Title: realistic lighting

would it be too hard to make it so only the part of the ship facing the sun is illuminated? it would be both more realistic, and very cool looking. it would also show off bob's glowmaps better.

1st rule of CG lighting: everything looks cool with one bright light source.

actually all you need is to reduce ambient lighting.  We did this in casualties of war.  Check aldo's signature for it.    It is basically jucst a black square that you put in the the exact same place as the sun in a mission.  It darkens things up on the "night" side of the items in question.

but that only works in user made missions.

Actually, everything looks cool with three lights, one brighter than the other two, and the secondary pair providing edge detail and fill. :)

Your point, however, is valid. Good lighting would just rock.

Well, if SCP get T&L going, you should see enough rock to keep a geologist in raptures for weeks ;)
