Hey and welcome to the HLPBB!!!
We don't really have a mapping forum at the moment, so this was the best place to post this topic :)
Your question is by no means rare, it's one of (if not THE) most popular questions ever asked :D
Check this tutorial for more information, and if you still need help, don't hesitate to post here :)

Oh! Oh! I wanna fire the beam!
Ahem! *clears throat*
Fire Control, target DarkElNino. Power up photon beam cannons. Commence plasma core insertion. OPEN FIRE!

Exits are to the sides and rear. Personal flamethrowers are located beneath your seat in case of emergency or naughty disposition. If you run into any Shivans while crawling through the ductwork, it's probably just Carl. Give him your lunch, back away slowly, and you'll be fine.

I think what you're looking for is the beam-free-all sexp in FRED. Once you set that on in a mission you create, ships will tear at each other like there's no tomorrow, provided the enemy is in their firing range and arc.

I know it's a cliche, but ElNino - do the walkthrough
-
Use the "Beam free all" SEXP in your SEXP editor, then put the capital ship's name in the box below it.
BTW, doesn't everyone call it "FREDing" and not "Mapping"? :D

Quite right, as the term Mapping here is used for making and applying texture maps to models.
And yes, do the walkthrough. Don't just browse through it, actually sit down and do it. It's under the Help menu, and it teaches you everything you need to know about FREDding.

Yuh huh. Obviously we have a FPS fan here :)

Wow. When he said mapping, I didn't even know what he meant...
-
from what i heared of the VBB, we are just a bunch of real friendly and helpfull people here.

While were talking about FREDing, i cant figure out how to add missions in sequence in the campaign editor. I remember doing it months ago but compeltely forgot how.
-
Ctrl click, as I recall.
-
I thought it was click + drag?
-
CTRL+click adds a mission. To link to a mission, drag the former onto the latter. Set the 'pass' conditions, then right click on the mission name button and select 'Repeat Mission.'
-
thank you for the help, ill try that link and im glad i found a website with people who play the game

One note to beam usage: use the fire-beam if your ship doesn't want to fire where you want it to.:)
-
I wish I knew why, but the extended walktrhough always seems to produce a messed up mission.
My friend ended up with the same thing.
Of course that was total Fred noobie days and I didn't have a clue why it wouldn't work, but it taught me enough to go on doing proper missions by myself, so I do recommend it. Even if your mission doesn't work in the end.
I might do it again sometime. Just to see if the walkthrough is wrong, or I am wrong.:doubt:
-
The only glitch with 'fire-beam' is that you A) get the right turret and B) the ship is in the fire arc!! :D

Could be you entered the variable name as Dock Count rather than DockCount. I made that mistake myself. :D
-
also "beam free all" won't make the Sathanas open up with it's main beams. (I'm guessing 99.99999% of you already knew that)
are you getting the same fault as the one in my "New Guy with Questions" Ferret ?

Yeah, the turret has to "see" its target. If this was not required, the turret could do crazy things or the ship could even shoot itself! That's why it's coded so that the beam won't fire if the target is outside the firing arc.
