Title: Bad speech sim news for win9x and new voices
Post by: RandomTiger on September 15, 2003, 12:44:25 pm
I have made the decision to not (at this time) attempt to solve the win9x / extra voices problem:

Win9x problem: Speech simulation doesnt work
Extra voices problem: 2000 and XP only have one voice

I believe, to solve this it would requre me to create another installer, I already have my hands full with the current one.

However its not all bad news. There is still the option to download the speech SDK which should allow 98/ME users to hear simulated speech and for everyone else to get two new (slightly higher quality voices).

http://download.microsoft.com/download/speechSDK/SDK/5.1/WXP/EN-US/speechsdk51.exe

This is why Im not doing it at this time. Its too much work for too few people when there is already a solution. There are other more important issues I have to work on.

Anyone who wants to pick up this sub-project or prove me wrong and show me its actually really easy to sort this out, please step up.

Only have one voice?

I have the option of 3, Microsoft Mike, Microsoft Sam, and Microsoft Mary. There's another, but it sounds bad.

But this is probably what you mean, I can't use anything other than Mary in-game...

We need a Microsoft Headz. A Vasudan would be the only kind of voice that would really sound good because simulated speech does not really replicate human speech and Vasudans' translators simulate human speech, but not exactly duplicate it.

in a previous topic you provide a link to an FS2_open_r.exe that led to a 404, is this needed for it to work because i got the speech SDK and it still didnt work

Raa Tor'h: Try looking in control panel, freespace will use the default voice so if you can set it in there you have control. Im half way through implementing code to allow to to select the voice from the launcher.

Woolie Wool:

Personally I think any voice is better than none. If you dont like it dont use it. The technology is advancing all the time, if you are willing to fork out cash you can get some quality human sounding stuff.

I know about the CP... and I changed them there... but I don't think FS recognized the setting at the time...

Running Win98 here, installed the speech SDK, the launcher shows speech as installed and i get the test thingy fine, but in game i don't hear any speech in the game. I checked all those nice little boxes, but it simply won't work. :wtf:
