I built this from scratch. And it doesn't suck. Watch out, Venom ;7

cool, are you thinking of this as a long-range missile?
-
Yup. Hence 'stand off missile'. 'Tis a weapon, BTW, and not an actual ship so it's only low poly...

so capships shoot these things from a couple of hundred clicks, then jumps, and let's these things go in alone?
or are they bomber weapons?
i like the model a lot, but the front "wings" look a bit wierd.

See what I mean when I said you were just a few months behind me when it came to modding :D
Nice work DG. How big is the thruster plume going to be on this thing cause I think you should make it fairly long :)
-
Ta kara :D
This thing is basically a rip-off of the RAF's Storm Shadow... do a Google image search if you want to see the modern version. It'll be launched in-game from fighters and bombers, and I'm currently experimenting with a range of factors to encourage the player to actually fire the thing from a huge distance (i.e not like FS bombs which you need to fire at point-blank range to avoid them geting shot down) whilst at the same time not making it an all-powerful uber-weapon. In any case it's deployment will be very limited and would basically prevent you from carrying much of anything else...
The thruster is... er... about three meters on a five and a half meter long missile
Kas, weird how? Bear in mind they're supposed to be folded back when on the rail, swinging open once the weapon is released. Which is what that black bit at the root is supposed to be about... I might make the wings higer poly if you think it'd be worth it...
-
wings in space are always a bit wierd, but you could say these were radar antenna or something.
i wonder, is it possible to have warhead excelerate when it is in a certain range of it's target? you could have the thing go really fast for the last few hundred meters, while the rest of the path is travelled at 100M/s
-
Ah, yes, wings in space. But 'tis also an atmospheric weapon, see. My Hammerhead has wings does it not?

aha, SAAB, now it explains. in that case, make them a bit thicker.

Right-o, I'll have a tinker tomorrow before I set about the LODs. In the mean time, I'm going to bed. Night all.

a bit fat, no?

Will anyone aknowledge the fact that this is the space version of Tomahawk? As such, it is perfect!!

Something I've always wanted to try is to make a missile (torpedo, really) with an extremely high top speed, but a very low acceleration. For example, something that would only get to 200m/s after 4km. Let's see, that would make it an acelleration of a half-meter per second per second.
So basically, you have huge torpedo you launch, travelling slow as a tortise in the beginning. It's easy as pie to shoot down at this stage, so you fire it at the target from upwards of 5km away. By the time any defenders can get in rage, it's already moving at 150m/s - and even if they blow it up, it would atomize them, seeing as it's such a big warhead and needs to be uber-powerful to be worth it.
Fire from 10km away, and by the time it strikes, it's moving at 500m/s. ;) Impossible to intercept. :D

I'd love to see smart targetting missiles, that would choose a new target when the current one is destroyed ;) It seems such a waste to watch 8 hornet go piling into a piece of debris :(
I like the missile, and yes, a detachable 'torpedo' would be a great new addition to the Terran arsenal :D
Flipside :)

Looks like the space bus from SpaceBalls :D :D
Sorry hehe. It looks good for a missle. Maybe shorten the wings a bit.
-
If you're meaning the Eagle 5 (Lone Starr's ship) then how can it look anything like it?? Eagle 5 is a Winnebago with wings, DG's model is a missile.

Looks like a Storm Shadow cruise missile :)
If anyone is interested, have a look around at the Eurofighter Typhoon. This is one of the multitudes of weapons planned for its use. Apparently this gives a small fighter the ability to launch two relatively powerful standoff attack missiles without ever coming close to the targets defenses. To boot, if this is the missile I'm thinking it is, it also has terrain following and features some stealth abilities too...so its a really neat weapon :)

It gets the something or other of approval.

blah, the storm shadow is a direct copy of the Apache from Matra ( a missile, not the gunship :p ). you can't even tell the difference by just looking at it :p

If a standoff missile is being considered by anyone for a regular FS campaign (that is, in the FS universe), the issue of it being shot down close to a target ship would be a problem. One could get around this by designing such a weapon with a stealth flag in mind so that it can't be targetted as easily. All you realy need to do is make a mini stealth craft with no cockpit or weaponry (... well, maybe mini-turrets), and use the ships editor in FRED to give it a kamakazi AI and special explosion effects, then have them launched from a docking bay. Another launch method would use the more universal docking abilities of SCP to have it docked to a bomber that has a belly dockpoint. When it undocks (ordered by scripting) give it the ai kamakazi sexp from SCP. This could pose a problem if you want to have the player's bomber able to launch one, but you might be able to use training commands so that when the player hits the key (or key sequence, or button from a stick) that calls for a support ship, the missile is scripted to undock, then the rest goes on as above. I'm not sure if that made any sense, but there it is.
Later!

Well... 'tis not exactly a cruise missile. 'Stand-off' is far more accurate. Kudos on the Typhoon knowledge

'Tis indeed, I was wondering who'd be the first to mention that... the French original was a runway-buster, the RAF version is intended to take on a variety of targets like bunkers and whatnot
Ta muchly for the comments all
