Title: my first try
Post by: comICEMAN on August 14, 2003, 02:29:44 pm
I want to model for Freespace2, so i decided to make a ship, so here is it:(http://acc45.trinity.controlserver.net/icedflames/DigitalArena-sachen/15min-erstes-mal-modelt.jpg)  its the first time i ever used 3ds MAX and i havent read any tutorial. But now i want to test if it works, so i read i should make a cob file. Ok that i've done. Now i should open it in Treuspace3 make groups (1. the turret 2. the fighter) but i dont know how! can someone help me? should be good when i got help what to do after that too!

You'll get the hang of it pretty soon.  Not bad for your first try, knowing that you used primitives to create the mesh.

Actually for a first effort it isn't that bad. It would need a lot of work before it would be a good model but I'm sure you learned a lot while working on it so your next model will probably be 100 times better.

As for pofing it for Freespace you should definately give it a try. Again you'll learn a lot trying it.
The tutorials I link to in my FAQ are based more around what you're trying to do now (i.e turn a model into a mod) rather than building it from scratch.

I'd recommend taking a good look through my turreting tutorial (:thepimp: ) Just replace the GTC Great Big Cube with your own model and work you way through it. You should come out with a fully turreted bomber (fighters can't have turrets IIRC).

To make it actually work in FS you'll probably have to reduce the polycount, because those barrels and the turret look pretty round. Furthermore you might want to check for intersecting polygons.

Add some flames and you have a Hotrod shivan!

Did you texture it with 3d max, or you could use that damned LithUnWrap?

It somehow looks like a miniature submarine to me.

Yes, it is a Shivan submarine when it is fighting in SUBspace as a MARINE. :ha:

Too round to be a Shivan vessel. Do something different with those engines, Shivan engines are typically inside the hull, not bolted on like a Terran's ship.
