Title: How do you make shields in TrueSpace?
Post by: Taristin on August 03, 2003, 09:23:43 pm
Do I model a sphere around the ship, and call it "shield"?

What do I have to do?

I'd use blender for that because of it's much better verticle editing-mode-thing :nervous:

Anyway. Just out line the ship from the top, side, and front and just edit a new mesh from there. This way may be more work but you get a much better looking shield mesh.

make whatever shape you want, triangulate, call it shield
don't apply textures/uvmaps

If you're felling Adventurous, copy your model, use segeltuch to autogenerate some shields, then import that shield data from the copy into the original Via Modelview. Cut that felon TS out of the loop entirely.

Cut the Felon out and replace it with a mad axe murdering psychopath. :D Sugeltuch is far worse than TS.

Open your model that needs a shield. Edit pof button, shields, import shield data. open model that has shield shape you want to use. Edit size of shields till ship is encapsulated to desired effect. Save pof. Ship is now protected... Enjoy!

(Sorry guys couldn't resist posting the low tech (non-skill) version. It's the only way I can do it :p ) L8tr!

Since you guys have to open truespace anyway to do hierchy, I really can't see why you are looking for the more complicated ways
just add a primitive, scale and triangulate it, what's the prob?

All you have to do is to make a sphere primitive, move some vertices and/or edges to shape the sphere into the shield mesh you want, and you'll be set.

Yeah, I did it and it works. Thanks for help all. Now I have to figure out what happened to the thruster plumes that I used to have in game that suddenly dissapeared...

when i make curvy shields to make it sort of "encapsulated to desired effect" it becomes perfectly round again when i import it into POFCS

I make them by creating a sphere in TS and deforming it

Thats because of how TS saves deformities.. You have to then delete the deformity by clicking one of the other buttons, but I'm not sure which one it is...

That should save the shape, but delete the stupid part that makes it round again
