Can someone tell me why this is?
Every time I try and play Homeworld these days, I can't get past the 2nd mission, as I can't kill the Turanic carrier that destroyed the Khar-Selim.
What am I doing wrong?
The first time I played the game, it was a breeze...
-
You don't kill the carrier, it escapes.
-
Oh yes, and one other hint, don't build too many ships, the less ships you have, the less enemies appear on that and the next level ;)

I thought if it escaped the mission was failed?
Odd.

That's a couple of missions later, you are attacked by the carrier, return, capture the Frigate, head out again, Meet the Bentusi, get the Ion Frigate and THEN you have to destroy the Carrier :)

It really has been a long time, then.
But still, I have to at least damage the bugger, for it to escape, yes?
my fighters and corvettes get 0wned by those quick-firing guns on it.
-
No need. Just kill what's attacking the mothership and it leaves eventually.
-
While we're on the topic, could someone point me at a good Homeworld walkthrough.
-
I've GOT a good walkthrough, but I can't remember what page I copied it from.
Try looking here: Homeworld Universe (http://dynamic2.gamespy.com/~homeworld/)

Petrarch you noob. Anyway, yeah, do what they say. Kill the fighters and vettes, but ignore the carrier. In Mission 4, build a lot of interceptors and heavy vettes, then rip that carrier apart.
-
As soon as I got frigates, I never built fighters or corvettes again. Unless a mission goal required so.
Really, you save a lot of resources if you concentrate on capital ships and keep those alive by using support frigate's repair capability.
Fighters and corvettes are a waste of resources IMO...
Some day I need to try how well an armada of ion cannon frigates does against fighters and corvettes alone. (In single player)
-
What's the best (only?) SW TC for HW?
-
I used to know of a very good one, but they kept chaning everything, so I lost interest.
SWFA, I believe it was called.
And whatever happened to the Freespace TC? SVG, was it?

You arrive with 30-45 ICFs. I arrive with 80 interceptors in an aggressive wall, and 20-30 heavies in a wall. You won't have a single ICF after two minutes :p

That is why there's 6 missile destroyers.
But in any case, multiplayer is different from single player. People can think and change their strategies accordingly, but in single player it is the same all time.

Not at all. There are dozens of different ways to play, strike-craft-only, corvette-only, caps-only, salvage-all, kill-all (my fav :D)... the list goes on.
-
I find the best strategy is to have a good mix of strike craft and capships...
A wing of attack bombers covered by a group of scouts on evaisive will make short work of a missile destroyer...
The scouts distract the destroyer...
-
Original homeworld encouraged that, as unit capping allowed you to max out on one type of ship and still have plenty more ships that you could build. The cataclysm "support" system (which I understand HW2 uses :doubt: ) is the one that forces you to adopt an all-one-type strategy, as you could not get enough ships from several classes to be useful.

 But then again, make one huge wall of 80 aggresy inties, there shouldn't be a missile destroyer after a second or two. Same goes for nearly everything larger than a corvette. ;)
-
Have you tried capturing the carrier? By the end of the game, I ended up with two Turanic carriers.
-
Odd. Homeworld nor cataclysm allows you to salvage mothership classed vessels (classed in the ships file that is) and the Turanic Carrier is a mothership classed vessel. My only guess either you modded the game or I'm missing something here.

When dealing with Strike Craft, Assault Frigates are your friends :)

Multigun Corvettes work better than Assaults :D

Mwhahaha!

I'm now on the mission with the 3 Kadeshi Motherships, sending swarms after me.
Wish me luck.:)
And also, about the unit-capping/support units thing. I prefer the Cataclysm system, as although it does tend to force you to use an all-one-class fleet, this is not necescarily a bad thing. I tend to use Acolytes, and nothing else.
That's why I get utterly thrashed in Cata MP games, damned EMP...
-
My strategy, regardless in HW or HW:C, is always: capture, capture, CAPTURE!
I would construct tons of salvage corvettes and go after Kadeshi multi-beam frigates. In that mission specifically, I would suggest sending a destroyer group to one of the nearest motherships and vaporize it. Don't bother with drone frigates if you're Somtaaw, but do get some defense-field frigates if you're Taiidan. Order several support vessels to repair your mothership and and another to repair your group of destroyers. In that mission, multitasking is king!

I like most of that game, except for the Supernova Station....
goddamn dust veins are too small

Homeworld : Too few resources
Cataclysm : Too many resources.
I hope they get it right for Homeworld 2.
