Title: Mission 22 question (spoilers)
Post by: mnftg64 on September 04, 2003, 07:19:44 pm
mission 22 is the one where you start off testing the stealth fighters then the shivans attack. how can you destroy the corvette that jumps in. The aquataine never induces enough damage and I can disable it and attack it after the aquataine leaves but it wont go lower than 10 %. any suggestions?

you have to destroy it before the aquitane jumps... its tricky, but can be done...

i figured that, but I just can't get the aquitaine to do enough damage fast enough. do you get a medal or something for doing it?

The trick is to stay close to that corvette.  For some reason the Aquitane doesn't fire otherwise =\

If you want the medal for this mission, simply keep the Aquitaine above 50% hull. People will tell you that you need to kill the Moloch as well, but they're big fat liars. Take a bank of Stiletos to quickly knock out the Moloch's beams (or a SDG if you prefer) and then concentrate on the bombers

Actually, when you're near the enemy Moloch, you act as sort of an extra long-range sensor for the Aquataine so that it may acquire a lock for weapons firing through the nebulae.

This is the case in all combat in nebulae mission. You're the extra set of eyes that let the warships get effective damage and destruction of your enemy from the longest range possible.

You can even have one of your wingmen do it for you by ordering him togo to the target...but he'll probably be destroyed quickly unlike that smart Alpha 1 :)

I think it works the other way too, does it not? If you've got an asset out by a distant enemy target, then you can pick that enemy up in the nebula. Or did I imagine that? I am quite tired, so it's possible.

Actually I think to a certain distance it works like that, then your wingmates start to fade into the nebula also, so you wont be able to determine the exact location of your wingmate or the enemy.

Because it can't see it. You're sighting for it.

I just did that mission. I sat next to the damn Capship withit locked into my targeting sensors and the aquitane just crusied past firing nothing.

I think that mission is dodgy. Sometimes it works sometimes it won`t.

As of my experience, the Moloch can be wiped out quickly. Stay close to it at the beginning of the mission.

Have you tried carrying tag missiles?  They may help you out.  Tag the corvette and see what the Aquitane does.

I never managed to nail that Moloch too (only medal I was never able to get)
targeting the Corvette didn't help me 'neither.

You don't need to destroy it to get the medal. You only need to protect the Oberon from delta, and keep the Aquitane's Hull above 50, and play it on medium.

don't know if I can be bothered with all that. I hate pretty much all the Barracuda levels.

Hey Hippo, is that the actual FS2 mission structure ?
How'd you get FRED to acess it ?

He extracted it with VPview no doubt. Once you've done that it's just a matter of loading the mission in like any other.

Full details on VPView can be found in the FAQ.

Might I say that this was one of the dumbest fricken missions of the whole lot. "Hey alpha, protect the Oberon from those stealth fighters. Hey btw, the Stealth fighters are invulnerable and you can't win."

YEAH, that's an excellent review of the stealth fighter's capabilities. Make the Pegasii invulnerable, and cut Alpha down to the player's ship only and anyone could smoke all of those dumb stealth fighters.

A better way to have done it is to have the Pegasii vulnerable (maybe guardian) to damage but becoming invulernable once they go below such and such a level, and when they go below that level they break away and abort the mission. Get all the fighters to abort and you beat 'em.

At least the TAG mission was semi-amusing. But even so, whose going to use TAGs? The player wants lots of kills and giving those kills to some allied warships is not the way to do it.

You lost you wingmen to the stealths?  Never happened to me... but then again, I never let mine leave the Aquitaine's side in the first place.

Just fire a shot near them and they run like hell anyway. (Depending on difficulty, of course)

One trick is to take out the morning star and just push them away from the Oberon. When they are being battered about like a rag doll they can't hit the Oberon :D

I can't get VPView to work on Windows XP.  Is this a known problem, and is there an update to solve it?  There's no error message; the program just doesn't run.

...take out the morning star and push them away....

ah, so that's what it does.
"kinetic weapon". Huh, could mean anything.
As soon as the Shivans arrive, a wing of Seraphim just nails the Oberon anyway.Literally. In my experience.

Kenetic does mean force exhetring...

And yes, there are 18ish cyclops aimed at the oberon at that exact moment... :p

Yeah but by that time FS2 has already determined that you succeeded in protecting it. :D Since the ship was basically scrap metal anyway it doesn't really matter if it gets blown up afterwards :)

'Protect the Oberon from Delta' is not needed, because it is close to be impossible. :)

Actually, I finished that part of the mission with the Oberon at 80% integrity. Only managed it the one time though

I had the hardest time killing the Moloch too. I got it down to less than 5 many many times and even to 1 several times. Was very aggravating.

Eventually I took out 3 of the Aquataine's engines which made it take 2 minutes more to get to the jump node. That extra time I made that damn thing stay there made killing the Moloch easy. Of course my friendly fire % was nice and ugly but I was sick of that mission.

Welcome to HLP, newcomer. We, the proud and little FreeSpace community, are glad that there are still people interested in this game. If you do not happen to be particularly interested in this game, you should stop reading the text in italic.

It is a general tradition at HLP that we zap the newest member using a weapon like this:
:welcome:
That said we modified the original GTVA beam cannon which is hazardless for friendly fire. The beam we fired at you was successfully absorbed by your Newbie Protection Shield technology(developed in January, 2002). Use the power you absorbed to contribute to the work of the community. To find you way how to assist the HLP people, go to FRED Academy (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php/topic,28122.0.html) and make a foray.

Enjoy your stay and keep your Newbie Protection System active all the time until you are officially promoted to Senior Member. Avoid asking about FreeSpace 3. Do a search and you will know why.

Thank you for reading all this piece of writing, let me wish you good luck and a happy stay!

Barracudas suck, I hate them, if you want to be a test pilot you woudn't sign up to the GTVA military division would you?  You'd sign up for the test division, its not like you wouldn't have enough training, the 4th mission in the campaign you are fighting Shivans *continues mindless ranting*
