Been lookin forward to this moment :D

Meh, graphics are good but not revolutionary...and for some reason, I get the lowest (poly) LOD when I'm zoomed right up close on fighters and corvettes. The Mothership and Resource Collectors seems ok...

Tons of mirrors can be found here (http://www.bluesnews.com/cgi-bin/board.pl?action=viewthread&threadid=43990), including ones far better (I assume from past experience) than the one posted above.

So how does it play? How is the new interface? How does contruction and research compare with the original game?

I played a skrimish against the AI, still haven't tried out the single or multi player portions. The game balance is pretty good. I was disapointed that you couldn't build any capital ships other than a Carrier. I hope its not like this in the ful game, cause I wanna see big destroyers and battleships going at it. The backgrounds are nice, pretty stylized though they're bright and "epic". The game feels very much like Homeworld 1 with updated graphics. The gameplay mechanics are almost exactly the same. The ship classes are pretty much the same as in HW, though there is a bit of a twist, in that you have to build a platform for each type (frigate, corvette, fighter etc) of ship. The graphics do the job nicely, though they're not "Wow, thats so cool." Its a bit worse than EVE, I think, though its hard to guess since the styles are different.
I'll post some more later when I've played the SP and MP sections.

I'm going to disagree with you on a few points since I began with the singleplayer game and tutorials as opposed to a skirmish. I can see how you have this type of first impression by trying the skirmish mode first.
The graphics are very impressive when the detail is cranked up as you really get a good sense of scale and the various special effects are very well done. Also, you're not taken out of the action ever and the pacing is much better.
The basic gameplay mechanics seem the same (the rock papper scissors of hard counters), but it seems better balanced then Homeworld 1 where units would become obsolete, each unit has its own strengths even when newer ones are available.
It overall seems like the best parts of Cataclysm were adopted in how you can upgrade the mothership with various devices. So you can have additional firepower at the cost of perhaps not building one of the construction modules, etc.
Resourcing seems to be much better as well since you can salvage debris after a battle. This means you don't have to completely rely on resource rushing. It reminds me quite a bit of Battlezone 1.
The singleplayer mode seems stronger and better balanced.
I'm very impressed so far. From what is shown on the various sites, the full version will be much more impressive with the various capital ships and more upgrades that will allow players to customize their fleets to their liking.
It looks like the upgrade system is loosely based on the ideas in Impossible Creatures. Homeworld 2 is sort of a Frankenstein's monster of their previous games, and it seems to work well.

There are currently no queues on Fileplanet.
Get iiiiit!

it won't run :(

he didn't say the graphics were bad he said they very very good, but not on par with eve ones. I haven't tried that demo yet, but compairing the shots from the two games, plus the fact I've played eve for a month, I must agree with Rictor. Not that it's a pb to me anyway, I've never been a big fan of HW ( playing a warez version w/o the musics kindda ruins the fun I suppose ).
-
Awesome, downloading. I wonder what this'll run like on my comp. :D
-
yea, but EvE is all graphics, no gameplay.
Man, I wish my PC wasn't busted, then I could play the demo :(
-
okay.. i've got mine to work, just remember that HW2 uses OpenGL, so disable the Z buffer, otherwise it won't work...
other than that.. it ran smooth as silk on mine..

Does eve have ships that are 50 times the size of the mothership? Whats the max number of ships on screen at a time in Eve as well?
I was under the impression that some graphical effects were toned down or not added to make the game plyable. i.e ships casting shadows on other ships (its only self casting now which is still great). Also effects that were in the game seem to have been removed like the uber complex explosion effects for the fighters and the much nicer ion trials. That said when there are some big ships thundering around i think the game will be far more "epic" and impressive.
I like the way the smaller ships and fighters seem to die rather fast unlike HW where youd spend half an hour shooting at a frigate, hopefully the limited build number big ships like the battlecruiser will be able to soak up a load of damage to slow the whole thing down.
That said the new found vulnerability in the small and medium units seems to make strike groups useless. The are meant to cut down on micromanagement but they just seem to "clump" your units together and are completely useless for combat. The faster pace of combat seems to mean MORE micromanagement not less which is a bit annoying.
All in all its a very nice graphical improvement over the first game and the storyline is shaping up well, hopefully this will be GOTY material like the first one.
Oh and no Agnus Dei this time :(
-
Correct me if I'm wrong - but doesn't one "build" of any fighter type mean you get one wing of that type now? Wheras in the original HW you had to build each ship individually...
In that respect, we're talking huge waves of fighters far more easily / rapidly than before - although they can still die against anti-fighter stuff just as easily...
-
You build 5 fighters and 3 corvettes.

yup, it does, it also has giant space stations, hell, it even has real size planets.
around the major stations, you can have a hundred players at the same time. Don't forget they're all player con, troled, and each ship is highly detailled. You may not like Eve, but like it or not, it's the most beautiful space game around right now.
edit: titan class gallente ship:
and that's an ingame shot.

So.... When can I hope to see some FS ships in a mod for HW2?
-
Not until someone buys it, duh :D
Anyways, EvE may be pretty, but that's it. There's virtually no player interaction in it. Hell, it doesn't need players, the whole freaking thing is "click on that badguy, and wait".
But, EvE is pretty, I must admit. Unfortunately, that's ALL it has going for it.

that's the only point I was discussing, since Eve was picked up as a graphical exemple. but I'm bored of repeating myself, so whatever.

Having just played the demo. That is, tutorial, campaign and 2 skirmishes, it gets "meh"
Nothing more.

I liked homeworld, and this one looks to be shaping up quite well in my estimation. The strike craft have a few minor balance issues but nothing too major, and I hope to see some minor tweaks in the actual game to the things that are not quite ironed out. The Strike Groups in particular, though I don't think they were designed for the way most people tried to use them in the demo. I mean, if you build your limit's worth of ships and put them into one giant strike group, then yes, they get scattered. However, if you form more modest strike groups and control them in tandem, they seem to work rather well. There were times that I wanted to just slow it down, I'll admit, but the faster pace really helps the game in my opinion. Also, I'm a big fan of the return of the Homeworld style limit system; as the support points system used in Cataclysm was abysmal. As soon as you got a bigger ship, you scrapped the smaller ones to make room. However, it is rather annoying to only build one thing at a time, when the original mothership could spit out ships often faster than they could come out of the ports. Having multiple building facilities helps this though.
-
Meh, the mission scripting needs some work. The interceptors can fire at bombers without having to be afraid they fire back. Bombers lock on taget and don't defens themselves.
-
The strike groups are basically just a LITTLE bit more powerful than in HW, but Relic made more of them to add a bit of an "epic" feel to the game. At least that's what they said.
-
Um, aren't bombers supposed to die like flies when attacked by fighter? It's not like Alpha1 is flying them and they don't seem to have a turret XD
-
...No... They don't have thick armour for nothing. But what I mean is that they don't even try to evade or fire back. They jusy stoically continue attacking like mindless drones.

I should be able to get started in a few months assuming I can find a job.:(

Just out of curiosity, have you ever played any RTS game? When you tell some units (A) to attack some other units (B), and then units (C) attack units (A), does (a) continue firing at (B), or do they stop and start shooting at (C)?
While the smart thing for them to do is to start shooting at (C), strategy calls for the Strategic Target you've selected to die (and thus help achieve part of the Overall Strategy), while tactically it's smarter for the bombers to defend then kill the target.
It would be nice if there was a setting to change the behavior tho. I haven't tried the Tactics button yet. Could there be an option to adjust that there?

Yeah that should do it. I don't know where they fall by default, but it seems like they may go into aggressive initially. Try Defensive and see how they act.

After seeing Venom's shot, EVE does look good. But EVE isn't handling the capacity of 600+ ships on screen at once. (Assuming 6 player multiplayer or so)

Strike group orders do allow ships like bombers to behave more defensively. However when up against interceptors the best defense for bombers I've found is to retreat to a ship with a hangar bay and wait out the fight until corvettes or flak frigates have destroyed the ships that threaten the bombers. Evasive tactics helps give them the extra speed and manuverability edge to escape to shelter. (of course unlike most players I always run my mothership or a carrier into a final fight for the extra firepower)
-
I had 20 wings of bombers, took out a carrier, 2 torp frigates, and a crapload of interceptors and pulsar corvettes(at least 6 wings of both). My bombers eventually died from the reinforcements that were being sent from the mothership and other carrier but dude, bombers are teh pwnage!
I particularly like the flak effect.
-
What I like is having triple squadron flying together. Too many seems to not work well, while 1 squadron either doesn't do enough damage fast enough or get slaughtered. Then again, I'm still completely new to HW.
-
It kind of cool how the strike craft choose their own formations based on the situation and the tactics assigned by the user.
Also really like I've got a strange bug where I get low LOD levels zoomed up right next to the ship.
-
They must have written the autolod.script backwards or somthing.
-
Works fine for me...
1. Check the LOD setting in the Setup-->Video options
2. Upgrade your computer- it probably auto-compensates for your slow-ass computers :p
-
Question: Why do gunships exist (besides to annoy you when there's only one carrier left floating around somewhere building gunships)? Interceptors eat them for lunch and gunships barely scratch carriers.
-
Liberator: I had the same bug. But I also at the time had an older version of my graphic drivers. Homeworld displayed a message saying "Upgrade your drivers" or something like that when entering the game. So I did, and the problem seem to have gone away.
-
I've said it once, and I'll say it again:
I don't trust them when the previous version, the one I'm using (43.00 IIRC), is 16+ mb and the new version is 8 mb. They've taken something out and I want to know what it is.
-
Well, I think its mostly useless stuff you don't need. Like the ATI Control Panel and some media player thing. AFAIK, display drivers should be under 8 megs, so you're getting what you need.
-
Corvettes do seem to be a ludicrously poor class.....
-
I can't wait to get ahold of the modding tools :D
There are some tweaks I have in mind already.
