Title: Question: Thief II - The Inverted Manse
Post by: Rampage on September 02, 2003, 04:50:10 pm
The Inverted Manse is a fan-made mission for Thief II: The Metal Age and can be found at Thief-TheCircle.  I heard it's pretty good.

Has anyone experienced it before?  I just want some comments and suggestions.

Comments would be appreciated!

Okay.  I admit it!  I'm a wuss.

Inverted Manse, The is a special twist to the Thief plot.  Originally based on the fan-made mission for Thief: TDP called Cult of the Resurrection.  This follow-up features an abandoned Hammerite smelting plant and an underground tunnel set used by the Pagans.  Now the undead, summoned by some mad Pagan necromancer who seeks revenge on the Hammers and society, has overruned the place.  You as Garrett go in seeking the instruction set for the magical Spirit Stone, a mysterious Pagan artifact you found in the previous mission.

I played the mission (never got far) and found the undead crawling everywhere.  I had all lights on in the room, gamma set to the highest level, and Christian music BLASTING from a nearby stereo; I still can't concentrate enough to get past the two Hammerite zombies patrolling the entrance. [Shudder]

I actually got this game and Deus Ex for free with a soundcard. :D An excellent game and quite different from most FPS games out there, but I'm stuck on the fourth mission because I can't figure out where to go next. :p I will try this mod out once I finish the game.

That's the problem right there. Evil unholy "Christian" music preventing you from doing your god-given duty of layeth ye smackethdown on the undead! (pardon ye old testamony style o' da writin' mon)

Inverted Manse was the first FM (Fan Mission) to be awarded the coveted Gold Hammer, the highest ranking available for Thief FMs. It's generally regarded as one of the best FMs ever created. Its author, Sledge, was subsequently hired by Ion Storm Austin to do level design for Thief III.

This is, as has been previously noted, an Undead mission. However, it does give you a snazzy glowing undead-slaying sword. What's unique about this mission is that it changes drastically depending on which difficulty level you choose. Not only do your objectives change, but your start point and accessible areas change as well. It's like three missions in one! The level design is technically fantastic, it runs well on low-end systems, it has several new enemies, and it even throws in some creepy scripted sequences.

I got the same deal that CP did. I ended up with two copies of Deus Ex and one copy of Thief2 when I bought my card. I suspect the extra Deus Ex was supposed to be MDK2.

I've stll not finished Thief1 so I haven't bothered to start Thief2.

Funny you should mention this now, I actually just sarted downloading FMs lastnight. I think I got that one.

I HATE those goddamned undead Hammer Swordsmen. Damn scary, especially when they first see you.

And you ever notice how zombies always seem to move alot faster when you're not looking at them? Like when youre desperately fumbling at a lock trying to get the door open before he latches onto your neck.

"Haunts". They carry swords instead of hammers because hammers are holy symbols. And there is absolutely nothing holy about these guys.

When I first played that mission, I didn't even know Thief had any "supernatural" elements(I hadn't played thief 1). I went down to those catacombs, and was a bit anxious because of all those whispers and strange noises. So suddenly I see this guard, it was dark so I didn't think about why he had different kind of clothing than the normal mechanists. Anyway, I sneak up behind him and hit him with the blackjack, *thump*, no effect. He just stands there for a split second, and then turns around, revealing his skeleton face.

AAARRRGHHH!!!!

:eek2: :eek2: :eek2: :eek2:

:shaking: :shaking:

No game has _ever_ scared me that much, not even System Shock 2.

Oh yeah, I got MDK2 as well with that bundle (SBLive x-gamer, I'm assuming?), along with UT. The copy of UT did not work correctly but I already had that game anyway, and even without it this is probably the best game bundle I have seen.

Back to T2, I am on that level where you have to implicate some policeman by putting a dead man's belonging in his office, but the level is very large and you have a number of objectives. The only real criticism I have of this game is that the map system is lacking, and it is really important since some of the levels are quite big and complicated.

aaaah! no, not that one :D I'm talking in the first Thief, Dark Project :)
In the catacombs, there's a damn viscious scene: during ALL the game, you're used to see hammerites corpses lying on the ground. Well, they're there, they're dead. You also see a lot of zombies, and half the time, they jump on you when you come too close to them ( bouh! did I surprise you? ). Then there was that room, just after a trap ( throwing darts at you ), you see the usual, a zombie and a hammerite, dead, side by side, like they killed each other. As usual, when you see a zombie "dead" on the ground, you get suspiscious, you have your sword ready, you come close, ready to slash it down and run away... you get closer, and even closer... and then, it's the damn hammerite that rises again and jumps at your throat w/o any warning! Rah, I jumped out of my chair, I'm sure I let a shout go! damn thing! It NEVER happens anywhere else in the game, even after, but you know that it CAN happen, so after that incident, you can't even feel safewhen you see a regular hammerite corpse. That's how you create tension, it's grand art!

I love that game :)

Umm... there's a Hammerite zombie in Cragscleft. I thought there were a few of them scattered throughout the game.

you sure? In Cragscleft, I'm pretty sure there's only regular zombies and a couple spiders, for exemple.

I know what you're trying to refer to.  In that upper cave in the generator room [mines] there are three bodies; two can be splattered with Holy Water Arrows.  The other, a Hammerite priest's corpse, cannot.  So, it's not a Hammerite zombie.

Not true.  In the Inverted Manse mission, there's a class of Haunts that carry hammers.

Another note: If you look at the Hammerite emblem on the Haunt's uniform, you can notice that the hammer is "inverted", like an upside-down cross.
