Post by: tEAbAG on September 02, 2003, 12:49:45 pm
Which is the best square rpg?  Now im talking old school here, snes or earlier.

My fav was FF VI, but i just got turned on to Ocean Star.  Its not completly translated, but its very good and it got me wondering what other imports i missed.  Any suggestions?

Toss up between Chrono Trigger and Secret of Mana.  I never really got in to the whole Final Fantasy thing.

Well if we're going OT, then what you ought to be playing is Link to the Past. But the dude's after Square games.

LOL Sorry, I always call them Platform Games, and think of RPG's as the ones you all sit around a table rolling dice for....

Just got an image of someone rolling on a D6 to see if their head collides with a brick with a feather on it ;)

Flipside :D

Oh yes, and as far as the Topic is concerned, Ranarama on the Speccy :)

1). FF6, I mean even if its for Kefka alone :D
- (Shared first place) Chrono trigger, cool and complex story. Not your average bad guy/good guy. Nice time travel system. Good plot, good graphics, good battle system, etc etc.
2). Tales of Phantasia. Good game.
3). Terranigma, I dunno but the whole story around it just fascinated me. It had a nice Zelda battle system. Even better then the Zelda one even.
4). Zelda. Yes it was good but became boring after playing it a while. Too linear but still an awesome game.
5). Bahamut Lagoon. Just a plain more then good game.

-EDIT: Whoops... not all Square :p My bad...

I will brook no criticism of Zelda. Not one tiny scrap. Everyone bow down and worship its magnificence. Then watch this (http://uploads.newgrounds.com/105000/105053_ganondorf_returns.swf).

1) Romancing Saga 3, non-linear is great
2) Final Fantasy VI, it ruled, though it was pretty easy...
3) Final Fantasy IV, my first RPG
4) Chrono Trigger, fun, very fun
5) Final Fantasy V, neat system, didn't like the plot/characters
6) Final Fantasy II
7) Seiken Densetsu 3
8) Bahamut Lagoon

Yes, yes DG we all fear and respect the almighty Zelda.

Tales of Phantasia and Terranigma look pretty cool and i just got Bahamut Lagoon,.  Has any one played Front Mission?  Wanna know if its worth the time i spend looking for a good translation.

BTW I shouldn't have specified squaresoft, but thats what i think of when im talking about consol RPGs

Super Metroid on the SNES was pretty fun as well :)

Front Missions's great, not sure how good the translation is though. Only played the jap version. Customizing those 'bots is fun.

and if it's any oldy RPG here're some I like...

Fire Emblem (5 I think), fun SRPG
Der Langrisser, pretty fun SRPG, graphics look old though
Mother 2 (Earthbound), hilarious, didn't like the battles
Dragon Quest 5 and 6 (called Dragon Warrior in America)
Dragon Quest 3 Remake, looks are one par (or better) with 6
Lunar (Sega Saturn), old RPG, but it had some voice acting!

For Square? Final Fantasy IV all the way.

Overall? Tales of Phantasia is hands down my favorite. Chrono Trigger wasn't bad, neither was Legend of Zelda, but I loved Tales of Phantasia's battle system.

I'm gonna wait for Star Ocean to be completely translated before I start playing it.

Seiken Densetsu 3 - Kick ass game with multiple choices for main character and companions.

Tales of Phantasia - Real time combat.  Need I say more?

Chrono Trigger - Best story and character development I've seen in a game to date.  Awesome graphics as well.

Final Fantasy III - Great story and characters

Super Mario RPG - Played it once, loved it, didnt want to spoil the greatness by playing it again.

Shadowrun - Very good use of a psudo-3D environment with a touch of "Total Recall"ishness to the story.

Secret of Mana - A good story with real time combat and believable characters.  But whats with the pink head-gear?

These great games are in no particular order, but the best of them I believe would be, Chrono Trigger.

EDIT: Oops, Shadowrun is not Squaresoft, its Capcom.

I think you're missing out, mate. :) Find Chrono Trigger on a SNES emulator somewhere, and play it... it's just so... clever. There's like seventeen alternate endings and they all weave in and out. The only game that ever did time travel right, IMHO.

New tablet, eh? Awesome. :) Anyway, if you ever find the time:

Chrono Trigger's ROM is on this page...
http://www.romnation.net/index/snes/snes_c

You can get SNES9x, the best emulator I know, here...
http://www.snesroms.bz/free-emulator.htm

Warning though, CT has taken up several waking days of my life away which I'll never get back. But it was worth it :D

The greatest RPG ever on any console, by any company is ChronoTrigger. The second greatest is ChronoCross. As much as I like Final Fantasy 6, even it must give way before Chrono.

Someone should blurb out those addresses (admin/poster and quoter) as the site they link to has a few p0rn ads on the page, and the questionable nature of the content.

I fear for Fallout 3 in the hands of JESawyer but hes shown that he can be bullied by the hardcore fans (i.e. me) to stick to the true nature of the games.

However FOPOS probably wont sell so they will scrap FO3,if it does sell Interplay (in all their superb marketing genius) will scrap FO3 and make FOPOS2.

FO3 is Interplays trump card, FO:PoS(piece of ****) is just a mindless cashcow.

JESawyer has demonstrated he is competant to be true to Fallout. I think us FO fans are developing somewhat of a reputation you know, as being rather fanatical. I'd still buy if it used the FO2 engine without bugs, but using the Jefferson engine will improve it a lot.

I think Fallout fans have a reputation to upkeep as the most rabid fans of any game.......... the thing is unlike Feargus or MCA JES hasnt shown he can stand up to Interplay's middle management who think they know what the modern gamers want.

That said if MCA had got the project then would it have been another PS:T or an IWD.

However the only reason FO 3 could be Interplay's trump card is because they dont have any other viable licenses to play with anymore.

FF3 at least that's the number in the US; the one with Kefka.  I never beat it but I've played enough of it to tell it's great.

Too bad you really can't do a PS:T sequel. :)

assuming they're among the oldest editors around, assuming thet're still quite full of cash, I assume they've always been good at business.

This is the Interplay thats not made anymoney from games sales for the last 6 years. The only reason its still alive is because they Sold Shiny, the Hunter license and were bought by Titus. They have possibly THE worst management of any of the major games firms.

In 2000 only 9% of Interplay's output was console based, they were loosing money, they came to the conclusion that making more console games = more money. Now the output is up to 45% and they are loosing MUCH more.

Not forgetting its interplay who "released" and "adverstised" FS2, then moaned that it didnt sell much. Not a. telling anyone it was actually out or about to come out and b. only printing a total of 10 copies for Europe isnt a good start.

The lack of an Australian release of Final Fantasy Chronicles (FF4 + Chrono Trigger) makes me really wish I could mod my PS2:

But after having two of the things fail on me, I thought it wise to take out EBs extended warranty on the third.
