I normally use Kazans PCS for conversion, but I think cob2fs2 has the same stats for converting as modelview has for displaying........ anyway, I got this error message converting lod0;
Error: UVcount > VEC_MAX*2
Not sure what it is from, but I think it may be because I'v epretty much use dan individual UV map for every single face on the ship - about 1800 polys (824 main hull, 60 turrets and 2 radar dishes).
any thoughts?

Try the same mesh with only a few texture maps . If it works you need to cut down the number of texture maps.
If you get the same error it's not the number of texture maps that is the problem.

Works fine with PCS.... i'm assuming it's some sort of pof2cob limitation.
Is there the pof2cob source code available atall?
