First:
Flare style countermeasures.
Make it so you can set up a laserglow instead of a pof.
Second:
Bullet casings.
Using a flag to enable specify the direction you want the POF you pick to eject at a set speed. For example
velocity=10
x=0, y=-90, z=0

For the casings, having an amount option, random dispersion, and laser glow instead of .pof would be a good idea when it comes to this suggestion.
It would allow for weapons to have a type of muzzle flash. The best example would be the particles that fly off of the plasma bomb mounts when the bombs are fired in Homeworld 2.

As far as muzzflashes are concerned you could set it like this.
