Title: Using Downloaded Mods
Post by: magatsu1 on August 21, 2003, 03:14:28 pm
Hi all,
Have been playing around with the ship models but have been having trouble. I'm 99% sure i'm not putting the files into the right places within the Freespace2 directories.
Is the data/tables/ships file acessable without any jiggery-pokery ?
and is ther any general rule of thumbs which I can follow when inserting downloaded files ?
                 Cheers.

Give more details, have you received a .vp file, or many extracted standalone(but working together ones like tbls, pofs, etc?

A vp file you want to use must be the first in the naming queue of all vps, so give the 01*.vp naming for it.

If you did download a ship, you must put it into the models directory, and give it a table entry.

I'm kinda new to this so i'll have a go...
the trouble does seem to be with stand alone ship models. (as apposed to packs)
putting in tbls and pofs is easy enough if the readme gives specific instructions.
I'll play around and see if i can be more specific.

Okay. Time for the obligatory pimp of the FAQ :) Check my sig magatsu1. The Directory section has a whole bit on what files go where which should be of some help. You may find the rest pretty useful too.

Excellent sig karajorma. I now realise how little I actually knew !!
Anyway, I now got hold of the modders pack and the DDL pack.
I might also consider doing a few models. Eventually....Cheers.

sorting one problem just causes more......
where do i find the root.vp file ?
is it just another folder (such as missons etc) or is it located in a folder. VpViewer mangaed to find the Freespace ("1") folders all by itself, but I'm interested in FS2!

Theoretically, it is in the main directory of FS2, so :\Games\FreeSpace2.

If not, begin searching for that file with windows.
Or if you are sure it is in the main directory, you may set the options in Files->Options in VpView.

All your VP archives will be in the root of your FS2 directory. It's the law.

in VpViewer, open VP shows
"games/freespace/data/freespace.vp" so is that the Freespace root ? (everything's in there models etc)

Well that's the FeeSpace root, yes. But not the FreeSpace2 root. You want root.VP in your FreeSpace2 directory.

I found FS1 root.vp without trying but can't find the FS2 vp.
Maybe I shoul reinstall and not put in any mods.

Reinstall with a full install and THEN put your mods in.

VPs go in the root directory, NOT /data/
Effects, thrusters, and backgrounds go in /data/effects
Command briefing anims go in /data/cbanims
Interface stuff goes in /data/interface
Models go in /data/models
Missions go in /data/missions
Textures go in /data/maps
HUD stuff (shield anis, the portraits that show up when messages play, etc) go in /data/hud
Tables go in /data/tables

I think there is a stickified thread somewhere here which contains the vp files.

Right. After all the messin' I found it right in the FS2 directory.
Don't seem to be able to view ship models like FS1 though.

The models are not contained in rot_fs2.vp, just the tables and such.  As I recall (I am not at my own computer at the moment), the models are in sparky_fs2.vp.

I find that if I don't install the DM tools to their default location I quite often can't open models from withing VPViewer. Which is a bit gay.

got it sorted now. Been looking at ship models and listening music and voice files. Can't believe the amount of stuff in there you wouldn't usually get to see/hear (message out-takes etc)
Pity the poor sod who had to put in all the super-cap turrets....

Pity the people who had to turret the juggernauts, superjuggies, and the Gargant in Inferno.

It is still nothing ... if you don't install Q3Radiant(Quake 3 map editor) to the default directory the installation proggy says .. it cannot read the textures/items etc. at all.

DM tool sometimes succeed, at least as you say.

Your post was incomprehensible because of your grammar.

Ouch! :D:D

Then of course, there's poor me who has to turret a 12km long Super Battleship for The Swarm War because my pal who's creating the story with me insists on massed laser banks for the Taladir........

Read it again, I wanted to say that DM tools is better, because it OFTEN succeeds opening models for FS1, but Q3Radiant never succeeds if you don't install it in the default folder than the installation progress offers.
