How much further has FRED been developed in recent months?
I've run into a problem with FRED Open with some BWO missions. We've switched to FS Open support (BWO looks STUNNING with specular lighting enabled) but we're getting errors like "Ship/AI references corrupt" on otherwise good working missions. I doubt ShadowWolf or myself would like to rebuild entire missions that were already nearly finished but thats starting to become a problem. I'd say one in seven missions are having the problem...no identifiable reason why at the moment.
Before I submit a bug, I would like to mention that we're using a slightly older build of FRED Open (3.3 I think it is) and we're just not sure of the newest versions...if they are stable, workable, causing us less errors?

YES.
The newer builds are far more stable than that old crap. I recommend the INF build from Phreak's sig, which can allow ship table sizes of up to 200 ships.

FRED is so obfuscated with MFC that nobody dares change it unless they really have a good reason and they know what they're doing. Hence, FRED2_OPEN is much less prone to bugs than FS2_OPEN. I highly recommend using the same version of FRED as FS2. Hence, 3.3 for 3.3, 3.5 for 3.5.
Hopefully FRED 3.5 won't give you any problems. Of course, missions saved with FRED 3.5 will no longer be playable on FS2 before 3.5.
-
Well, since Fred 2 of all flavors crashes, I'm stuck.
-
Er... the FRED that came with 3.5 says 2.4 in the About box. This is small but most unhelpful fact in the quest to locate a stable build. Speaking of which, would it be possible for you guys to put an obvious note in your builds (like 3.51-shine in the main hall version info for example)?
-
FRED 3.5 crashes completely no matter what MOD or tables its used with.
-
Ice, try the one found Here (http://swooh.com/peon/phreak/fs2_open_r.zip), that's phreak's latest build and has proved very stable for me regardless of what mods I have installed (mainly, been playing with Inferno and fredding some for TI using it). I *have* crashed it on a few occasions (too many events in a mission doesn't count, had one where I killed the thing 10+ times because of that until I culled the number a bit ;)), but it's rare enough that it hasn't bothered me much - just need to make a habit of saving after any time consuming change to a mission.
-
That is fascinating since that one crashes the most of all of them for me. At the moment, any FRED work is on hold till I figure this out.
It crashes regardless of a MOD or base FS2 being present. There must be something else getting in the way....
-
I've tried pretty much everything...that version of FRED crashes on start...even using default FS2 data. It hard locks and Windows tells me the program has crashed. No error log by the looks of it.
Does anyone else have a good suggestion for the ship/ai error when I open a mission using other versions of FRED. This has seriously hindered BWO development.

Hrrmm...Fred 3.5.3 Unofficial fixed the problems. Yay!
