Title: cellshadeing example
Post by: Bobboau on August 31, 2003, 12:50:44 pm
for those of you interested in makeing use of my cell shadeing SCP feature I have made a little example of how to do it,
here (http://freespace.volitionwatch.com/blackwater/fighter2t-05cell.zip) is a myrmadon in full cell shaded glory, it has not only altered maps but also the caricteristic black outline.

for anyone who want's to use this here (http://tokyo.cool.ne.jp/cgf/tsx_e/toonedge.html) is a tool that will help you make the outlines (note it doesn't like many of the origonal FS models, though as far as I can tell all models made natively in TS work fine), set the color to black on the object it generates, i.e. don't texture it
I realy want someone to make use of this as it needs models and textures to be made for it and is not something that can be done simply, despite how it looks.
I know there are at least a few people interested in it

some pics

oh yes, and for those of you who don't know there is a build that you need for this, you can find it in the cell/toon shadeing thread I made, or you can wait for the next SCP relese and use the comand line option '-cell'

gonna add my own line for max users for how to make the black outlines: copy the ship mesh, invet the noarmals of the polygons, apply a black map to it, and use the "grow" ( I think that's the name iirc ) to make it slightly bigger. voila :)

That looks brilliant - I wasn't to convinced by the Hecate and what have you with the original release, but I really like what you've done there :)

I'm going cel for The Swarm War.......at least, if it ever gets made......the way it's going, without a limits increase it'll die.....

Incidentally, I don't get how this ToonEdge thing works.......:(

select a single object (ie not the whole model, just one part of it, like the main hull)
open the toon edge plugin
click the add button, it should now have a outline model generated
select the object in the list and were it says line it will now have 0.05, you can leve it as is or make it more or less depending on personal taste, I like .1
paint the generated object (the outline) with flat black (no texture) and glue it to the parent object (the object it is based on)
convert,
note PCS will make you're black outline turn red, I have made a hack that will for flat pollys always make them black untill this issue gets resolved

Where's the hack? :)

in the game, as long as you use the -cell comand option and have a flat poly it will be assumed that you wanted to render and outline

Oh....

It would be nice if PCS actually converted something for a change too......Just says to me the 'stack overflow protection' rubbish.....

Bob, even with the pixellated map that is bad-ass. If I didn't already want to be Venom, I'd want to be you. :D

It would be nice if the game did the shading for you...

what do you mean, the outline?
or the textures?

I tryed to do the outline but decided to just have models built for it as it would be faster to have them precalculated (not to mention that I couldn't get it to work)

aren't we a bit schizophrenic? :p

For the record, I've started doing cell maps for my arcadia ( Harlocks one, not the FS2 space station ), but I deleted everything after I did a couple maps. Too damn boring, plus there's 27 maps on that ship, so hell to that :p

I wonder if a FreeSpace anime would be popular in Japan?

GONZO Digimation.
Title: FS2 anime?

A Freespace 2 anime? Hmm, given FS2's quality to success ratio, I predict it would run two episodes and then be downloaded, rewritten, and animated multiple times by many many people.

FS has a very animeish feel, with all the swarm missles and spray'n pray weapons

this sounds like a good project for someone trying to make a name for themselves, it realy doesn't take that much skill or tools (you could probly use MS paint) it only takes an enormus amount of time and an infinite ability to withstand tedeus activities

yup, Gonzo would be my choice too. they know how to make huge space battles, and with Last Exile, their skill have become outstanding ( for me, LE is the best anime ever ).

heh? LE plot is really deep and well thought. Sure, Vandread wasn't much of a brainer, but the goal was obviously not there ;)
