Title: I made a mistake a long time ago
Post by: Eidolon on August 10, 2003, 03:47:42 pm
A few years ago I traded in Freespace to a local computer store--big mistake, I can imagine some of you sneering at me. (I probably even spent the credit on a trashy game, too!)

But, now I have grown up and I realize my sins. It bothers me now, because I have just finished reading Ender's Game (excellent novel for those of you who haven't read it) and want to play a space simulation. So, I go on to a few trusted websites who rate games by genre, and from what I saw there was nothing there that interested me. Then I remembered FS2 and looked it up on Amazon only to find greedy bastards selling it for 50+ dollars--not, of course, that the game isn't worth that to me, but I am poor, and have reason to believe that there are easier (and for that matter, more reliable) methods of "purchase".

So until either Interplay comes out of the aura of stupidity, or some other inspired company decides to pick up where they left off, I think I will get back into FreeSpace--only there's the catch, and I am sure you all know what it is.

Where the hell do I get this game?!?!?!?!

Is it as good as Xenocide? I wanted to read the other novels Card wrote, but I started with the last in the story, which was stupid...

Edit: Reading the last first was stupid... the book was awesome.

Templar The Underdog's link is only 214 MB, and I recall the game coming with 3 CD's--missing files? Which do I need and where can they be found?

Raa Tor'h  I've not read Xenocide yet. In fact, this is my first Orson Scott Card book (definately not my last) and it ranks up there with Dune on my all-time favorites.

You're looking at me? I was just uh.. wondering where you got your name.. that's all.

As for the file sizes, I think it's because they don't come with the movies.. but you can find those somewhere else.. In somebodies siggy (Karajorma I think).

Speaker for the Dead is better. Children of the Mind is actually the last book in the series but OSC is now going back and writing books about Bean and Peter Wiggin.

As for the HotU version of FS2 you can turn it into a full FS2 install by following the advice in my FAQ (look below for the link)

I am wondering: Would anyone mind mailing me a burned copy of the original? I could PayPal you the mailing/burning expenses if you wish.

Email me at [email protected] if you'd like to help out--I would REALLY appreciate it!!!

Which book can I read to find out more about the pequininos (piggies ;))?

I'd reccomend that you read Enders Game first so that you know all about the Buggers before you move on to Speaker for the Dead where the pequininos are first mentioned. Children of the Mind pretty much concludes the Ender arc of the story.

The Shadow series follows Bean and Peter so I'd leave them until you've finished reading the part of the story that covers Ender's arc. I like the Shadow series but it's nowhere near as good as Ender's Game or Speaker (that said I haven't read the third book in the Shadow series yet).

I liked Ender's Game the best, followed by speaker for the dead. But the last couple were....not as good, to say the least.

HOTU has (suposedly) only the minimum files needed to run the game, none of the moveings and (to the best of my knowledge) none of the highres art (most of wich is never actualy used  )
the movies are being converted to Divx now (if they arn't done yet) and the SCP build should alow you to play them.

I've read Ender's Shadow, the one about Bean, and loved it.  I really should get Ender's Game though.

demon, I recommend reading it to your favorite film score--Card's style flows perfectly with the music I was listening to!!! Try it out--I felt like I was watching a movie.

Blackwolf:  where does that come from.

you know what?  i'm just so sick of people always trying to find FS2 and not being able to.  i'm just going to upload all three FS2 CDs and make them available.

Yup, clearly better than Xenocide. Somewhat better than Enders Game, too (this is more a matter of personal taste, though).

The Underdogs version is deeply flawed which means that we have do the work around using Fractux's FTP.
