Title: Vasudan thing - my very first model
Post by: TopAce on August 19, 2003, 05:36:11 pm
(http://swooh.com/peon/TopAce/VasThing.jpg)

I was browsing through my .cob files and I found this one. My very first attempt at the 'how safe it is to union two triangulated objects together'. From the times when I started modelling.

Feel free to insert critism, I don't expect you like this one, I only show it to you to have fun around these serious topics. :)

Are you sure the Vasudans would necessarily adopt the torus configuration with a spherical central hub seen in so many sci-fi movies. Don't try to humanize an alien race too much.

Well, I really hate to say something unpleasant to anyone who has taken the time and effort to create a model, but it does look somewhat like the outcome of an unfortunate late night encounter between a doughnut and a pingpong ball :(

That said, I created something similar once, if you ever decide to continue along the idea, I'd recommend making the diameter of the Turus smaller, and adding more texture detail to the centre. The toroid shape DOES have a use, the spinning can create gravity (If you look on the Hallfight scene, you'll notice that at least Shivans have not developed artificial gravity).

Whos to say they wouldnt?
Maybe they had the same problems creating artificial gravity...
The idea of a centrifuge (sp?) is simple physics... anyone can figure it out and use it..
take a bucket, put something in it (water works), grab the bucket and spin around in a circle.. notice how the water stays in? Oooohhh... ahhhhh....
Dont you think they might have done something similar?

But it doesn't have to be a classic toroid with a spherical hub. The Vasudans could add their own flourishes to it.

Looks more or less like a simplyfied, full Karnak to me.

I think it's just a really big giant donut.
See when the Vasudan's get hungry or need immediate food supplies, THEY BRING IN THE VPF DONUT!

I never told I want to continue this model, read my first post carefully, this is only a test model, not a real one. :)

LOL I never said you were going to continue with the idea, I said if you ever decide to do so, not that you were going to do so :)

I usually make 3 or 4 test models before I start on the 'real' thing, just to get a feel of what the final model is going to look like. As I said in my post, I'm dislike saying derogatory things about anyone who has taken the time and trouble to create a model, even a test one.

All I'm saying I guess is don't throw anything out because it doesn't look right first time round, if you don't like it, then fine, I certainly don't have the right to tell you what to make and what not to :)

All clear. This is the 'final' model.

Like maybe antenna's or make a groove in the out section of the torus, stuff like that.

Nope, I don't want to do any updates on it.

It's not as poor as my own GTC Great Big Cube (http://homepage.ntlworld.com/karajorma/freespace/shipmods.html) though :)

 Both karajorma's big cube and my Vasudan thing are unserious. You won't see any of them in-game while playing a mod :)

But kara's model has the use of learning turreting.

I'm still regretting asking Dark to make the Karnak, when I should have just asked him to make something unique and Vasudan with the reactor core rather then what the installation was loosely based on. :doubt: Hindsight is 20/20 though...
