Ever since Tiara showed me RPG Maker I've been working on a game. Its been 6 months and finally after a lot of practice I have the time to start one. Tiara also told me she started a HLP RPG here but currently doesn't have a lot of time due to her new job (I still have to get used to the fact that I'm now actually living with a teacher:p).
Anyway, back on track. Now that I'm going to create my own RPG I'd like to know what you guys like in an RPG. Things like:
- What kind of characters
- What kind of Villains
- What kind of story/genre (And no, it will not be sci-fi :p It will be in a fantasy setting. So choose between your Orc/Human/Elves setting or your average Final Fantasy setting, or whatever you can think of.)
I hope you guys can help me out with this because I want to make a game thats enjoyable for everyone ;)
This is a single player 2D RPG btw.
Current progress is:
- Story: 2% (Some minor details done only)
- Database: 90% done (Besides the characters/chipsets/common events almost done)
- Custom graphics: 50% done 9Some done here but still need to work on it)
For the site, go HERE (http://www.swooh.com/peon/Tiara/Charlotte/DDsite.html) (Under VERY heavy construction)
Thanks to Tiara who gave me a few kb's of non-popup cluttered webspace ;)

Mini-games. See Link to the Past for some perfect examples.

Indeed. Nothing quite like it.
Ocarina of Time, also.
-
Ah, yes. I'm already planning a fishing game and a "throw object" game ;)
More will probably come when I'm in a later state of development.
-
well, you might as well want to see the whole Zelda series, but yeah. Helping random people with odd problems (side-quests), stuff that happens wether you help out or not.. like uh.. maybe a war between two kingdoms or something. You can get involved, but they still fight each other either way. Could make for an interesting mini-quest bit.
-
mmh, I'm more for your regular fantasy setting ( orcs, etc - of course, I probably was an orc in my last life, I dig the greenskins :p ), but with an anime flavour ( like Lodoss, if you know it ). Vilains should be really vilain, and good guys should be soso ( I hate superclean good guys :doubt: ).
My only grip is that rpg maker only allows those tunred based/random fights, right? I hate those :doubt:
btw, thx for the post in the other thread, and I forgive you for the bad french :D ( couldn't reply, thread locked ).

Not really, I can create a hack 'n slash ala Zelda game but that would require a helluva lot of coding and won't even appeal to everyone.
But I can however, eliminate the random fights by having the beasties/enemies walk around in the dungeons etc. You'd only fight if they approach you or the other way around. On the worldmap it'd still be random fights though. Even though I personally prefer this above the repetative random battles, I don't know what others will think about it.

don't forget to add some romantic flavour between some characters when creating the story
and I agree with Venom that villains should be really villain. But as for the lead character... I think in some of the good RPG stories the hero is more or less dragged into the main plot without him wanting/knowing to be in one before it's "too late".
And let some of the characters have an overly cute pet
Anime influence all the way :D

Over the top spells! ;7
I'm sorry, but Apocalypse in Final Fantasy VIII got me into the whole RPG lark on its own! Then there's Prophecy in Skies of Arcadia (Legends) which is ridiculously powerful in places!

Also, a minor site update! (http://swooh.com/peon/Tiara/Charlotte/DDsite.html)

Y'know, a 60's / 70's set RPG (i.e retro) could be fun......
-
mmh, looked at your site. Dangerous desires? you need nude chicks, then :D

...perhaps... :p
And Gortef, Thanks :)

Site is currently down... :(
Anyway, I think I'm going for a Middle Earth world/Final Fantasy world hybrid. Thoughts?
-
thoughts: good idea.
-
I'm thinking Human/Elves/Orcs as the major races but with Final Fantasy mindless monsters roaming throughout the world. Ow, and maybe an Ent forest :p
Now, what about the battlesystem.
It will be a side-view FF battles system, but should it be like this:

Or should I just keep the all-random battles besides boss-battles and special battles?
-
Well, you know what I think :) I prefer the non-random idea. I hate those endless amounts of random battles. :mad2:
-
non-random. random fights gets annoying real quick.
-
great minds think alike :).
mmh? what do you mean with "great? where?"
-
This is a very simple example of what it would look like if we were to use the non-random system:

Aw, that makes me all nostalgic for Link to the Past
-
Explosives, drugs, and really ugly bad guys. And good guys, for that matter. Basically, Fallout and Wasteland, and nothing else.

I'd drink for that... I mean, it's a good idea
-
Make it kinda noir-ish. That'd be cool. Dunno how best to describe it, other than really, really dark.
-
*bumpity-bump*

something were everything goes wrong, nobody likes you, your friends are dead, your house is gone, you had your revenge, and now you just want to live a quite life.
but then again, someone comes to you with some problem, and you need money, so you might as well go out on one last easy job........
-
...which then turns out to involve something about the world being on the brink of destruction?
-
Just once I wanna see an RPG where you bring the world to the brink of destruction. Strictly for variety, see. Also, it'd make a lot more sense, having this infinite army of rather pathetic sorts fighting to save their planet rather than destroy it.
How about a Hobo RPG? Nothing particularly cosmic happens in the plot, but you get this nice plot arc of going broke, losing your job, and trying to escape to a country with better welfare services, and to this end you ride trains, wander the countryside, steal food, get drunk/stoned (to regain health points), expose yourself to women and children in the park (for entertainment), stab people in alleyways, and otherwise engage in typical hoboish activities.

mmm, both idea's sound good.

actually, I do like the first one a lot too. second one, is, well, boring, I don't wanna play my own daylife :doubt:
-
You need huge, crazy, overly powerful spells/summons. The ultimate villain should have some personal relation to the main character (but not be his/her father) and must be human. An excellent example of a good villain is Kefka in FF3. Also don't sugar coat things like a lot of old RPGs do. If a village gets wiped out don't have the people escape and live happily ever after. If a main character dies let them stay dead. And give it a sort of sad, solemn atmosphere, like FF3 or FS1 had.
