Title: search engines
Post by: Hippo on August 20, 2003, 09:30:50 am
How would i go about getting the AHTW page on a search engine, such as google? Im pretty sure it would involve meta tags, but since I use frontpage to build websites and then use it to convert to HTML, i am very unfamiliar with it. The meta tags are currently as follows;
Code: [Select]
[head>
[meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; charset=windows-1252">
[title>All Hands To War
[meta name="GENERATOR" content="Microsoft FrontPage 5.0">
[meta name="ProgId" content="FrontPage.Editor.Document">
[meta name="Microsoft Theme" content="none, default">
[meta name="Microsoft Border" content="tb, default">
[/head>

As i say, i don't even know if Meta tags are exactly what i need...

Any help?

EDIT; I had to delete all the < things, else the meta stuff wouldn't show up... I used [ instead

a few months ago i still thought Meta tags were used by search engines (they used to be) but according to Sandwich (and i did some personal research on this too) and now the search engine bots don't look at meta tags, they look at page content.  it's actually been this way for a while, i just hadn't been keeping up to date :)

However, meta tags still do help people find your page.  the two most common (especially used to be when search bots looked primarily at meta tags) were (are):

{meta type="description" content="write description here"}
{meta type="keywords" content="put keywords here"}

EDIT:  and i didn't even answer your question yet ;)

To get your page to show up in search engines, as far as i know, you just have to include the information on the page in text format (nope, bots don't read graphics ;) ).  the more of the text you put, the more it shows up... so for instance if you wanted it to show up when people type:

HARD LIGHT PRODUCTIONS

you'd be sure to put "Hard" "Light" "Productions" preferably one word after another.  the more times you put it, the bigger chance it shows up.  some people take advantage by putting what they want to be searched for like 100 times in different font COLORS and SIZES.  this helps a lot too :)
