I havent played this in a while, but I thought I remembered being able to control your ship (flying it) with the keyboard, and being able to aim your weapons with the mouse (they were independent of each other, more specifically you didnt have to have your ship pointed directly at your target) is this possible?
I was almost sure i was able to do this, maybe it was with a joystick instead...
I used to be a member at the vbb boards a long time ago, but I left for awhile and then the boards disappeared. Some of the names here seem familiar. Seems so long ago...
BTW thanks for any help..

Er... perhaps you're thinking of another game? Your guns will always fire forwards. It's the law.

I hope I didnt explain myself right, but now I'm thinking you are right...but check this...

In this screen shot my ship is not actually facing the bogey, is there a way that I can use the mouse to aim and fire a laser type weapon at the bogey, with out shifting the direction of the entire ship. ie flying and targeting are independant.
Gah now that I think about it more...I'm thinking that it wasn't, any suggestions for the easiest control? I dont have a joystick, but do use mouse/keyboard. Thanks

You're thinking of Freelancer, dude :p
-
Plenty of folk around here use keyboards to play FS2

*Fire Control, target PPV_Jimmy. Warm up the beam. And... FIRE!*

Exits are to the sides and rear. Personal flamethrowers are located beneath your seat in case of emergency or naughty disposition. If you run into any Shivans while crawling through the ductwork, it's probably just Carl. Give him your lunch, back away slowly, and you'll be fine.
Oh, and non-turreted guns always fire straight forwards.

Thanks for the welcome ( I think :eek2: )
Since someone mentioned Freelancer, I did play the demo version but didnt find it to be all that entertaining, can anyone give a review of the full version?
[Edit] Hahaha! I thought of more questions fiends! How long has the vbb boards been down for? Has anything been done about ending the story? Back when I visited the VBB forums newbies got crushed if they asked about a FS3, but has any users gone and tried to make a campaign to finish the story? Thanks

It's very bad. Definately not as good as FS2
Every single random mission is to blow up some random guy. I heard the multiplayer was good, but it got tedious and repetetive eventually.
EDIT: BTW, everyone gets that welcome ;)

except the guys that joined before that was made up.
the vbb has been gone for, errr... a year or more, I think. but then, I'm not really good at telling how much time has elapsed since something particular happened.
there are a couple of campaigns about what happened after capella, like Inferno (which you should download and play immediately, since it's really good). I don't have that much insight into all the campaigns, tho.

Are there any other space sims that come close ?

There's a new one comming out, made by a Russian team, which basically handles exactly like FS2 but looks miles better. Can't remember the name though, but there is a demo floating about somewhere.

homeplanet or something, I think.
I should prolly try out the demo.

I thought at first you were joking around and meant Homeworld ( I believe they are releasing Homeworld 2 soon, although I have never played the games...)
Here is a link to some info about it:

Download (I used the second link)

no, you'd have to turn your "ship" toward him and fire

I downloaded and finished the Inferno missions, but when I go back to the original FS2 campaigns the game crashes with a lot of errors. Well actually it never crashed out, it would bring me to windows complaining of cpp errors, mostly due to Ship types. As I entered the first mission (in the FS2 campaign), my ship type was that of the first ship (vesuvius?) you get in the Inferno series. I had no weapons, and none of the escort ships were there. Any suggestions?
Edit: I moved the inferno files out of the directory, but the main freespace 2 campaign is still messed up, is there away that I can have both campaigns, and switch back and forth? Right now my FRED2 has all the inferno ships as well, and I would like to be able to just use the ones that came with Freespace 2 originally.

You haven't removed all the inferno files. Take a look at the technical part of my FAQ. Have a look at the list of allowed .vp files. Remove the extra ones.

If you don't have a joystick, try the mouse. You have to enable the mouse in the "options" and if you want to un-invert it (up is up, down is down) then go to Controls>Ship and click the "Y axis" and click invert
I've been playing with a mouse lately, and its still precise, though you have to crank up the sensitivity
