Title: Is this concept worth working on?
Post by: WraithHost on February 08, 2002, 04:31:00 pm

It's a combat troop transport and landing craft.
Inspired by the Eagles in 'space 1999'.

I though about doing this kind of ship - its similar but diffrent enough to be err.. difrent  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/biggrin.gif) I think you should do it! but give it more detail.... (and more TURRETS!)

This will probably end up as a LOD1.

'more turrets' ?
It already has 4 twin turrets & it's about the size of an Ursa.

What he says  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif) ( I've read about Lod1 stuff, don't worry).
Oh, don't make the engines pod hollow, this kind of stuff has to be made with maps ( have you ever seen an engine like that anyway?  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/wink.gif) )
For a transport, it should have only one or two turrets, not more. It's not a gunship  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif)

The hollow engines were just an experiment.

The turrets are probably light weapons like the Avenger. It needs a large coverage of fire as it is a landing craft and needs to defend it's self from many small targets.
But as these targets are smaller than Fighter craft the turrets would be low damage/rapid fire type.

Actually, I think it would be a lot less cool without the hollow engines...

I agree.....
But, like everyone else said, it's too blocky.
It has a good number of turrets, but it should bigger than the Ursa, probably should be the size of that....hmmmm...forget the name of that smaller Terran transport (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/frown.gif) (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/wink.gif)

Even blocky might be OK, if you kinda... go BEYOND blocky, make it a really angular ship. That, and some good texes, could be really cool!

Argo? (spelling?)
Hollow engines are cool - just make it small enough to fit flames and there you go... proably...

GTT Elysium. ("http://freespace.volitionwatch.com/techfs/fsships/elysium.shtml") You see them a lot in FS1- helpless little things.

suggestions:

1) make it bigger (so it can carry more than one platoon of marines.)
2) leave the turrets as is, this is a transport, not a true combat craft.  Look at other transports.
3) make the turrets flak turrets
4) make it blocky, very few troop transports are sleek, not even planetary assault shuttles.
5) think back to those hovercrafts, the rings with rotor blades contained within, put 4 of those on there, one at each corner (planetary assault)

Thats all i have, just a few suggestions, your idea has merit, it'll go a long way.
