it in DatDB internal:p
-
That does explain it. I only started making my own node map in TS cause I had never seen one before.

Whoa... very, very nice. :)
-
Ya, that animation was awesome.
-
you have been playing MAFIA because of that name lost heaven nebula:D
-
NodeWar has used the Lost Heaven Nebula for a loong time. Way before Mafia IIRC. Which leads me to think it's *real* or just a community hand-me-down.
-
well, you can just blame Su-Tehp. Tis for his campaign

1. and 2. I'll see what I can do. I'll increase the sphere sizes, wire density, and thickness.
3.) Why? These colors are about the same as the ones used in the FS2 cbs.
4.) I don't know how to do any special effects in Max yet--including glowing, making boxes and things appear out of nowhere, animating text, any of that stuff. If I can get that glowing done, that would be a huge help in making CB anis.
-
GE, Stu's nodemap was the one I mentioned on ICQ - notice how the viewpoint shifts in-between systems and stuff, but the system names are always facing the camera. :)
But your (static :( ) map looks more V-ish! ;)
-
Here it is, the final iteration. (Damn, I forgot to sign it.)
All these systems are yours, except Lupus. Attempt no landings there. Use them together, use them in peace.
