Title: Playing Cutscene MVE files from hard drive
Post by: john_smith_beer on August 05, 2003, 07:52:13 pm
Hi all.

Got an interesting problem here.  I've got the FS2 cds and have done a full install.   Does anyone know how I can get the cutscenes to play (in game) from the hard-drive?  The reason I'm asking is that I've managed to no-CD the game and  would like to be able to see them it without having to keep the cds in the machine.

I am aware that I could i use FS2_open and download the avi files, but this seems a shame as I have the better quality MVE files around.  (HD space isn't an issue here.)

Any thoughts?

considering the MVE codec is probably one of the worst around, you may be better off using the smaller avi files

What if you just copy the MVE files into the main fs2 directory, will they play then? I'm just wondering because in the HOTU download the included MVE files are in the main fs2 directory.

I couldn't tell you since I have the HOTU downoad, not an original version.

Just a thought.

Cheers!

Copy all the cutscenes to data\movies.

Thanks for the suggestions.  I've tried this copying the MVE files to data/movies and the main FS2 directory, but no joy.  I assume  that I need to change some table that tells FS2 where to play the movies from, but thats as far as I can get.   Can anyone take this idea further?

Seeya,

That should have worked. This may be an issue with the No CD crack you used. The Cutscene.tbl doesn't specify the location of the movies beyond saying which CD the movie is on so it probably won't have any effect if you edit that.

Go to the FTP server thread on this forum and get hold of the orginal uncracked exe and then try running FS2 with that. You'll probably notice that the movies are playing off your HD instead of the CD which points to the problem being with the crack.

Thanks for the info.  This does seems to be the problem - the original version plays the movies off the HD while the no-CD one doesn't.

Looks like I'll have to download the avi files and FS2_open unless someone has any other suggestions.  Come to think of it does anyone know a decent freeware MVE to AVI converter, as this could be a lot faster than trying to download the avi files?

MVE2AVI is the name of one.

It's illegal to link to it but let's say that it's really easy to find on google.

Karajorma,

Thanks for the info.  Do you think it might be worth mentioning this info in the FAQ as I can't be the first person to come across this issue?  (Apologies if its already there and I missed it.)

Thanks again

I'd mention how to find it but then everyone would be asking me how to convert the files from the upto 4 Gigabyte avi files it creates. And since I don't actually know that much about converting and work in a pretty much monkey pressing button fashion It would end up as a huge exercise in the blind leading the Blind. :)
