Call him drunken Ira Hayes
He won't answer anymore
Not the whiskey drinkin' Indian
Nor the Marine that went to war
Gather round me people there's a story I would tell
About a brave young Indian you should remember well
From the land of the Pima Indian
A proud and noble band
Who farmed the Phoenix valley in Arizona land
Down the ditches for a thousand years
The water grew Ira's peoples' crops
'Till the white man stole the water rights
And the sparklin' water stopped
Now Ira's folks were hungry
And their land grew crops of weeds
When war came, Ira volunteered
And forgot the white man's greed
CHORUS:
Call him drunken Ira Hayes
He won't answer anymore
Not the whiskey drinkin' Indian
Nor the Marine that went to war
There they battled up Iwo Jima's hill,
Two hundred and fifty men
But only twenty-seven lived to walk back down again
And when the fight was over
And when Old Glory raised
Among the men who held it high
Was the Indian, Ira Hayes
CHORUS:
Call him drunken Ira Hayes
He won't answer anymore
Not the whiskey drinkin' Indian
Nor the Marine that went to war
Ira returned a hero
Celebrated through the land
He was wined and speeched and honored; Everybody shook his hand
But he was just a Pima Indian
No water, no crops, no chance
At home nobody cared what Ira'd done
And when did the Indians dance
CHORUS:
Call him drunken Ira Hayes
He won't answer anymore
Not the whiskey drinkin' Indian
Nor the Marine that went to war
Then Ira started drinkin' hard;
Jail was often his home
They'd let him raise the flag and lower it
like you'd throw a dog a bone!
He died drunk one mornin'
Alone in the land he fought to save
Two inches of water in a lonely ditch
Was a grave for Ira Hayes
CHORUS:
Call him drunken Ira Hayes
He won't answer anymore
Not the whiskey drinkin' Indian
Nor the Marine that went to war
Yeah, call him drunken Ira Hayes
But his land is just as dry
And his ghost is lyin' thirsty
In the ditch where Ira died

Johnny Cash - Hurt
I hurt myself today
To see if I still feel
I focus on the pain
The only thing that's real
The needle tears a hole
The old familiar sting
Try to kill it all away
But I remember everything
What have I become?
My sweetest friend
Everyone I know
Goes away in the end
You could have it all
My empire of dirt
I will let you down
I will make you hurt
I wear this crown of thorns
Upon my liar's chair
Full of broken thoughts
I cannot repair
Beneath the stain of time
The feeling disappears
You are someone else
I am still right here
What have I become?
My sweetest friend
Everyone I know
Goes away in the end
You could have it all
My empire of dirt
I will let you down
I will make you hurt
If I could start again
A million miles away
I would keep myself
I would find a way

'Til things are brighter,
I'm the Man In Black

Sorry to post all this but just incase anywants to sing and sing the right words.
Johnny Cash - Ring Of Fire
Love Is A Burning Thing
And It Makes A Fiery Ring
Bound By Wild Desire
I Fell Into A Ring Of Fire
CHORUS:
I Fell Into A Burning Ring Of Fire
I Went Down, Down, Down
And The Flames Went Higher
And It Burns, Burns, Burns
The Ring Of Fire
The Ring Of Fire
I Fell Into A Burning Ring Of Fire
I Went Down, Down, Down
And The Flames Went Higher
And It Burns, Burns, Burns
The Ring Of Fire
The Ring Of Fire
The Taste Of Love Is Sweet
When Hearts Like Ours Meet
I Fell For You Like A Child
Oh, But The Fire Went Wild
CHORUS
I Fell Into A Burning Ring Of Fire
I Went Down, Down, Down
And The Flames Went Higher
And It Burns, Burns, Burns
The Ring Of Fire
The Ring Of Fire
I Fell Into A Burning Ring Of Fire
I Went Down, Down, Down
And The Flames Went Higher
And It Burns, Burns, Burns
The Ring Of Fire
The Ring Of Fire
And It Burns, Burns, Burns
The Ring Of Fire
The Ring Of Fire

His wife saved his life in a way. He really turned it around from all the drugs and alchohol. It is true behind every great Man there is a great woman. Wonder where that woman is of mine
The Man will be truly missed.
-
The next time I get any money, it is going straight to a Cash CD.
Truly great man.

The trick is to play 'Rusty Cage' with maximum woofage. Mmm, bass.

Yah, I know it is a cover of a NIN song. The words with the video are incredible. I usually hate videos but that was an exception. Besides do you know how many bands did covers of his songs?

This thread deserves to be bumped.
Farewell, Mr. Cash

Ok? Who's Johnny Cash? Never heard of him. Well, I take that back, I've heard his name once, but I can't recall ever hearing any music by him. What kind of music did he play?
Eh, he's dead. More will die. It's part of life.

Either version is a great song. NIN took down their website for today as a memorial.

He was quite possibly the greatest country music star of all time. He had hits in every decade of his career and many rock and rap stars cite him as an inspiration. Have a little respect, for the dead if nothing else.
-
I never knew the guy, so I'm not gonna lose any sleep over his death. It was bound to happen, anyway. Everyone dies. He left behind, apparently, quite a few popular songs to those who enjoy that particular style of music.
I suppose that should speak more than anything I'd ever say.
-
Well put it this way - I'd never have admitted to liking country music until Petrarch pointed me at Johnny Cash
-
Damn. I should be on a commission.
-
Ah, found it - here's a Cash quote to beat 'em all:
Country music used to represent horses, railroads, land, judgment day, family, hard times, whisky, courtship, marriage, adultery, separatism, murder, war, prison, rambling, damnation, home, salvation, death, pride, humor, piety, rebellion, patriotism, larceny, determination, tragedy, rowdiness, heartbreak, love, mother and God.

Used to...?

Garth Brooks and Shania Twain don't count, which is what the quote was trying to put across...
