Title: Sundiving
Post by: Thorn on August 07, 2003, 05:56:49 pm
Felt like doing something with my sun in it.
Nothing too complex, since it takes bloody ages to render this thing close up...

Nicely done. Is it in any way inspired by either the sundiving stuntship in HHGTG or the time-travel attempt in ST IV?

It's got a White Star in it,  that I always like.

Plus it's got a dam cool sun.

Nice, only 1 prob... The sun appears to be slightly angular :p

Very pretty. :) Still think the star ought to be more glowy, but can't argue with that render quality.

Image composition is good but the chromosphere is too opaque.

REmove the text, and you got yourself a cool desktop. :D

Get me on ICQ and you can have a textless  one :p
Yeah, the sun is angular now that you mention it.... I've never rendered it this close, so it didnt show up before...
Turning up the smoothing should fix that...

Ehh, I think I'll keep my 2 FTO's... but thanks for the offer. ;)

Actually, from what I've been able to tell, smoothing doesn't help angles that you see at the edges of meshes, it only prevents the sharp breaks in shading across a surface of a mesh.

That is correct. :D
If you want to fix angularity use meshsmooth.

Bah.. meshsmooth sucks...makes things look like putty.... which is probably why Lightwave doesnt have it...

Stupid lightwave... anyway can you adjust the number of segments in the sphere like you can in MAX?

Yes... though to do that I would have to rework the particle effect. Which I dont want to do.. that was the hardest part.. The emitter is based on the objects verticies...

Thorn, have you tried using Subdivide/Metaform in modeller, that will probably round off the star a bit more, though it pushes the poly count up a fair bit :)

Flipside :D

You're right.. I keep thinking I have to freeze the mesh after I subdivide it... (exporting to other formats)
Layout can set the subpatch detail....
