Title: I must be missing something (Athlon fan)
Post by: aldo_14 on September 10, 2003, 01:27:14 pm
Um, can someone clarify for me whethjer Athlons normally come with a fan /. heatsink?  Dabs.com seems strangely vague on the subject insofar as I can tell, although it does state that P4's come with 'em included........and on the side, does anyone think a heatsink for an XP1500+ would work on a faster chip (I'm thinking XP2400+... i think the cache and architecture are pretty much the same?

I've quite often seen Athlons without fans and sinks. They probably think such a system offer the consumer better choice and value for money. You'll be looking at, say, at least 20 squids for a fan and sink for that chip. I paid 35 for a huge copper thingy and a 120mm fan, and now my chip is overclocked from 1.53 to 2.0

You'd think they'd say something, wouldn't you..........

Well, usually they 'recommend the use of a fan and heatsink to avoid damage to the chip...'

You're probably best off buying one anyway. The ones that come with the chips aren't brilliant. Yeah, they'll do the job, but a 3rd party one will be better, 'specially if you're going to do any overclocking. :)

I think the "Box" models got a sink+fan included.

I've got an uber-fan on my processor.  The heatsink is about an inch and a half deep and about an inch wider than the processor itself.  And the fan makes a sound like a Harrier jumpjet on vertical takeoff.

Strangely, the CPU doesn't like being overclocked.

I've got an Athlon XP 1700+, running at an FSB speed of 133 MHz.  When I increase that speed by even the tiniest margin, games such as Unreal and Deus Ex lock up mere seconds after being run.  Any ideas why?  Temperature of the CPU doesn't exceed 50 degrees C, even in games like Unreal 2.

try keeping it below 0 degrees C.

Not a good idea to run without some kind of cooling present.

The box sets of Athlon XP's do definately come with a heatsink.  The one I bought a couple of months did anyways and I think thats normally how they ship them.

Its actually a bit decieving but many people believe that the stock sink and cooler are not very good...but the ones that come with the Athlon XP's are actually excellent.  Some tests showed the stock AMD cooler on the 2700+'s (and up) to be equally as good as some of the more expensive options.  There were obviously coolers out there that were better...but some of the more expensive options didn't even do as well the stock cooler.  So its not bad.

Retail will get you a heatsink and processor, OEM will get you the chip in a little plastic box.

I jsut bought a 2600+ the other month and it came with a heatsink. see there is a heatsink and a fan on top. I think most of the 2thousand ones and aove come with the sinks and fan.

That's an amazingly wire-free case! Mine always looks like I've spilt spaghetti over the motherboard :D

I'd love to see them do those tests down here during the summer, that would be the true test of how well they perform. When I bought my 2400+ I left the stock cooler in the plastic case and put the Volcano 9 I bought to replace it (which I'm not entirely convinced will do the job either but that remains to be seen. I'm checking my options regardless though) on straight away instead.

I finally found what I needed, albeit buried in a fairly obscure part oif the AMD website.  They sell 'processors in a box' (to quote) which incloude the appropriate fan (etc).  Bearing in mind the fact that AMD make the chips (and thus test their heat tolerance, etc), i'm perfectly happy to trust 'em.

2400+!!!! NO! DO NOT GET IT! Spend the extra few dollars and get a 2500+. Markedly faster, overclocks better.

I can garentee that an Athlon will burn itself up.
