That's right, a screenshots thread! Post any cool screenshots from Freespace 1, Freespace 2 or FS Open, with mods or without mods! The coolest ones will be chosen by the HLP staff for a website update. Post as many as you want!
Some simple rules:
- Use "lvlshot" tags ([ lvlshot ]image address[ /lvlshot ])
- Post the category of the screenshot (i.e. "FS2 with mods", "FS Open")
- Post a short description of what's happening on the screenshot

pfftt...i would join, 'cept i have no idea how to take these images. I haven't seen a key in-game that actually does take screenshots as in Half Life, and Print screen is too inconvienient with all the pasting and resizing stuff (which i always get wrong).....is there any other way?

Erm, print screen automatically saves the screenshot on your Freespace 2 installation folder...

ok....so it does...now just need to find a place to host the images. Villagephotos reduces the qaulity to a stupid level and Geocities wont allow connecting to this......

Just choose any of the eight latest screens... I won't bother to take any new ones since I don't even have FS1/2 installed. :p

This was before the SCP stuff was around... An Ursa with a Flak turret.
I had an Osiris with 2 beams, but I erased the image...
Back when i was willing to try stuff for the hell of it... :p

I've been doing a bit of Fredding recently (for reasons i cannot say) and on a mission (the pics i posted before were from that) with a bit fleet battle, I had to change to a top-down view of the battlescene to get any idea of what was going on and what was going wrong.
2 VERY interesting pictures in this are as follows.
the first is taken towards the end of the mission, with a large fleet battle between GTVA ships and Unknown Space Vessels.

DG will be the first to admit that he's a hack when it comes to making ships. He's got that far in less than a year of working on mods. Keep working at it and you'll get better :D

Now, it would be nice if a kind soul would get some cool screenshots from the original FS and FS2 campaigns... Some screenies with all the latest SCP improvements would be great too (such as a pic with both specular maps and the fast trails activated).

A couple of shots from the FS Campaign with the newest open build. Shows off specular and glowmaps (by the way, what ever happened to the glow maps standing out in the nebulas? I thought that was extremely cool) I would have more, but FS2 doesn't seem to like nebula missions so well in the current build.

Some great stuff here. Those Inferno and Mindgames explosions are particularly nice.
Karajorma, did you change the color of the existing one for that shockwave or render a new one entirely from scratch? It looks much better than the original at any rate.

Those shockwaves were done by me. I rendered them in LW and converted to 8-bit in PSP. We also have new explosions, but we'll see if we want to show them to you ;7

CF contacted me the second that the OTT version was released to say that he was surprised how much they looked like his. I believe he may have got the original effect from some Lightwave source but I'd have to check with him first.
Darkage. Did you make the effect from scratch? Maybe you had the same source.

I never acused him. Just wonderd and even if he did use it, i put it up for download it aint a secrect anyone who wants to use it can do so. I did mention in the OTT forums i made it from a Tutorial site. As i didn't know how to morph objects at that time.

We've been very careful at MG about the stuff we did use. In fact we contacted most of the creators of publicly released mods before we used them just to double check :D

hehe...good thing, but i think if they released something for the public to use they always mention "just give credit" then most of the time your save, but i agree double checks are good:D

This won't really fit here it's more an SCP stuff, but I guess I could mention it here too.
The main difference as I see it is that the OT explosion is rotated.
Now wouldn't it be better if all explosions were tilted by a random ammount? (or there would be both normal and tilted ones)
I don't mean it as an effect but a new engine feature.

No, I have yet to get a single SCP build to work on this pc; for some reason, all the builds with the graphics enhancements fail on startup. As for fans, all ships in Exposition are aerospace vessels since much of the combat takes place on earth. ;)

Interesting side notes: I've been getting lots of registry errors lately, and more when I fix my computer clock. Bios clock keeps reverting to 2104 and thus places the clock in windows at 1980. Onboard sound is broken (again), even though all proper drivers have been installed, reinstalled, and reinstalled again. USBs are functioning, although my Wingman joystick is usually not detected through the USB ports for some odd reason. Explorer has been crashing a lot recently. Really interesting is the fact that all of this came after I upgraded my PC from 550mhz to 2.6ghz, and after I switched 128mb of ram for 256 DDR.
SCP isn't the only thing that won't work, and it seems to be getting worse recently. Something fishy in my PC.

there's probly something wrong with you're BIOS, I had similar problems, untill I lowered my memory frequency, that fixed it up good
and does SCP totaly not work or is it just unstable, how far can you get?

If I remember right, on one of the really early builds (well before specular mapping) I got as far as pilot select, crashed when I hit select. Newer builds won't even load, they crash before I even get to the screens. Again, it could just my something with my registry and or PC in general.

run a debug build useing the origonal data, it should spit out a good reason for why it's crashing, or give some error mesage, if you manage to get to the pilot selection screen, make a new pilot

There is only one chapter so far:D
I got hit the first time i played that mission. The turret was at 2% and just wanted to make a last run and then got killed by it's beam:D

Something similiar happened to me: I was facing a side turret of an Orion, and I wanted to prevent its last beam run, fired a Trebuchet, destroyed the turret. and the explosion range killed me, too.
And the text on my RIP:
'Was brave to save his fellows, or stupid that the Trebuchet has a large explosion range' :)

FYI: I'm currently replaying the FS2 campaign with the SCP build installed (this one features engine trails, shine mapping, glow mapping). I'll post comprehensive screenshots of the entire game as soon as I'm done. Expect a lot of data to be uploaded - about 100KB per pic, up to 20 pics per mission. You do the math ;)

I beleve it utalizes beam texture tileing, and posably translation, though it is somewhat hard to tell from a tatic image

I'm doing that, and I ended up in a really cool situation where I was killed by the Sathanas during High Noon - the death roll screen displayed a perfect widescreen view of the Colossus and the Sathanas face-to-face, with the Colossus letting loose with an LRBGreen.
Unfortunately, I didn't think to save it. :(

I don't want an exact copy, as there's no fun in that. I'd just like to know the method employed to create the effect, that's all.
I'm after exactly the same kind of effect for Part 3 of The Swarm War where I'm wanting uber-powerful beams. That said, they need to look dramatically different from the regular flavour......

A few months back I did a little experimenting with removing the "huge" flag from most of the beams, and overall speeding up the fire rate/projectile speed of the pulse weapons. Well, it certainly makes for a fearsome scene:

I think I took the huge flag off the LTerSlash on the Fenris foor a while. It was just so fun running around dodging that little beam. :D
I think that the smaller beams should have the flag removed, actually, as long as it's still almost impossible to hit fighters..

On a side note, all FS1 Terran and Shivan shine maps are done, FS1 Vasudans in progress. And you thought shine maps were nice now... ;)

Considering the quality of your glowmaps, I'm not inclined to interfere with your brilliant work.
Still I want to suggest that you use different colors for the shine map than the original - the only example I can come up with was that blue steel look that modified Arcadia had.
BTW I assume your work is the one WE ALL LOOK FORWARD TO, aside from the code wonders Bobbau and the others are making.

That screenshot is buggy: At the times of the Great War, there was only Prometheus, not Prometheus S.

Talk to GE. The Port doesn't include the regular Prometheus, since the Prom and the Prom S are virtually identical.

The Lucifer never had these beams in FS1. It just had a laser with a super long trail and massive damage (Shivan Super Laser)

I know they are the same, but it is more accurate if the laser is called as 'Prometheus' instead of 'Prometheus S'.
If you were a pilot in FS1, you would only know one kind of Prometheus. You would only have the possibility to choose from one type of Prometheus. If you were a pilot 32 years later, you would have the possibility to choose between two types of Prometheus cannons. Making difference between these two are needed only after contact with Earth was gone, and there is no way to collect Argon to continue the production of the Prometheus.

its in the laser section of the table... and fires out of primary weapons, but was described as a dumbfire missile with an extremely long tail...

'in game terms it's more like a dumbfire missile with an invisible warhead and a really long trail. This was the main weapon on the Lucifer, the "boss" ship from FS1'- FS2 beam reference
hence the 'like'
