Title: Just killed my PSU.
Post by: Petrarch of the VBB on August 04, 2003, 12:07:22 pm
Says it all really. I’ve just killed my power supply.
I fitted the new Radeon, got all the drivers installed. Lovely. Got everything running, and decided to run 3DMark. I went for a drink while it ran the test, then I came back to find the machine had turned itself off. Unperturbed, I tried to turn it back on, only to be met with a flash and a bang. As you can imagine, I am quite annoyed.
I shall be going into town tomorrow to buy a new, higher wattage one, but before I do, can anyone tell me if it might have taken anything else with it?

Hmmmmmmmmm.... with any luck it hasn't, PSU's have built in safety features to prevent it, however, you will probably not know for certain until you put the new power supply in. While you are putting in the supply, check for scalding or burn marks on the Motherboard, for physical damage.
I think your PSU couldn't handle the extra current drawn by the GeForce, so it was probably on the verge of going pop anyway, if that makes you feel any better :S
Also, is the monitor connected directly to the PSU or does it plug in seperately? If it's connected to the PSU, it increases the risk of damage a bit :(
I'll keep my fingers crossed for you Petrarch.

if his power supply had built in "safety features" then it wouldn't have fried itself if the computer was drawing too much current, it would've just shut down or something.

you should be OK.  let us know though

I turned it back on when I came back, as I thought that perhaps I'd knocked the power button when I left. That was when it blew.

Flipside, the monitor has its own plug.

Yuck... that sucks... what a letdown after getting the new card!

You're probably ok, depending on the wattage of the PSU you are using. Sounds like its low enough to not cause a bad surge.

Best wishes...

Thanks for the support, during these difficult times.:)

One thing is for sure, I will at least know the problem when I get a new PSU tomorrow. I think a 400w minimum is in order.

Or a VERY good 330-350W one.  Typically 300W of the average brand of PSU isn't stable enough for the latest Radeon cards (or the FX's either).  But the top of the line ones tend to be alot more stable even if their total wattage isn't higher than 330W (like my Antec one - there are others better than mine as well - do a search).

That power supply could have been faulty... perhaps you should try to return it to your reseller before buying a new one.

If only I had the money. :(

Also, I've realised I don't have many new games, except for Mafia, and C&C Generals.

Funny, this is exactly what happened to my brother's computer when he upgraded from a P3-800/256Mb/GF3ti200 to an Athlon XP 2600+/1Gb/Raedon 8500. He started downloading quicktime and it shut down. replacing the power supply fixed things, though. :)
