Seem to be getting more than usual, is telefragged doing something (un)clever?
-
I seem to be getting more also, not sure why though.
-
*p1mps mozilla* (www.mozilla.org) :D
Really hate popups :hopping:
-
telefragged has been my bane for years...
-
ah well, advertising is what keeps the internet* free.
I'm no fan of popups and flogos, especially the more odious ones, but it beats a paid subscription model, IMHO. If they really bug you, let the webmaster/publisher know -- in most cases, they're the ones who authorize them (and receive payment for them).
just my 2c

* - feel free to substitute television, radio, etc. here.

Television isn't free, at least not in the UK... SKY and so on cost a lot of money, and a television lisence is mandatory. Sure it's not much. But it's not free.
-
In the US we pay for cable subscriptions, but if you have a TV, power outlet, and antenna you can get like five public broadcast channels.:D

Or, if you buy a cable wire, you can splice inot your neighbors house... :nervous:
NOW i remember why my uncles in jail :nervous:

Unless they catch you, and charge you a tremendous fine for theft of services, or whatever they call it nowadays...
-
Up to 15 years in prison in Massachusettes... 25 if you own an illegal cable descrambler...

See what you started, Inquisitor? :p
The fee you pay your cable or satellite provider is more like the money you pay for a newspaper or magazine. The $0.50 you pay for your Washington Post doesn't come close to paying the salaries of the journalists, editors, etc. It pretty much pays for the printing and distribution of the paper -- it might not even cover that. Everything else comes from advertising.
The cable companies charge $40/mo or whatever to cover their own costs, plus the fees they pay to the networks they re-transmit. But the fees the cable companies pay the networks don't pay Ted Koppel's salary, nor do they provide the million dollars they give out on Survivor -- once again, it's the advertisers, putting money in the network's pocket, that covers all this.
(The UK broadcast model, if I understand it, is more like public broadcasting in the US. A large part of the funds to run the stations come from the government; this is passed back to the people in the form of the per-set fees. I'm a Yank, so I'm sure I'm missing some of the subtleties here.)

Yeah. Of the 5 Terrestial channels only BBC1 and BBC2 are paid for by the licence fee. The other 3 use adverts to pay for their programming.
In return BBC1 & 2 only have trailers for up coming programs and no adverts (which is brilliant when it comes to watching movies without interruption)
-
I pay a stupidly high cable bill and I never watch BBC 1 or 2. And yet still have to pay my licence fee. Frankly, that sucks eggs and feels like nothing short of extortion on the government's part.
-
The popups didn't work on PHP pages that we were using to format our site for quite some time but it seems that they now work regardless of the PHP formatting that we use anyways.
I've taken to using the Google toolbar to block the popups. Its nice and simple and easy and doesn't seem to cause any problems. Go to Google and look up their toolbar.

I uploaded a one-level demo of A Terror and a Traitor to the Archives in, what, July? I haven't seen it there. Would you mind updating the Archives?

The government funds PBS here in the States but we don't pay fees for a license. I wonder why they bother supporting PBS. No one watches it.

Conclusive proof Americans are idiots. The channel shows Father Ted (or at least it did in January when I was last over there) and no one watches it! :D
-
I used to watch PBS... I liked a few of the shows they imported... Fawlty towers was funny... *smacks Manuel*
-
My little cousin watches Barny or something on it....:nervous:

hehe, you obviously don't have kids, do you?
It has some decent stuff, Nova is usually interesting, and I don't know if they still air Monty Python but my life would be much duller if I hadn't seen it...
BTW most of PBS's funds come from the Corporation for Public Broadcasting (http://www.cpb.org/) (a non-profit corporation), from corporate sponsors, "and viewers like you," as they're fond of reminding you twice a year during the pleas for funds.
-
Do they really do that? I thought it was just the Simpsons taking the piss. Oh dear, that's slightly scary...
-
The Teletubbies won't come after you with laser beams.

W00t, ditto. My block counter's up to 227 already... a lot more than I expected for about a week's usage.

I hardly ever watch TV, so I won't have to worry about TV bills.
Although someone told me that you need a TV licence to use a computer monitor... or does that only apply to CRTs?
-
Hey IceFire, have you updated the Archives lately?

I don't update them or manage them. Thats Remora's area....I don't even want to try and root around in the Archives actually. Its definately not managed like the rest of the site. Its its own separate system on its own separate server actually.
