Well, since KT got me screwing around with civvie models, I've taken an hour or two and thrown together a police runabout. Comments and criticism needed. Please read the note under the picture too. :D
(http://home.nc.rr.com/mikhael/PoliceRunabout.jpg)
For you american driver types out there, I figure this thing is the Freespace equivalent of a Ford Crown Victoria or Chevy Impala: Its just a civilian vehicle that's been converted for police use. That's why it doesn't have the standard boxy Terran fighter look: its a more stylish vehicle for sales to the civilian sector. It is not intended for much combat. I figure the police version has a small secondary bank loaded with some subsystem disabling missiles, and has rather light primaries built in the pods on either side of the cockpit. Alternatively, the primaries could be in the bit above the cockpit and it could have two slightly larger secondaries in the pods.
[edit]
oh yeah: this thing is tiny. those flashers are probably about half a metre square.
[/edit]
So, what do you lot think? Should I finish it out and get started on a civilian ship pack or Freespace: COPS?
:D
-
Intresting. I'd like to see it textured.
-
Dude, if you make the models, I'll do the fredding :drevil:
Either way, keep the models flowing, this is civilian-involving campaign gold ;7
btw, Raa'h said he might take a look at finishing up the last model, so we'll see how that goes. :)
-
I like it, looks pretty cool. Though I think the texturing could be better (untextured??)
I like the fact that some people are doing Civilian vessels. Campaigns like Derelict give the mercs and pirates GTVA vessels like Hercs and so forth. But unlike Star Wars, the "good guy" starfighters don't pass easily for bad guy I think.
-
Reminds me of Freelancer, except the only police were the military in that. I think this is good. :)
-
Keep it up Mik :D This thing looks pretty sweet and civillian - better yet, its simple design will lned itself to relatively easy texturing.
-
excellent design
I'd test a bigger engine section, something really oversized -and partially rounded- on the ventral side, to give the impression of a very small and fast ship, the result will be an unbalanced ship that could be very ugly or very nice:).
It also look strange to me the single dorsal spike, I'd add probably a couple more dorsal/ventral spikes/fins or I'd remove it completeley

I had considered ventral engine but didn't like how it came out. By then I was pretty burnt out from pounding through the thing relentlessly. I'll give the spare engine a shot. At the very least, the engines themselves probably need to be stretched a little bit.
The spike is actually supposed to be an antenna. I may go back and change it to a blade/fin shaped antenna like you find on modern aircraft.

Speaking of Fredding... I've got a proposal for you. I'll PM you and Narol about it. ;)
I'm going to be working on several civilian vessels, both general population and corporate. Some of those will be 158th exclusive, but I'll talk to making the more general stuff (things like this runabout) public. We all need civilian ships. :)
As for Raa'h doing the texturing, I look forward to it. :)
Next up, after this is done and I get a few things finished for the 158th, will be a police interdictor (kind of a police heavy fighter. think SWAT) and a police boarding/breaching ship (gotta get on board those hostile smuggler freighters somehow).
-
Oh, I forgot! Props to Narol. The cockpit for this thing comes mostly from one of his ship designs. If I hadn't used it, this would have had another Herc knockoff cockpit. :D
-
Cool! :)
Now make a hotrod/muscle car er.. ship version. :drevil: :D
-
nice, I'd just make all the engine exhausts the same size.

I will, just as soon as I extend the overall engine pods. :D

So here's the final version of the (now named) Shirow-class Police Runabout. Its got LODs, Shields, Thrusters and Debris. If there's enough interest, I'll upload a zip file, like I did with the Asher-class Tug.

Upload and I'll bug Raa or Anaz again. :)

No, but it is an homage to you indirectly. You're the one that made me start thinking of Appleseed. The heavy fighter version (think SWAT) will be called the Masamune for the same reason.
Now, if you WANT to do the mapping, far be it from me to stop you. Heck, I'll even layout the LODS and subobjects seperately so they don't overlap, if you want. ;)
-
I'll see when I'm done with the asher ;)

Did you want me to go ahead and upload this, V?

yeah, sure, I'll do it when I have time/go over my lazyness :)

Excellent. I'll leave the debris and thrusters out this time. ;) I'll post the URL when I get a chance to upload it.
-
sooo.... you gonna upload this?
-
Eventually. I was looking at it yesterday.

This thing needs a docking port... How would the cop aprehend the bad guy?
-
In this case, its just a runabout. Its not for apprehending anyone. Its for basic enforcement duties. I suppose I'll need to do something like a support ship as a 'paddy wagon'. :D

Oh, and err... I don't remember volunteering for texturing... but I guess it couldn't hurt too much...
-
You don't have to if you don't want to, man. But feel free, once I've uploaded the file.
-
Runabout.zip (http://home.nc.rr.com/mikhael/runabout.zip)
There are two files in the zip. The .LWO is the runabout with all lods, thrusters, shields and debris on seperate layers, and in their appropriate places. The .3DS file has the same objects all on the same layer, fully tripled and spread out, so you'll have to do whatever you do to put them back together.

I've always assumed that in the GTVA, space travel was highly regulated by the navy save for backwater systems such as Laramis, and even there they would be using modified relics from the V-T and Great War. (Elysiums or Argos being used to transport civilians, modified Chronos freighters to mine, etc.)
-
I presume pretty much exactly the opposite, Ace. Mainly because I hate the idea of a completely miltarized space presence. There's basically no reason for civilians to limit themselves to retrofitted military designs. We don't do that for civilian shipping on earth, and we're unlikely to do it for civilian shipping in space.
Besides, it would be so BORING that way.
-
*butts in*
I think it's somewhere in the middle, mostly depending on location. Your fringe systems, like Laramis, Ross 128, the NTF core worlds (Polaris, Regulus, Sirius), et cetera, are all going to rely on relatively older tech, at least for the civvies. Those places all got pretty much trashed by the shivans/postwar depression/civil war/insert-your-own-reason-here. That applies to the military too, I'd assume, since the NTF was after all using the older tech. (Although that may have just been simply because Bosch was running out of ships to throw at the GTVA.. who knows.)
On the other hand, your central systems are going to have a lot more to trade and a lot more money flowing (esp. if the Shivans haven't run roughshod over them in the past 30 years or so) so you're going to see much more commercial activity and such. Less need to crack down on pirates, too, simply because the military presence is too strong.
Oh yeah, and Mikhael? Your quote is yeah, apocryphal, and the original is by Hermann Goering. He said it to his lawyer, I think, before he commited suicide in Nuremberg. If my memory serves. You should be able to find the correct, full quote if you do a Google. I'm too lazy.
