I noticed that since FS2 assumes swarm weapons have tracking systems, swarm turrets don't aim at the target. That's a bad idea. I made these nice swarm primary turrets for capships that fired 6 blasts in a neat little line. I put them on a Phobos corvette (the one from Inferno) and they missed a Demon destroyer EVERY TIME.

Um... If youposted pics, maybe we'd (I'd) understand better?
-
Just think of the pulse turrets and ion arrays from TBP.
-
*has to go and play TBP*
-
In a word: Make the swarm missiles more accurate!
-
NO NO NO! I want this to be implemented to make swarm PRIMARIES more accurate.
-
Never played TBP. I was only guessing :D
-
Perhaps I can explain it a bit better.
Basically swarm tag works with primary turrets as well. You can fire multiple pulses in a salvo with swarm tag. Unfortunately FS2 assumes that whatever weapon the turret is equipped with, has it's own targeting system. Eg, hornet or tornado missiles. Naturally pulses do not track their targets. This makes swarm tagged primary turrrets really inaccurate.
Several attempts have been made to correct this issue but none of them has gained any popularity. I haven't used fs2_open or tbp_open for a really long time, so I don't know whether this has been fixed already or not.

Swarm works on primaries? Oooh... Ideas, ideas... :drevil:

But not well...not yet.
There needs to be separate swarm coding for primaries however. Since we can assume that primaries are not homing and most secondaries are homing the divisions need to be made that way...
Why?
Because when Eternal One tested swarm code with the targeting instructions intact (like a nromal primary turret does) it also affected missiles as well. Instead of firing out from the port and then tracking, they fired in the direction they were supposed to go in...more like a primary.
It doesn't sound too bad...but it looks aweful. So a little work has to be done.

Isn't it possible to fool with the primary charachteristics to make them homing? I thought I did it once (with very little success, but never on a turret...)

No I think a secondary was fooled into thinking it was a primary.
-
I'll have to fool with this a bit... :)
-
Basically the turrets need to re-aim after firing each shot in a swarm primary volley. If you play TBP R2 and stand next to a Vorchan's gattling turret it'll miss you almost every time. The problem is that the turret doesn't aim properly for the first shot, and doesn't aim at all for subsequent ones. As I understand it, anyway...
-
Speaking of the Vorchan, my inspiration for the swarm turret lasers was a mission in TBP where I watched the Juno get smacked down by a bunch of Vorchans.

I've done a swarm turret once with low-manuverability heatseeking and a large detonation radius. (it still isn't accurate enough to directly hit the hull) This seems to work.

You were going to make me a mad vasudan in a Typhon, IIRC... Nads to you cutting your camp short...:doubt:
